Christmas Eve Disasters

We are currently at my in-laws: me, DH, and two DDs - 9yo and 5yo. At around 5 this afternoon, just as I was smugly
congratulating myself on avoiding any illnesses or major catastrophes, my 5yo (lightly) bashes her face on the wooden arm of my FILs chair and knocks one front tooth out and another is now loose.

Blood everywhere. DH goes ashen and has to be consoled as he hates the sight of blood. 5yo is screaming her head off, I have blood all over my favourite hoodie. 9yo disappears in tears upstairs. I’m frantically trying to remember if this is a baby tooth or a permanent one! I’m 95% sure it’s a milk tooth but regardless we are booking a trip to the dentist in the New Year! I think I read something about baby teeth being smooth along the bottom (which this is) while grown teeth are jagged?

Anyway, 5yo is now the owner of an adorable lisp and I’ve started in on the Baileys.

Anyone else have any disasters?

I spilled lovely sugary ginger wine all over my hob, counter and floor. And then cried on the floor in a sticky mess.

all cleared up now, but still

ginger wine
Yule juice

Well, we brought the caravan back and put it on our driveway yesterday for me and dh to sleep in to accommodate my family. Only the window seal has broken and let in water and now we have damp in the van and are looking at a £500 repair bill.

That was bad enough. But then I went to run dd a bath at 7pm and the water was cold. And the heating had packed in. Emergency plumber came out and we're another £600 down. I've had the worst year and now feel truly victimised.

Pamperpartypooper · 25/12/2023 00:15

I spent 5 hours this afternoon with my youngest in the urgent care centre waiting to see a doctor for about 3 minutes to give us antibiotics for a throat and ear infection. Finally got home about 9pm, got the first dose in them and off to bed, only to have a different child complaining of the same symptoms and running a temp of over 39. Dosed up with calpol and ibuprofen and praying we don’t need to spend another 5 hours back at urgent care tomorrow! If we do, it’s definitely DH’s turn! FML! 😩

5foot5 · 25/12/2023 00:15

At that age they will be baby teeth.

I knocked my front teeth loose at that age. I was playing at being a lion tamer and swung a chair up in to the air, except my 5yo arms were not strong enough to hold it there so it fell back and it e in the face. Cue much crying and spitting blood in to the sink. I guess they would have fallen out naturally in a few months anyway to make room for the new ones.

Just as we were about to take our family photo in front of the tree, our two year old spewed all over himself and DH.
We got him cleaned up and took him to bed...my bed that I had just a few mins before changed into nice fresh linen. He laid down, coughed, sat up and vommed everywhere. He's already woken up once so I think I'm in for a long night.

Shame about the tooth, I'm certain it will be a milk tooth as adult teeth come in around 7/8 don't they?
Sounds horrendous.

Merry Christmas to us 🤣

Rookie error.

Never ever put them back into bed until after the Second Spew. There's always a Second Spew. It's toddler law. THEN it's ok to to go for clean pjs/clean bed. Grin

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 25/12/2023 00:17

My DS did this at after School Club when he was in reception. He was cool as he was first to lose a teeth in class. I also remember my DD's first tooth came out on her 5th birthday as she was at her birthday party eating pizza. It's almost certainly a baby tooth. They do bleed a bit.

MrsWidgerysLodger · 25/12/2023 00:18

Not this year but I sent myself flying down our (very steep) stairs and broke my ankle on Xmas eve. The irony being that my present from DH was some gorgeous (but very high heeled) shoe I'd been lusting after. Don't think I wore them until about Easter!

shellyleppard · 25/12/2023 00:20

A few years ago my son brought home a vomiting bug just before Christmas break. (21st December) It took till the 28 th December before I could even think about cooking the Christmas dinner 🤢🤢 it was that bad they had to deep clean the school. All because some silly bugger sent her child in to school "because he was only sick" Once 😳😳 .......

Hankunamatata · 25/12/2023 00:23

If she has any adult teeth in you can compare to one came out. It really will be much whiter

Ds1's first Christmas, I spent the whole of Christmas Eve vomiting, then dp the whole of Christmas Day. Feeling better on Boxing Day, we visited relatives and passed the sickness bug onto them. They were all really ill.

Why on earth did you go? You must know the 48 hour rule doesn't just apply to kids in school - it's common sense for anyone who has had D&V of any kind to keep away from others until 48/72 hours after the last episode. Confused

suicune · 25/12/2023 00:29

Years ago as a child my entire family came down with gastric flu over Christmas. Everyone bound to their bed/a sofa with a bucket beside them. Christmas dinner entirely untouched. Everyone barely moved and just watched shite tv all day long in dark rooms. My sibling and I were too ill to play with toys, mum was too ill to cook anything beyond frozen chicken dippers and chips. Dad was ill but had to work (self employed) but kept coming home every few hours to lie in a heap.

