When do you put the presents under the tree?

We’ve always put them under there on Christmas Eve night, so when DS wakes up in the morning he can say “he’s been!” And see all the gifts ready to open.
My parents did the same with us.

But a few friends put them under on 22nd/23rd and even before.

Just curious what others do really.

Christmas Eve night but that’s only for burglary reasons as the country I am originally from has high rates of burglaries close to Christmas, where gifts on show around a tree are the first target. Gifts remain in the loft hidden until then.

Sorry I don’t have a more festive reason!

Jessforless · 24/12/2023 13:58

We put a few under that family and friends give us, and the DC’s presents to each other. Probably about 15 or 20 total gifts… looks nice and they get excited putting them under.

then after they go to sleep on Christmas Eve we add all their stuff from us and to each other, and they get excited that ‘he’s been’ Christmas morning. Think it’s the best of both worlds :)

Radiat · 24/12/2023 13:58

When my children were younger, I’d only put them out on Christmas Eve. Now they’re a bit older I put out bits and pieces as and when they’re wrapped.

Floralnomad · 24/12/2023 14:01

We used to put them under the tree on Christmas Eve but since we’ve had our dog we just get them down on Christmas morning as he likes unwrapping .

Shf · 24/12/2023 14:04

An annual argument in our house. My family put everything under the tree Xmas Eve (and then the stockings appear overnight); DH’s family put them under the tree as and when they are wrapped during the week up to Christmas. We are both adamant our way is right.

We've compromised and put them out the evening if the 22nd here, bar stockings.

TheGoogleMum · 24/12/2023 14:05

We used to put presents for other people under the tree til we saw them. Kids presents always Xmas eve night (my kids are still young). This year we haven't out any under the tree yet. I think curious baby and excited 5 yr old it's best they just don't see the presents till it's time to open!

sprigatito · 24/12/2023 14:08

There are some under there already, things that have arrived from outside the family, but the bulk will come down tonight after we've sent the "kids" (19 and 21) to bed around midnight. We still do mince pie and sherry for Santa too!

GrumpyPanda · 24/12/2023 14:08

Christmas eve after dusk, right before opening them. Everybody gets shooed out of the living room, presents are arranged, live candles on the tree are lit and all electric lights switched off. Then doors are re-opened for carols and bubbly. We'll usually switch on an additional light or two for the actual opening of presents.

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 24/12/2023 14:09

Tonight after the kids are asleep

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 24/12/2023 14:09

Now at the last minute before we go to bed or the dog would have a great time unwrapping everything! Before we’d put some under the tree and some out on Christmas Eve from Santa.

We used to put them under the tree on Christmas Eve but since we’ve had our dog we just get them down on Christmas morning as he likes unwrapping .

Likewise, if we left our under the tree before we were ready to open them, the dogs would have done it for us.

MillarMountVandal · 24/12/2023 14:12

Husband and mine are always under the tree, and my daughter's gifts from family etc all go under the tree. Daughter's gifts from us though are all arranged on one of the couches after she goes to bed.

Jessforless · 24/12/2023 14:12

Our new dog sleeps in a crate but our previous dog once ate a 1kg bar of dairy milk someone had wrapped and put in a gift bag for the kids - he ate the wrapping, the box and the chocolate.

that was an expensive mistake!

DappledThings · 24/12/2023 14:12

Whenever they are wrapped and ready. They started appearing about 2 weeks ago I think in dribs and drabs. Some family arrived yesterday so there were more then. Some were there but have now been packed up and brought over to other family today.

Purplestorm83 · 24/12/2023 14:13

I put mine out as soon as they are wrapped, so usually early December!

Funkyslippers · 24/12/2023 14:15

As soon as they're wrapped but stockings put out in Christmas day. My dds are older but still like stockings (who wouldn't?)

dooneyousmugelf · 24/12/2023 14:15

Santa delivers them late on Christmas Eve ready for the wow factor in the morning.
I've never left presents under the tree so as not to advertise to burglars, anyway.

RampantIvy · 24/12/2023 14:15

Christmas morning, for the same unfestive reason of reducing burglary risk.

Ifancythegrinch · 24/12/2023 14:15

About midnight on xmas eve when I am sure everyone is asleep.

Anything under the tree before that wouldn’t last long with the 3 year old especially.

There is only me, dh and the children now anyway, no presents from anyone else. If inlaws come they hide them in the car until nighttime.

IncompleteSenten · 24/12/2023 14:16

When mine were young they went under the tree after they'd fallen asleep Christmas eve.

When they hit their teens we started putting them under the tree from the beginning of December when the tree goes up.

Watsername · 24/12/2023 14:27

They don’t go under the tree…. Stockings are delivered overnight on Christmas Eve/early Christmas morning (depending on when I go to bed) to the end of the bed. Big presents are brought out of hiding to open after Christmas lunch.

I was taught never to leave presents out for any significant time due to the burglary risk.

WolfFoxHare · 24/12/2023 14:31

We do it Christmas Eve after DS has gone to bed - that’s how DH’s family and mine did it too. Even when I was a teenager, they went under on Christmas Eve (though by that age I was helping out them under there and putting my own under for my family! DS is on the cusp of not believing now and so next year I’m hoping we can do it in the afternoon/early evening instead of waiting until after we have put him to bed.

AllTheChaos · 24/12/2023 14:31

Late Christmas Eve. Tree goes up that morning and is decorated, then presents from family and friends go under that evening. Presents from me go under once I’m the only one left awake! Santa fills the stockings on the beds whilst everyone is asleep that night 😊

Peanut91 · 24/12/2023 14:32

We put them under the tree as when they are wrapped/when we get given them. My 5yo and 2yo have never shown any interest in opening them early and neither does the dog.

Stockings go out once the kids are in bed

Isabelle70 · 24/12/2023 14:39

All adult household and presents have been going under the tree for the last week but no food/sweets as the dog will unwrap and eat it all!
