Not to want to have words that I find offensive in thread titles?

Well,am I?

I object very strongly to people using the word "cunt" as a perjorative term - I think it's offensive and degrading to women. I challenge people who use it in RL. Do I have a point? Or not?

OP posts:

"I agree entirely, it is totally unnecessary. It puts me off reading the thread, because if the poster has to start with offensive language it is generally not worth reading anyway"

I dont know....
I thought the cunting sainsburys thread was very eloquent!

Christywhisty · 16/03/2008 12:21

Actually find a lot of the language on Mumsnet offensive, can't believe so many supposed intelligent women can't compose a sentence without swearing.
I really hate the word F wit, just remind me of immature students who think they are intelligent.
I hardly know anyone in RL who use lnaguage like this, and most other websites manage with out swearing, they lose nothing from it and still manage to have a decent conversation or debate.

I agree. I manage to offend loads of people without swearing; tho I'll fucking swear as well if I want because I think it's big and clever.

scottishmummy · 16/03/2008 12:29

discussion forum's by their nature will have content some will find offensive.essentially use your discretion and report it if you are offended.

some thread titles i glance and just think nope and move on. and wouldn't participate in the discussion

Janni · 16/03/2008 12:29

Thread hidden BIWI. I only just learned I could do that!

unknownrebelbang · 16/03/2008 12:32

I'm sure I've said it before, but I don't like swearing in thread titles.

Doesn't bother me in the posts themselves.

WanderingTrolley · 16/03/2008 12:35

Use of profanity not reflective of low IQ, Christy.

BecauseImWoeufIt · 16/03/2008 12:50

I have done some good today then!

fairyfly · 16/03/2008 15:55

'I agree, Freckle, I wouldn't talk to people with such limited vocabularies in RL so I hate seeing them on here."

Contradiction in terms.

Love your snobbery though, what do you do, ask people if they use foul language and if they do walk off???

I'll have you know i am dead dead clever and that and i have looooods of qualifikations, so sod off.

and by the way, you don't see people on here, you read, duh

AbbeyA · 16/03/2008 16:39

I find the words offensive-I don't think we need to reclaim them-lose them altogether would be a better option! If people disagree with me I expect them to say so in civil terms and I don't expect them to swear at me, it doesn't happen, but if it did I should avoid any contact in the future. It is verbal abuse, said to be intimidating, and I can't think of anywhere that I would find it acceptable.

BecauseImWoeufIt · 16/03/2008 16:41

But they're not swearing at you by using them in a post/thread title, are they? The language is being used to express an emotional response to something/someone else.

AbbeyA · 16/03/2008 16:44

Perhaps people should calm down by counting to ten before they post!!

wannaBe · 16/03/2008 16:45

it's a vile word. and no need for it IMO. it's not something that just comes out - one does have the option to read what is typed before posting it.

And I do wonder if the op of that thread would have been congratulated quite so much on a fantastically hillarious thread if she had not been a regular. .

Scattybird · 16/03/2008 16:47

Am I going mad, you are reading on the world wide web which cannot possibly be policed without draining resources that are simply not there. So anything is possible really. Yet you are bothered about swearing. I think you should set parental controls to whatever they are for children and never read an adult site again then TBH.

AbbeyA · 16/03/2008 16:54

I don't think anyone is suggesting policing the web! The OP objected to a particular word, I was just agreeing. You have to put up with what people post, I don't see anything wrong in pointing out that not everyone uses that type of language, and that they find it offensive. I shall now hide those threads, I hadn't realised that you could. There is one on here at the moment about organic food and the middle classes, I only read the first few messages but it is like the child in the playground who sets out to shock!

LLD · 16/03/2008 17:54

There is a petition in Darfur you can sign that wishes to outlaw all cussing. I believe there is also one in Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Iraq, one started today in Tibet, and probably East Grinstead, or at the very least Wadhurst.

LittleBella · 16/03/2008 17:57

Yes YABU

You can choose not to use the word yourself but on the www you can't really dictate to other people what words they should use or not. You can press the ignore button if it really bothers you.

SheikYerboutisEggHunt · 16/03/2008 17:59

I personally find it offesnsive that peolple are disgusted by a word that describes female genitalia

I find it incredibly misogynistic

I use the word a lot, but then I am a as thick as shit

BrothelSprouts · 16/03/2008 17:59

"It puts me off reading the thread, because if the poster has to start with offensive language it is generally not worth reading anyway".

That's ridiculous, and patently untrue.

Some of the most entertaining threads on MN in the past few years have been earthy debates between intelligent and interesting adults.

SheikYerboutisEggHunt · 16/03/2008 18:01

Also, this is not a website for 4 year olds.

The title "mumsnet" gives away the fact that it is aimed at adults.

If you want to look at the computer with your 4 yo, may I suggest the CBeebies website

BecauseImWoeufIt · 16/03/2008 18:02

LOL at redirecting people to CBeebies!

(See SYBEH - your posts do get recognised!)

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 16/03/2008 18:08

I don't like seeing the word either. But I think that that is my issue, and I don't agree with censorship.

It's a difficult one really, and people will never agree about it.

Sorry, I'm not really very helpful am I?!

TheAntiFlounce · 16/03/2008 18:11

It's a funny thing.

My friend's dad used to call her and her brother "You daft cunts!" when they made a mess or were squabbling ... whereas my dad would boil over with ill suppressed violent rage, and spit out things like "You stupid little girl!"

It wasn't my friends dad who scared the shit out of me. He was an is lovely.
