Sunday lunch the day before Christmas day?

Are people really having a Sunday roast today? I'm working anyway so not cooking anything, but my SIL is grumbling on the family WhatsApp about having to do all the trimmings 2 days in a row!

No roast here and never cook one on a Sunday.
Nigella’s gammon with proper jacket potatoes and homemade cauliflower cheese.

Nope! Brunch in a greasy spoon then picky bits with champagne for dinner

As per our Christmas eve tradition.

Mmm! That's a good tradition. I am most impressed with 'picky bits' and champagne. As they would say on Masterchef, you are elevating the picky bits!

dudsville · 24/12/2023 10:00

We never do a sunday roast, i love the idea but it's so often not wanted that it falls of our radar quickly. Normal eating habits until dinner tonight, our company arrives for dinner. I wouldn't do roast dinners twice, I'd love it but the others wouldn't.

angelikacpickles · 24/12/2023 10:00

Why is she doing it and complaining about it? Who is expecting this from her?

Caspianberg · 24/12/2023 10:09

Nope.
Soup, bread, cheese for lunch
Spinach, paneer and chickpea curry, with homemade roti for dinner.

FreebieWallopFridge · 24/12/2023 10:10

Of course not!

cakecoffeecakecoffee · 24/12/2023 10:10

Nope! Christmas Eve we have picky bits.

ZombieGirl86 · 24/12/2023 10:11

Home made pizzas and nibbles. Usually for a meat and potatoe pie in slow cooker on Christmas eve

diddl · 24/12/2023 10:11

Raclette for us.

"Having to do"?

Who is making her?

Perhaps she could scale back the "trimmings" today?

Or maybe she's after some praise for being a martyr?

Brendabigbaps · 24/12/2023 10:12

Costco lasagne for a big lunch, tea will be cheese & porkpie (traditional Xmas Eve tea)

jay55 · 24/12/2023 10:16

Yup.
I'm not delighted to have to cook two roasts.
But my dad has cancer and has requested it so couldn't say no.
And he can't even eat potatoes so it's really just going to be meat and veg and pigs in blankets.

This reminds me of my old next door neighbour. She didn't work, and was a typical housewife in that she did everything in the house, cooking, cleaning, washing, looked after her husband and kids, very traditional, Sunday lunch every week.
I remember one year her saying to me she didn't know what to do about Christmas Dinner because it was on a Monday and they would have had a Sunday dinner the day before. She even thought about making sausages and mash on CHRISTMAS DAY so there wasn't two roast dinners in a row. The concept that they could have something different on the Sunday instead was completely alien to her 😂
In the end sense won through and they had something else for Sunday lunch though she was clearly uncomfortable with it bless her.
Loved her to bits though, batty as she was! Haha

Good lord, no. We've had a big breakfast (pancakes for the DC, bagels, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs for me and DH); and are going to our favourite restaurant for dinner tonight. Snacky stuff if hungry in between.

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 24/12/2023 10:47

Absolutely not!!

Ohmylovejune · 24/12/2023 10:53

In recent years I've made Christmas Eve easy with a fish platter from the fish shop which I serve over ice with fresh bread either bought from.local bakery or made in our bread machine. Looks and tastes fabulous and is soooo easy.

Then we have cocktails made by anyone who fancies making them and champagne or fizz with the platter depending on whether we've been given a champers during the year or not.

This makes today easy for me when Ive got 6 adults to cater for as everyone stays with us. The fish isn't cheap but we compromise by having a frozen not fresh bird for Christmas Day.

Beezknees · 24/12/2023 10:56

I never cook a Sunday roast let alone on Christmas eve. Far too much time and effort. If I fancy a roast on a Sunday I'll go out for a carvery, usually I just do a normal meal.

CissOff · 24/12/2023 11:14

We are going out for a late lunch so we can have a tapas style bits later and not have to worry about cooking. Absolutely won’t be having a roast though!

festivetinseling · 24/12/2023 11:16

We're having fajitas. Very festive.😂

Nope

Usually we would have a takeaway but we had that last night instead.
Just be something smallish Today though,, certainly no roast.

festivetinseling · 24/12/2023 11:21

Pourmeanotherwine · 24/12/2023 09:31

Nope. We normally go out for pizza Christmas eve, but DH and I both have Covid, so we're going to have spag bol.

Oh no, what rotten timing - hope you are both feeling okay tomorrow. Flowers

Soontobe60 · 24/12/2023 11:25

Well shes a mug if shes doing this 2 days in a row!
We cut down on food in the run up to Christmas all the better to enjoy the feast!
So yesterday we had toast for breakfast and take away pizza for tea. Today we've just had eggs and bacon and will have egg and chips tonight. If DH expected anything else, he’d have to make it himself.

itsgettingweird · 24/12/2023 11:27

Not a chance.

And I'm not even cooking Christmas dinner as going to my bothers 😂

We have hot lunch and then part baked rolls and picky bits for dinner.

Boiled eggs for breakfast and Xmas lunch followed by cheese and crackers.

Boxing Day will be gammon in the slow cooker and part baked rolls and leftover anything!

JustlikeElllie · 24/12/2023 11:29

No way. We usually have a chippy but as it's Sunday the hood one is closed. We're having peri peri chicken, chips, salad, halloumi.

thedamnseason · 24/12/2023 11:30

No way in fact haven't cooked a roast in December at all. We don't do a roast every Sunday.

Everyone fends for themselves if we're home but we're going out later so will eat there.

Elmo230885 · 24/12/2023 11:39

Nah. It's our traditional pie and peas tonight with sweet bits afterwards.

I did do a mini Sunday dinner type thing yesterday (swede & potato mash, broccoli, pie and Yorkshire puds). Partly as I'm aware the kids have eaten so much rubbish and probably will continue to do so until next year 😆 🤣 and partly to try the pigs in blankets gravy!

(The gravy was beautiful, game changer and suitable for vegetarians!)
