Not to want to have words that I find offensive in thread titles?

Well,am I?

I object very strongly to people using the word "cunt" as a perjorative term - I think it's offensive and degrading to women. I challenge people who use it in RL. Do I have a point? Or not?

I agree with Seeker

JodieG1 · 16/03/2008 10:16

I agree Pointe

SueW · 16/03/2008 10:18

I agree - I'd rather people didn't swear in titles. In threads, fair enough, but not in the titles.

Shaniece · 16/03/2008 10:44

Hi seeker - I was just about the post about the same thing. I personally hate the C word (can't even bring myself to type it let alone say it). There is absoultely no need to use filthy language like that. Should be reported!!

Shaniece · 16/03/2008 10:46

Also, I have never heard a woman using the C word - so I am guessing a man started that post in Chat.

The word doesn't bother me in the slightest, no single word bothers me, someone could call you much less than a C* and mean it so much more.

I love words, all words, and think the fact that every word can be used in so many different circumstances/with so many different connotations is amazing.

However I personally wouldn't start a thread with swearing in the title, I also try to to swear as little as possible because I think other words suit the situation better, but I think using the C* word can often be an indication of how serious something is.

If I was to call someone a C* it would be the highest possible insult I could use, and that is why I would be using it.

BecauseImWoeufIt · 16/03/2008 11:03

Shaniece - what a ridiculous thing to say!

Why on earth wouldn't a woman use it or start a thread with the word in it or its title?

It's not a word I like, or use, but I see no reason why it shouldn't be used, on an adult forum.

Those of you who are worried about your children reading it should move them away from your computer or close MN if you're not using it.

And if we start by forbidding the word 'cunt' where do we stop? Lots of people don't like the words 'God' or 'Jesus' being used, for example.

Shaniece · 16/03/2008 11:14

I have never heard a woman using the c word, it is a revolting word. In fact, I have only heard 'some' men using it - I think people know how disgusting the word is and refrain from using it. I would avoid conversation with anyone (male or female) that used the c word.
I also do not want to be explaining to my 5 year old DD what the C word means when she reads it on the screen.

BecauseImWoeufIt · 16/03/2008 11:15

Well don't let her read it then! MN is for adults not for children.

Why should we have to be censored just in case some posters leave it open for their children to see?

Not a word I like or use, but if others want to use it than it's up to them.

VictorianSqualor · 16/03/2008 11:19

Shaneice for your 5 yr old DD to pick up that one word I'd be pretty shocked, especially as there are so many on screen, but surely if you're worried then she shouldn't be reading it?
I did say at xmas I thoguht a thread title saying 'father christmas isn't real' was unfair as children talking to parents would likely have picked it out pretty quickly, with xmas being on their mind, but C* I'm not so sure about.

WanderingTrolley · 16/03/2008 11:22

Shaniece that doesn't mean no woman ever uses it. I know people who find it very offensive and I never use it near them. I get the point about thread titles, but sometimes mn is very bawdy/crude/sexual and that's reflected in the thread titles.

What VS?! Not real?!

BigTeuchLittleTeuch · 16/03/2008 11:29

Oh good...a classic for a Sunday morning!

That reminds me...must nip to Sainsburys

BecauseImWoeufIt · 16/03/2008 11:29

Oh he is real WT. But did you know that he's not whiter than white - he's actually shacked up with the Tooth Fairy!

BecauseImWoeufIt · 16/03/2008 11:30

Oh, and don't even ask what they do with the Easter Bunny ...

BigTeuchLittleTeuch · 16/03/2008 11:31

I don't mind it, and I use it. However, I am careful about the company I use it in.

But, please, let's not get into the whole debate about whether Mumsnet should be censored in case children read inappropriate language or content...

'If I was to call someone a C* it would be the highest possible insult I could use, and that is why I would be using it.'

So shouldn't we put this in the same category as golliwogs? Whether you find the word offensive or not, please understand that many people do, so don't use it unless you wish to show your lack of concern for those around you.

monkeytrousers · 16/03/2008 11:41

You need to read the Vagina Monologues.

Or just press 'hide thread'

fortyplus · 16/03/2008 11:43

Of course if I hadn't replied to it I wouldn't be stuck with the bloody thing on my 'threads i'm on' list for the next week!

lucyellensmum · 16/03/2008 11:54

I don't personally have a problem with the C word. I don't really see it as mysogynistic either. But i do recognise that others find it extremely offensive and don't use it. I have probably used it on here before, i shouldnt have and i apologise. But i do try

I find the N and P word much mucm more offensive and would challenge anyone in real life who used it in front of me. Those words have only ever been used in a derrogatory way and they make my toes curl.

My lovely FIL is the epitome of Alf Garnett, and he uses the C word in conversation, i have to say that it makes me cringe to hear this coming from a 73 year old man who is otherwise lovely and well mannered. But it is just part of who he is, he is certainly not rough or unintelligent. He is from South London but im not sure if that is why he uses it. I have never ever heard him use it as a serious insult. He uses it, like this, "oh you know that silly C*^" who lives at number 6". I have to say i really have to be careful when ive been there for the day because i tend to slip too. NOT good in front of my two year old, and DP and i have often thought of mentioning this to FIL, but to be fair we dont see him very often so its not an issue. The poor man is quite ill actually so wouldnt want to upset him. We do look at each other and raise our eyebrows though.

It is just a word at the end of the day, i just don't associate it with my vagina, although sometimes my DP calls it that, but definately not in a horrible way, but i dont really like it. But then there isnt really a word for it that doesnt make me cringe - pussy, fanny, just sound so unsexy, minge is awful, vagina - ewwwwww.

Janni · 16/03/2008 11:58

BecauseImWoeufit (great name BTW) - of course MN is for adults but in reality, if you've only got one PC and you're fitting in MN around your other jobs at home there WILL be times when kids look over your shoulder. My oldest is 11.
I would be really upset for him to see a thread title with 'cunt' in it on a site he knows I regularly use.

BecauseImWoeufIt · 16/03/2008 11:59

I can appreciate that Janni, but why don't you minimise the thread - takes a nano second and then he won't see it!

VictorianSqualor · 16/03/2008 12:13

"So shouldn't we put this in the same category as golliwogs? Whether you find the word offensive or not, please understand that many people do, so don't use it unless you wish to show your lack of concern for those around you."

No, not at all, I cannot stand the word hate, I think it is a lazy description and I beleive that hate is an emotion that can only harm those who feel it, I also believe that it is used too easily and do not allow my children to use it, does that mean no-one else should say it?

monkeytrousers · 16/03/2008 12:15

Stay away from bus shelters won't you!

Freckle · 16/03/2008 12:18

We all have our particular likes and dislikes when it comes to words. However, there are some which are obviously very offensive to a lot of people. Surely it's just common courtesy to avoid using them unless it is the only way you can express your feelings? No one is suggesting that the words shouldn't be used in threads; just avoid their use in thread titles. I don't think this is censorship; just a little consideration for others.
