Fed up with the Instagram showing perfect homes, when the real world is much messier..: so show me your normal homes… here’s my messy (and a bit dated) kitchen

Love this thread! So many homely, lived in houses - exactly how they should be!

Quite messy but wfh trying to get everything done so I can log off and enjoy a break!

Why do you have a Royal Mail post box in your kitchen?!

lechatnoir · 23/12/2023 12:27

Christ alive it’s not a race to the bottom - normal doesn’t just mean old or messy. I’m a neat freak and live in a new build and we are very ‘normal’ in terms of income & life but I’m not posting as my kitchen is big, very tidy and new so of course I’ll be bragging and being totally inconsiderate of everyone else 🙄
FWIW whilst some wouldn’t be my taste or are messier than I could cope with it’s really lovely to see and really no different to going in your mates’ houses - some are tiny, some are piled high with stuff, some are minimalist, some are huge yet you don’t judge your mates because of it so no idea why anyone would think people are doing the same here.

Loving pretty much every single home on here!!
Can't get over how unique most of them are and honestly feel a little jealous. I hate clinical aesthetics and we have just moved into our first proper home and I cannot for the life of me make it look all lovely and eclectic and homely like those on here. If i add colour it looks random and awful. Yet every home I have seen on here looks beautiful

Personally I like colours, lots of them and all at once. This is a small corner in the living room.

Our kitchen with pile of washing up and kid's crafts all over the table, no air fryer but bread machine to the left of DH 😁 This is one of our most lived in rooms and I have so many plans for it when I have a bit more time/headspace.

Other photo from before I painted the table and chairs, showing where the hob is.

Curious what people with A LOT of stuff on their dining tables do when it’s time to eat? Are there other eating spaces. I like the look personally as it seems social but still curious.

Wel · 23/12/2023 12:54

its all about the angles!

The person whose laundry is on the table is still in bed. Would normally take it up but making a point now. Big lamp has lost its home to the Christmas tree.

We need to recreate our dinning area space so it works better and used. This thread has been really handy for ideas so thanks everyone who has posted and keep the pictures coming!! :)

SheerLucks · 23/12/2023 12:59

This was our kitchen yesterday evening (but after our teenage DCs had cleared up).

We just move our stuff. It's usually kid's stuff that's accumulated over the day.

GrouchyKiwi · 23/12/2023 13:07

This is my lounge right now. It is in need of a tidy and vacuum but that will have to wait till I'm well again.

This is our everyday chaos.

Christ that's creepy! Misses point of thread

Boatlifeisnotallinstagram · 23/12/2023 13:12

You want a small kitchen, I'll give you a small kitchen 😁. And raise you a teeny tiny lounge diner. But it is always clean and tidy because otherwise living in such a small space it would be intolerable not to mention dangerous otherwise.

I had high hopes for this thread and seeing some real pictures of small kitchens with dated worktops and mess, but this being MN some people have turned it into a 'look at my new rennovation' 'aren't I so middle class' thread. It's a shame. It was a chance for normal people to feel happy with what they have and not have a skewed idea of what a normal house is, and get away from the insta gloatfest, but as usual some people can't resist a stealth boast. I suppose the OP asked for normal homes and it is subjective, so in your circle of friends these might be the 'normal' and not so nice homes

Why do you need to see "real" pics of small, messy, dated kitchens? You are being a bit silly to have such a narrow view of "normal". I used to work in the community and so visited lots of different homes. I went to some low income families who had lovely kitchens because they were very tidy, clean, and made an effort to make them look pretty (with flowers, tastefully painted cupboards/walls etc). Equally, I've been to some houses which were huge and probably worth millions and their kitchens were falling apart, messy and bordering on hoarder territory. Why is messy and dated "normal"? Plenty of people on very "normal" incomes have nice kitchens.

CheeseCrackers45 · 23/12/2023 13:19

These kitchens all look spotless compared to mine. I still need to hoover so excuse Cheerios on the floor 😂 Kitchen was fitted very early 2000s so a bit dated now but massive and bright, so I love it ❤️

I sat down to read this thread after cleaning my entire downstairs! If I'd taken photos beforehand then they'd easily be the messiest rooms on this thread. Last yesterdays dinner plates AND lunch plates were still on our living room coffee table not to mention plenty of empty soft drink cans and crisps/nuts/chocolate wrappers on the couch (breastfeeding snacks). The usual toy mess and cushions flung across the floor.

I have a toddler and a 3 week old who spends half the day feeding and sleeping on top of me, plus I'm only getting 4-5 hours sleep at night so I'm constantly tired and cleaning is low on the priority list right now. There's a small chance of visitors today so I had to make the effort. No doubt the place will be a tip again by tomorrow so I might take photos then.

Interesting how many of us have gone for that shade of green, I hadn't realised it was so popular.

Was just thinking the same I have it in the front room & dining room.
As I previously said, it’s lovely seeing everyone’s use of colour & how we can be expressive & creative, don’t think anyone is stealth boasting we all live differently & sometimes Instagram could give us the impression that we should all conform what’s on trend & never deviate, I love colour & pattern others love very neutral no pattern etc it’s what’s makes us happy & comfortable imo is the most important.
this is my green front room/dining I spent an hour or so this morning cleaning & tidying after dgd’s visit yesterday am now sitting down with a cup of tea on the sofa.

I don’t know why these posters don’t just start a thread saying please show me your small messy dated kitchen. The op never asked for that. And ro insinuate these perfectly average kitchens and homes are not the norm, or this is some form of boasting thread is ludicrous.

if the poster wants to see small messy and dated kitchens to feel happy with theirs, then they should start a thread asking for those images.

WhenIsSpringg · 23/12/2023 13:45

I now believe all the more those regular Mumsnet threads where so many people seem to be on six figures plus.

I am very happy to see so many people living so well.

My thoughts and prayers to those of us suffering this winter. 💐 xx

haha! Exactly. I love seeing people's houses, all kinds, it's nice to see people's different tastes and colour schemes. I like all the kitchens in this thread - it would be very boring if we were all the same.

Sure, some kitchens are bigger than others but none of them have been Mariah Carey level so I really don't know what that poster is on about- they all seem very "normal" kitchens to me. Now I'm wondering what an "abnormal" kitchen would look like 😂

forgotmyusername1 · 23/12/2023 13:56

With your kitchen op sage is in right now but sage and white. Maybe you could modernise it without spending too much

Definitelylivedin · 23/12/2023 14:03

I'm really enjoying this thread. I don't think people are boasting at all and I think it's great to see all kinds of levels of modernity and cleanliness. I'm impressed by people who manage to keep their houses clean and tidy.

Here's my living room (kitchen is up thread). We do not have a six figure salary but do live in a large rural house (with an air fryer!)

Love all the colour @Definitelylivedin. What a pretty room.
