Fed up with the Instagram showing perfect homes, when the real world is much messier..: so show me your normal homes… here’s my messy (and a bit dated) kitchen

My SIL has painted various kitchen and bathroom tiles with white tile paint recently and it looks really smart - I was surprised by the finish. Could you try that?

Think our kitchen could do with a tidy before relatives come for Christmas

It just needs a nice candle and a bit of tinsel 😂😂

FreshWinterMorning

I love your fireplace in the 1st photo !

sorry I don't yet know how to tag people.

Click the three dots on the top right of the post you want to quote and then click "quote" 😊

From an older Glaswegian still living in Glasgow 😁

ChickenLiverPate · 22/12/2023 17:03

I posted a picture of our very tidy kitchen. But....that's how we live. We don't own much stuff and we're an adults only household.
What am I supposed to do - mess up the kitchen on purpose for a photo?

Fannyfiggs · 22/12/2023 17:04

@OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon or press the @ key and start typing the user name you want to tag. The user name should come up before you've typed it all.

Why is quoting so beyond me! 🤦🏼‍♀️ This was in response to a few people saying some posters' homes don't look messy enough.

I suppose you could just NOT post a photo as it doesn't fit the brief? 🤷‍♂️

I did this once before and it worked well. They were filthy disgusting blue tiles from the 70s and I needed a quick remedy before we ultimately renovated. It worked well.
The paint is pretty horrible as it’s sticky as it goes on but dries to a nice matt finish.

The brief of "To ask you to show me your normal home…"
I did. It fits the brief.

HateMyKitchenLights · 22/12/2023 17:09

@Definitelylivedin I love your kitchen

Messy but cosy! View from bed. I love old wood furniture and vintage details

I have a mirror like that, it's over 100 years old I grabbed it in a family house clear.

KitchenMess · 22/12/2023 17:11

Kitchen is currently cluttered (and has been for weeks), not been cleaned since cooking, and the door came off the bin cupboard 6 years ago and it's still not been replaced.

Just shut the door it will be fine

Deliadidit · 22/12/2023 17:12

Some of these pics have a got a really lovely homely feel - so inviting.

steamedxmaspudding · 22/12/2023 17:17

Here's my kitchen - it's usually pretty tidy as DH is a clean freak. The rest of the house, not so much!

If you squint you can see the Christmas tree on the patio - one of my less bright ideas, it keeps falling over in all the strong winds 😂

@steamedxmaspudding So the tree is outside?! Does it have Xmas lights on it?!

Yes and yes!

We don't have room for a proper tree inside so we just have a little tabletop one in a pot. Then I insisted we buy the biggest one we could find (DH was very unimpressed) to put outside, it's really nice looking at it through the glass when we're in the kitchen. I nicked the idea from our friends who always do the same thing. Think we need to work on stabilising it though as it's already fallen down twice 😂

Currently trapped under a sleeping, poorly child but this is my view. Clean but lived in and loved. Every home is beautiful ❤️

I think this might be my daughter's house.

MarkWithaC · 22/12/2023 17:30

I'm not posting mine as I don't want to be spotted by people I know IRL. Suffice it to say someone came to stay once and said, 'I love your kitchen!' Me (proud): 'Thanks!' Her: '...there's just stuff EVERYWHERE.'
I mean, she wasn't wrong Grin

There's a hashtag on Twitter called DuvetKnowItsChristmas. People post pics of their childhood and other family homes where they're spending Christmas, often sleeping under Disney duvets and the like from when they were about 10. Or in a spare room next to the ironing board. It's a lovely thing as it's a good corrective to the idea that we all have Sunday-supplement beautiful, tasteful gaffs now.

Posting photos of your lounge / kitchen is hardly a security risk. My house along with probably millions is available to view
online now and we brought our 6 years ago..
Sold properties are still archived online for years , with photos, from websites such as zoopla .

This includes the full address. No one on here is giving their actual real names or addresses.

I’ve lived here thirteen years and photos of the house by the previous owners are still on the internet. I sometimes look them up because their version of this house seems so much tidier than mine 🙁 Been zero issues with every room in my house being up for over a decade. And the address is on there 😯

SweetFemaleAttitude · 22/12/2023 13:55

I am baffled by the posters thinking photo's of someones kitchen, could be used nefariously.

So that way of thinking, means Rightmove, where it names the actual street you live on, should not exist, or in fact, any estate agents if that's the case 😂😂

You don't out yourself as having a Mumsnet account by listing your home on Rightmove.

Once someone thinks "hey, that's Jane's kitchen", they know that Jane has an account and might start joining the dots of other details posted under different usernames or analysing writing style.

Janieforever · 22/12/2023 17:41

InflatableSanta · 22/12/2023 16:53

I know! It's baffling. Half the pictures on here (at least) belong in the "insta ready" category

The op asked for normal homes, that’s what she’s got. Normal has a huge variety, none of these are insta homes. And no one is posting something pristine saying oook at the mess, as mess also has a spectrum
