Fed up with the Instagram showing perfect homes, when the real world is much messier..: so show me your normal homes… here’s my messy (and a bit dated) kitchen

Mine isn't normally this 'tidy' - there are seven of us living here, and it's usually a hot mess when the grandkids (2 &3) are around.

Kitchen is currently cluttered (and has been for weeks), not been cleaned since cooking, and the door came off the bin cupboard 6 years ago and it's still not been replaced.

Your cupboards are MASSIVE

From an older Glaswegian still living in Glasgow 😁

Oh wow ! Thank you.

This is a great idea, I feel so inadequate when I see these perfect homes. Mine is clean and reasonably tidy but it looks tatty and scruffy because almost every room needs decorating and I haven't got the energy to do it. I have been thinking of getting a decorator in but the mere thought of the expense and the upheaval almost brings me out in rash. I never judge anyone on their home but i am do hard on myself, I am always thinking "oh what a tatty slum" and blaming myself for being lazy and unmotivated to tackle it . I had an endless stream of things going wrong, leaking roof, big electrical fault, broken heating, broken toilet and sorting it all out has costs loads and I got so sick of having workmen in the place that I can't face anymore at the moment

This is totally me, really can’t face the thought of builders/decorators in the house (have had really bad experiences in the past) but really need to do some essential works. TBF the kitchen was done about 4 years ago and is the best room in the house, the rest is just embarrassing Blush

I posted a picture of our very tidy kitchen. But....that's how we live. We don't own much stuff and we're an adults only household.
What am I supposed to do - mess up the kitchen on purpose for a photo?

😂😂
I just saw your kitchen and thought it looked beautiful! But, I thought it won't be long until the Mumsnet trolls come into force!
You flaunt your beautiful kitchen and be proud of it.
Jealously is a trait when you count someone else's blessings!

Redburnett · 22/12/2023 17:50

The answer is to stop wasting time on instagram.

CupofTeaAndsomeToast · 22/12/2023 17:50

Took this after we changed the lino. The stuff down before was from the 1980s and absolutely vile. The lav is over 100 years old and impossible to clean as the glaze is worn.

Cosycardigans · 22/12/2023 17:51

most of the photos shared are like instagram houses! 😂i love them all though.
OP your kitchen is amazing- i'd pay money for that retro look! @Noseyneeps

Notsurehwhattdo · 22/12/2023 17:07

I suppose you could just NOT post a photo as it doesn't fit the brief? 🤷‍♂️

The brief is normal homes, she met the brief fully.

CupofTeaAndsomeToast · 22/12/2023 17:56

We repainted the kitchen last year and put down new lino. The house hasn't really been properly updated for decades but we're comfortable as it is.

Took these this minute as I sit on an armchair in the nook off the kitchen with the 2 dogs asleep on the couch. I'm literally making dinner with a mess on the table and also doing some baking for a dinner party on boxing day so a LONG way from tidy and instagram ready but definitely lived in. We've lived in this house for 28 years and have had 4 kids here..now all home for Christmas with partners..I love my house 😄🥰

Your cupboards are MASSIVE

Best thing about this kitchen, so much cupboard space. There's also a big floor to ceiling cupboard next to the fridge and another cupboard above the fridge.

HateMyKitchenLights · 22/12/2023 18:08

I follow a lot of house accounts on IG and always end up feeling a bit envious of the beautiful, pristine (probably AI) houses. It's fab to see lovely, cosy, welcoming but basically 'normal people' rooms that are actually used, instead!

Plus I'm basically just v nosey 😂

EarringsandLipstick · 22/12/2023 18:09

I've really enjoyed looking at photos here - they are all so warm & homely looking.

As there's more variation in house style in the UK than in Ireland, the different types of room size, design & decor are interesting to see too.

Warwickshireisnice · 22/12/2023 18:20

steamedxmaspudding · 22/12/2023 17:17

Here's my kitchen - it's usually pretty tidy as DH is a clean freak. The rest of the house, not so much!

If you squint you can see the Christmas tree on the patio - one of my less bright ideas, it keeps falling over in all the strong winds 😂

Is it a fake or real one? We have a big fake twiggy tree with lights, fell over endlessly last year but this year we put it in a heavy garden pot and filled it up with earth - worked a treat!

spuddel · 22/12/2023 18:22

My kitchen is very 'busy' I realise - I like having everything I need out and that includes cook books which are just out of shot.

God my house is messier than all of these 😆

Mine too lol 😂

Warwickshireisnice · 22/12/2023 18:23

I love the kitchen with the big table and the armchair in it, we temporarily moved a two seater sofa in to our kitchen diner and it’s stayed there, so nice and comfy to sit there and watch my husband cook 😂🎄

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 22/12/2023 18:25

I like your kitchen OP. I don't get this constant replacing of "dated" kitchens, I prefer my big "dated" kitchen and think many modern ones look soulless.

Agreed. The grey one up thread was a prime example of a complete soul sucker.

I think this might be my daughter's house.

Worrying my mum might be on Mumsnet now 😂😂

JaninaDuszejko · 22/12/2023 18:32

I know everyone slags off instagram all the time but you just need to remember they are basically using their home (posted on the internet with their name and often possible to work out their address) to generate advertising content and it is their job.

Anyway, I also love instagram for the real life inspiration given by updates like this: Blue bathroom , scroll through to see what the bathroom originally looked like.

What annoys me about my home is that is is very, very old and all the woodwork seems a bit battered and knocked up. So I could clean all damned day (I don't, btw) and it would still look a state.

So depressing!

I agree with this! I could spend ages cleaning our old house and it will never look spotless. If I go to my friends new build, even though it’s messier than mine it still looks cleaner/tidier!

DilemmaDelilah · 22/12/2023 18:38

@Thighdentitycrisis I'm sorry I don't know the manufacturer. I got it through a long cal company who design, build and supply. I do love my kitchen but I wouldn't go back to them again due to issues elsewhere.....

Chelsea26 · 22/12/2023 18:44

My kitchen is my absolute pride and joy - I love it so much!

BUT my partner has been building a garden room for the past 8 months so my normally insta-worthy (but not insta’d because I wouldn’t have a clue!) has been a store/workshop for ages!

End is in sight though - thank goodness!

All your houses look lovely - I am nosey so just loving seeing what other people love.
