Fed up with the Instagram showing perfect homes, when the real world is much messier..: so show me your normal homes… here’s my messy (and a bit dated) kitchen

Honestly my home is always spotless.

Why are you trying to make yourself feel better about having a messy home by belittling people who keep theirs clean?

I assume you don't have multiple young children? My house isn't a state but it's not a show home either! A completely tidy house can wait, right now I'm enjoying being present for my children, and having some down time when they sleep.

SiobhanSharpe · 22/12/2023 15:23

DH is putting up a blind in the kitchen but TBH this is a fairly normal sort of scene for us. Neither of us has the tidy gene.

This is a great idea, I feel so inadequate when I see these perfect homes. Mine is clean and reasonably tidy but it looks tatty and scruffy because almost every room needs decorating and I haven't got the energy to do it. I have been thinking of getting a decorator in but the mere thought of the expense and the upheaval almost brings me out in rash. I never judge anyone on their home but i am do hard on myself, I am always thinking "oh what a tatty slum" and blaming myself for being lazy and unmotivated to tackle it . I had an endless stream of things going wrong, leaking roof, big electrical fault, broken heating, broken toilet and sorting it all out has costs loads and I got so sick of having workmen in the place that I can't face anymore at the moment

But it could potentially be identifying on here. I am baffled by the posters thinking that couldn't happen.

If you want to post lots of random pics of your home on here, then crack on, but that doesn't mean others want to - or should. There is nothing wrong with not wanting to. And posters not wanting to post pics of their HOME on mumsnet, don't deserve to be mocked and derided by people who think it's funny and clever to post snarky posts featuring silly little LOL-ing emojis.

Many people don't want to share. This thread tells you that, because most people haven't posted pics of their home/inside their home on here! (And they're not bloody going to.) Most pics on here so far, have come from the OP.

You okay? No one's going to come around and make you post a picture of your house. Why so angry and defensive?

As a previous poster says, anyone who's selling a home on the Internet has not just dozens of photos of their house and garden on display, but it's published with the address and a picture of the exterior too.

NotSienna · 22/12/2023 15:25

Absolutely gorgeous home. I love the colour scheme

Strictlydogs · 22/12/2023 15:26

We had some work done a while back, so have a home.fitted second hand kitchen and very old red carpets. One day we will have the money to pull it together!

I spent yesterday hanging a few pictures . My house is definitely not instaworthy, it's a riot of colour and charity shop treasure.

I love that shade of green. Can you remember what colour/ make of paint it was?

annoyedatlandlord · 22/12/2023 15:05

Don’t be silly the inside of people’s homes is all over Rightmove with a street name too.

what do you think a nefarious power could do with images of the inside of someone’s house?

The difference is that Rightmove doesn’t include “current owner posts on Mumsnet as annoyedatlandlord“. And some of us post quite frankly about the people in our life - she’s talking about “someone I know” recognising it, the “nefarious power” is your invention. I wouldn’t like revealing to the rest of my family and friends that my DM is doubly incontinent, but that’s what I might do if I posted my recognisable kichen.

Haffiana · 22/12/2023 15:30

I wonder if the people whose anxiety outweighs their ability to risk assess the danger of putting a pic of their kitchen on the internet are the same famous MN posters who daren't open their front door if someone knocks.

I bet a Venn diagram of the two groups would pretty much be a single circle.

MereDintofPandiculation · 22/12/2023 15:32

As a previous poster says, anyone who's selling a home on the Internet has not just dozens of photos of their house and garden on display, but it's published with the address and a picture of the exterior too. but not with their mumsnet name as a password to accessing all the private stuff they may have posted to this anonymous forum

Strictlydogs · 22/12/2023 15:35

I think that is a different definition of safe though. I interpreted the earlier message about danger as being about someone managing to defraud posters based on their pics etc, as against 'just' being outed.

The latter doesn't really bother me as I don't post anything controversial.

Isopedia · 22/12/2023 15:35

I have a christmas/December birthday theme going on in my living room right now. There's also a half dressed child playing roblox just out of shot for extra realism.

I think your kitchen has nice character OP 😊

I particularly like the tins of Xmas chocolates hidden on top of the cupboards!

irisgg7 · 22/12/2023 15:22

@girlmeetsboy you have lots of NHS letters in your photo...

Why is your fridge int he middle of the room?

I know my husband has been deaf since he had flu and they are investigating, the fridge is against the wall, odd shaped room :-)

ChickenLiverPate · 22/12/2023 15:40

Here's ours. I painted the kitchen units myself recently 🙂

Current view from bed. The my little pony belongs to my dog.
Any one room in my house is normally 10 mins away from being visitor ready - it all clean as we have a cleaner, but needs a fast tidy round

That is not my cat

I have no idea who's cat that is 😂 my cat is lying beside me.

Ours is the typical new built kitchen. Looks ok, but everything is just so boringly grey

looks like my mums

This is so going to only attract the showoffs

Noooooo… that’s not the point of the thread. It’s a thread to celebrate the mundane, messiness and imperfection of a normal family home

Crikeyalmighty · 22/12/2023 15:48

This is my conservatory with humongous ironing pike on a chair and one corner of lounge with Hs 'stuff' on table- where it permanently resides- just the content changes!

of course. I post a picture of my 'normal' home and next thing I know, all my cookies are gone. no thanks.

What does that mean?

Isopedia · 22/12/2023 15:50

It means Santa will come early and nick the hobnobs.

Here's ours. I painted the kitchen units myself recently 🙂

Beautiful. I love the open plan look. It would never work in our house. 1 untidy husband and 2 untidy sons. Obviously I’m perfect 😂