I’ve never had anything like it again and I pray I never will.

Lovethistimeofyear · 25/12/2023 00:42

Quite a few years ago when DD1 was a baby she caught a horrendous sickness bug - it lasted for over 9 days. We were back and forward to the GP, I was so worried. She was finally on the mend
when we went to my in laws for
xmas.

Despite it being around 11 days since she first started to be sick, I started to be sick on Xmas night and EVERYONE else got sick too. It was awful.

Tacotortoise · 25/12/2023 00:49

Not this year but in 2010 our pipes burst on Christmas Eve and flooded the kitchen just as our guests were arriving. Every Christmas I still send mental good wishes to the emergency plumber who came out that evening and stopped the water flowing.

That was really selfish of you all. Like, really
selfish .

Can’t find where I’ve hidden half the DCs Christmas presents.

Namefortodayandtomorrow · 25/12/2023 01:09

1am and we are at the emergency vet with our dog who ate the mince pie our son left out for Santa. They’ve induced vomiting and after paying several hundred pounds we are hoping to take him home tonight 🤞. And next year Santa can go without!

SapphireSeptember · 25/12/2023 01:12

Yup. Had to call the fire brigade as there was smoke in the washing machine when I opened it to get my washing out and it set off the fire alarm. There's two communal washing machines in a house that's been divided into small flats. I didn't know what else to do as no one else was here, and was worried in case it was on fire, so I phoned 999. Now both washing machines are off limits, I had two loads in, one lot of washing stinks of burnt plastic, and the other I had to drag out halfway through a wash, so now it's dripping all over the floor. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I had to phone the emergency contact for the lettings agency and woke up the poor guy who answered the phone. He did say 'well done', so I felt a bit better. I suppose it could have been worse. 🤷🏻‍♀️

LadyJingly · 25/12/2023 01:12

I was at the only available dentist (as advised by NHS 111) almost an hour’s drive from home, having an emergency molar extraction at 10pm tonight. Broken, unsalvageable tooth unfortunately. Tried to keep going, hoping I could manage the pain for a couple of days, but there was just no way.

I am petrified of dentists as a result of 1970’s medieval-like dental practices and shook so hard the chair rattled! Thankfully the dentist was very calm and reassuring and it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting.

When we got home, I had to direct DH getting all the dc’s presents and stockings from their hiding places and all set up for morning, while I tried to recover from the shock.

The only thing that scares me more than dentists is ‘dry socket’ so now I am fretting about that and thinking about all the lovely Christmas food I won’t be eating this year. Sad Still, I am so glad the pain has finally gone and extremely grateful to the dentist and all their staff for working tonight. (Had to pay though as they had had so many 111 referrals there were no NHS appointments left.)

Can’t find where I’ve hidden half the DCs Christmas presents.

Finally remembered my sneaky hiding spot though DH was not amused having waited till 1 am to play Santa. Worse still when we filled the stockings, one of them had a note on it: “Dear Santa please go to the kitchn. The dog’s stocking is in the kitchn.” Sure enough, it’s 1:30 am and we have found an empty stocking with the dog’s name pinned to it. How to fill it ?!🤷🤷🏻‍♀️

SillySausage21 · 25/12/2023 01:51

Awake with my dinky newborn who is a very unsettled babe tonight, thankfully my 19 month old has slept through all the cries this evening, hopefully I can get atleast 1 hours sleep before a busy day tomorrow 😂 there's something really lovely about being in the thick of it at this time of year knowing that it is just a phase and that this is our final baby and something we'll never experience again & next Christmas this will be a distant memory, I'm not sure we'll be laughing about it though DH is very grumpy atm 😂

coxesorangepippin · 25/12/2023 01:54

^

Brilliant! But sorry you were injured

When DD was 2 and DS was 5 we obviously had to host the entire (15 members) family for Christmas. Including cooking, usual shenanigans, etc etc.

DD was sick all down my back after eating too much chocolate, then Fil was amazed that I went to take a shower afterwards.

Fun times

Clobberella · 25/12/2023 01:58

A good thread for me to join tonight. First of all I’m so sorry for your DD’s pain and wish her a speedy recovery soon.

I’m currently sat up in bed with DC3 (11 weeks old) who has a snotty, blocked nose so can’t breathe properly when lying flat. Looks like they are sleeping on my chest for the night - and will have to deal with the rest of Christmas Day as it comes!!

Hope everyone who's awake gets some more sleep. I've got up as can't sleep. DS1 present was leaked to him by our friend's daughter. He's a teen but it was a big surprise so I'm annoyed about that
