When do you put the presents under the tree?

We’ve always put them under there on Christmas Eve night, so when DS wakes up in the morning he can say “he’s been!” And see all the gifts ready to open.
My parents did the same with us.

But a few friends put them under on 22nd/23rd and even before.

Just curious what others do really.

As soon as I start buying things I wrap them and put them under. So the pile builds throughout the month. I hate leaving wrapping till the last minute and means I don’t have to find places to hide anything. When the dc were little and believed in Santa they’d wake up to a separate pile from him in the middle of the living room floor.

Mostly under the tree as and when wrapped, I think it's v good for the kids to see there's things for other people as well as themselves there. We might keep a couple back, especially if something's really large and therefore particularly excitement-inducing, or if any that are 100% obvious what they are even when wrapped. We don't subscribe to 'Father Christmas brought all the presents', he just fills the stockings.

Our tree doesn't usually go up til pretty late - like, the weekend before Christmas usually - so it's not like the presents are there for a very long time.

I think a tree without presents is a little bare, it's probably just how we are used to it though :)

I confess despite being almost 40 I still love having a peek at all the labels and getting a little flutter of excitement if one's for me!

BIossomtoes · 24/12/2023 14:47

Usually as and when they’re wrapped. However, we have a six month puppy and he’s already had the tree over so not at all this year. Hopefully he’ll have settled down a bit and we can go back to normal next year.

Doggymummar · 24/12/2023 14:48

About an hour ago. We usually do in about 10pm but we are super organised this year.

LolaSmiles · 24/12/2023 14:50

After the DC have gone to sleep on Christmas Eve.

Ponderingwindow · 24/12/2023 14:52

Most gifts go under the tree as soon as they are wrapped. The pile builds through the month, Only gifts from Santa wait until Christmas morning and they don’t go under the tree, they go by the fireplace.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 24/12/2023 14:54

As we wrap them.santa doesn't bring the presents under the tree so no need to wait

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 24/12/2023 15:00

Santa doesn't bring everything here, he only brings stocking presents. They appear overnight tonight.

Most years I put the rest of the presents under as they're wrapped. This year we're a bit pushed for space, so they've been stacked up in the spare room. I've had an hour to myself today so I got them all out and tetrised them in under the tree, without creating a tripping hazard.

Growing up DFs parents didnt get a tree or decorate or anything until he'd gone to sleep on Xmas eve. It was all done over night and they woke up Xmas morning to a decorated house, tree and presents. It sounds like fun, but oh my god the work it must have been! (and then everything came down before 12th night, hardly worth it!)

hopeishere · 24/12/2023 15:03

We don't.

Santa brings stockings and a big pile of presents. Any presents from family we exchange when we see them on the day.

soundsys · 24/12/2023 15:11

Presents from friends and family go under the tree as they're received (if they won't see DC at Xmas they give them before so they can open them on the day). Presents from us to each other go under as and when they're wrapped (and they're all there now!)

Presents from Santa go on the sofa so there's still the "he's been" moment in the morning 😁

VikingLady · 24/12/2023 15:16

Ours are out from last night because that's when I wrapped them, and I don't want to be carrying them around the house repeatedly.

Usually I'm frantically wrapping at midnight on Christmas Eve, so they go out after that.

honeylulu · 24/12/2023 15:16

As and when wrapped - love the gradual build up of gifts which looks really decorative. Also I have nowhere else to store the bloody things!

Santa only brings the stocking presents. They stay hidden until the adults go to bed. Beardy man does not the credit for the big presents in this house. We've worked too hard for them haha.

daffodilandtulip · 24/12/2023 15:17

We did what you do when the DC were little. They're teens now so I put the "bits" under the tree as I wrap them. Main presents come down on Christmas Eve once they've finally cleared off to bed. Although I do like it if it's an easily hidden present (usually an expensive gadget) which means I can put it down beforehand and they don't realise!

sixthvestibule · 24/12/2023 15:18

At least a day before Christmas Eve, so that DH still has time to think ‘Oh shit’ and rush to the show to buy the presents he has inevitably forgotten to get me.

ManateeFair · 24/12/2023 15:19

As soon as I’ve wrapped them. We don’t have any kids and I don’t really have anywhere handy to store a load of wrapped presents. Plus they look nice.

When I was a kid my parents used to put all the presents from other people (aunts and uncles, friends, siblings etc) under the tree as soon as they arrived but our presents from my parents stayed hidden until Christmas morning.

tokesqueen · 24/12/2023 15:33

When younger they use to go under the tree when the DC were asleep in bed.
Now they're 18 and 21 and up later than us we put them under in the morning.

SaltedCaramelIcedLatte · 24/12/2023 15:44

I usually spend Christmas Eve morning wrapping the presents then they go straight under the tree

WhycantIkeepthisbloodyplantalive · 24/12/2023 15:44

Presents from family/friends go under the tree when we receive them but 'santas presents' and stockings get put under the tree when all children asleep in bed on Christmas Eve. All presents get opened Christmas morning but we save the stockings for Boxing Day (we put a few presents and treats in there) because the kids hated that Christmas was 'over' after Christmas Day.

extrasushiplease · 24/12/2023 15:57

We exchange one gift Christmas Eve (we grab it out of our secret hoard and tend to choose either a less exciting present or one that will improve the morning to have right away: This year my fella is getting a new pack of underwear and the kids are getting some new laptop protectors this Eve! Both things they want/need but not exactly showstoppers) and then put the rest of the presents under the tree overnight. OR construct them, which I think DP is in for with my gift (I'm thrilled!)

Thankfully no one needs to be fooled about Santa, but my parents did the same during and after I believed as well.

BingoMarieHeeler · 24/12/2023 15:59

As I wrap them/whenever we get a tree, whatever comes last.

Obviously stocking and Santa presents come Xmas eve but they’re nothing to do with the tree - stockings in bedroom/landing.

MangoPepsiLover · 24/12/2023 15:59

Christmas Eve but only because DD will open any presents for anyone if they're under the tree (SN and a medical issue) so all presents from everyone go under once she's in bed Christmas Eve.

Butternutsqoosh · 24/12/2023 16:04

I'd love to put them out tonight but we have dogs so it will be in the morning due to previous selection box disasters!

Hotchocolate2023 · 24/12/2023 16:06

There's been 3 cases within a mile of under tree presents being cleared out by burglers in the last week. I'm nervous to even do it tonight and may get up at stupid o clock instead

MuggleMe · 24/12/2023 16:07

Soon as they're wrapped, which was unusually early this year. My 6yo has asked we hide them next year as she's found it hard to resist.

Stockings appear in bedrooms overnight.

squeekyturkey · 24/12/2023 16:09

Now that dd is a teen I put under tree as I wrap. I've kept one surprise gift hidden though which I'll bring out xmas day x
