Fed up with the Instagram showing perfect homes, when the real world is much messier..: so show me your normal homes… here’s my messy (and a bit dated) kitchen

I love my sitting room. Not such a fan of the kitchen - it had been recently done when we bought the flat and it would have been a waste of money to redo it, but it isn't to my taste. We're hoping to move again in the next year or two so can't be bothered to do anything to it now, either.

I love your Art Deco furniture.

Loving this thread

Interesting how many of us have gone for that shade of green, I hadn't realised it was so popular.

some really lovely homely kitchens on this thread, love seeing comfortable lived in rooms that are cosy & welcoming.
this is mine probably a bit twee for many, it makes me happy I am quite naturally tidy & my children are grown up, so a lot easier keep on top of cleaning/tidying.

My favourite so far xx

Ironlights · 23/12/2023 11:22

I love this thread too, mine is always messy, every Christmas I vow to be perfectly organised and immaculately presented to the world but it never quite happens like that

Peasand · 23/12/2023 11:28

I think I prefer the realistic lived in homes to the clinical insta ones

Dizzy1994 · 23/12/2023 11:38

Loving pretty much every single home on here!!
Can't get over how unique most of them are and honestly feel a little jealous. I hate clinical aesthetics and we have just moved into our first proper home and I cannot for the life of me make it look all lovely and eclectic and homely like those on here. If i add colour it looks random and awful. Yet every home I have seen on here looks beautiful

MissyB1 · 23/12/2023 11:42

My kitchen. Very messy right now as it’s Ds birthday and I’m making the icing for his cake.

I had high hopes for this thread and seeing some real pictures of small kitchens with dated worktops and mess, but this being MN some people have turned it into a 'look at my new rennovation' 'aren't I so middle class' thread. It's a shame. It was a chance for normal people to feel happy with what they have and not have a skewed idea of what a normal house is, and get away from the insta gloatfest, but as usual some people can't resist a stealth boast. I suppose the OP asked for normal homes and it is subjective, so in your circle of friends these might be the 'normal' and not so nice homes.

Maybe next time we should ask for shit, tiny homes instead. I bet we still get pictures of huge lounges with grand pianos and enough seating for 20 people and comments saying 'we've just outgrown this house now, so hoping to upsize'. 😂

My home was 127k in 2008 and probably the same price if I sold it now
Definitely not middle class or boasting! I earn min wage and it's what I could afford

cloudydays2 · 23/12/2023 11:46

I won’t lie I try to have a somewhat insta home but here it is with a toddlers homely touch! Including said toddler ready to add her lunch to the floor also.

I have posted a few photos, and will add another couple because I love my home. It is absolutely not showing off. It is dated..the kitchen is MDF made by the builder who did our renovations 24 years ago as a cheap temporary job but is still there. It's cluttered as you can see. The working area is very small but that forces me to be somewhat organised. Sure I get envy of the wonderful new kitchens but that's life. They'll be dated in 10 years too.

Ours was replaced last year. It was 23 years old and well past its best. You’ve just stopped me from posting a picture of my kitchen as apparently just showing it’s a “stealth boast”.

What a stunning fireplace, so cosy. It's really lovely 💗

OP is probably well intentioned so not wanting to shame them for the post. But please everyone stop sharing the inside of your houses on the internet. Seriously not safe. No matter how anonymous you think this might be, you can never be sure what happens to data in the future. Once it’s out there it’s there forever.

Agreed

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 23/12/2023 12:00

My living room is mostly tidy but one corner lowers the standards by having every toy known to man stuffed in it 😬🤣😆

Hopefully it won't be so bad when I've potty trained youngest and the nappies etc are gone.

Beautiful home but I'd probably try and blur out your little one's face, as gorgeous as they are. ❤️💗

Same. Ours was renovated a few years ago after saving up for 10 years to pay for it as it was literally falling to pieces. But apparently, that's "stealth boasting" so I won't bother. Yes, saving for 10 years to replace a kitchen that was on its last legs is "boasting" apparently 🙄good grief

AngelaRippingMyLegIntheAir · 23/12/2023 12:04

@dontcallmelen although I love a minimal style I love yours! It's lovely.

You didn’t read Midgefragnets’ post then? She literally told us that.

MidgeFragnets certainly did- unless your kitchen is small and shit its boasting apparently! I don't know why people assume that if someone has a nice kitchen it automatically means they are bragging about it - its not like people have a brand new kitchen every year, its usually something people have planned/saved for and nothing wrong with that at all.

wordout · 23/12/2023 12:12

This is my kitchen and a separate photo of the dining room. There are only two of us living here, both retired, both pretty organised. So it's always like this. Wasn't when the kids were young and the dogs were alive though.

@BIossomtoes I grew up in a house with a sitting room very much like yours - you've brought back some lovely memories!
