Sisters nicknames for DD

Sister has called DD “meatloaf” since she was a few months old. They have a very close relationship and DD absolutely adores her. Sister kindly does a lot of our childcare too (by choice, I’ve never asked her to).

Anyway I asked her to stop calling her meatloaf and the numerous variations of it (meat, meaty, bread loaf, dominoes, nut loaf etc etc) after a bit because it wasn’t exactly a compliment but DD was so upset that her auntie had stopped calling her “their” special names that it ended up carrying on.

Now DD started school in September and sister kindly picks her up for me 4 days a week. Last week a teacher took me aside at home time and asked if I was aware of the names my sister calls DD. I said I was and that I didn’t like it but DD gets upset when she stops. Teacher replied “ok, as long as you’re aware”. With a face on.

Now I feel awful like I’m allowing my DD to be called mean names but DD likes them!!

WIBU to put a stop to it knowing that DD will be upset?

ps. name change as very outing to anyone that knows us!

I also see no difference with Sausage. Our kids are our Sausages (and when being silly, they are Silly Sausages).

So very odd for the teacher to say something.

I had a chuckle the other day when we were at a stay and play. I like to use Munchkin as a nickname for both kids but I always say it in a sing song tone "How's my little munchkin" etc. But I heard this mum the other day address her daughter as Munchkin like it was her name lol, in a serious tone. "Munchkin, come here."

DS2, (4) for reasons unknown (even to him I think) started calling MIL 'Gloria' a few weeks ago. The other two DC picked it up and now they all call her 'Gloria' - she seems to like it. Her real name is much more prim and proper. Gloria sounds like she might work in The Queen Vic.
I heard DS1 (9 tomorrow) saying he thought 'Charlie' would suit FIL. So far he hasn't used it. I'm not sure what any if it is about
DH and I call them Florrie and Fred (affectionately) when it's just us.

Just1MoreMinute · 27/12/2023 15:18

The number of names we came our son, he’d be institutionalised if he took them seriously….sausage, banana, puppy, boy, little lentil, bear, duck, pancake…..

I’d ask your sister to not use the names at your DD’s school. If the teacher heard then your DD’s classmates probably heard it too. ‘Meatloaf’ or ‘nutloaf’ are cute as family nicknames but your DD probably doesn’t want random children at school to call her that.

Im not sure i agree. If you have been called meatloaf all your life and similar variations, if some idiot in the playground ever calls the little girl 'meaty', it could reasonably be water of a ducks back even if it was meant nastily. If she had only been called princess before then maybe meaty would be more of a shock.

Suunnyd · 27/12/2023 15:21

I say this as someone who has an easily rhymable name but I had them all from siblings and parents so when kids at school did it, i never gave it a second thought, i just laughed.

WonderingWanda · 27/12/2023 15:25

I don't see anything wrong with it unless with the meaty term your sis is implying that dd is big or chunky. People use nugget or pumpkin as a as a nick name and they are both foods.

Lifeomars · 27/12/2023 15:28

It sounds as if they have a really strong bond and "get" each other, that is invaluable.

Vistada · 27/12/2023 15:28

I don't buy this. I just can't ever imagine teachers passing comment on something like this.

It just feels very convenient that you took umbrage with it first, got nowhere and now the teacher is of the same mindset.

Wouldn't surprise me if you're floating the story here first to assess its plausibility before taking it to DSis to get your own way - without jeapordising the four days a week pick up

Which, btw, isn't just kind, its gamechanging.

WobbliHead3000 · 27/12/2023 15:37

Much better than mine. My aunt affectionately named me ‘fatty boom boom’ when I was 1…. I’m now 32 with 2 of my own children and she still calls me by that name 🤣

Sssssssxox · 27/12/2023 15:38

Could be worse my sisters name is isabella she never gets called it normally its smell bum poo bum if we're felling nice bell bum this started when she was about 3 she is now 16 and doesn't actually answer unless you call bum in the middle of primark its great the looks you get she wouldn't have it any other way the joys of having older siblings lol

Butchyrestingface · 27/12/2023 15:43

Teacher would have died on the spot if I'd been her pupil. I variously remember being called:

  • wee pudding
  • humpshie tumshie
  • baw jaws
  • teeny
SamPoodle123 · 27/12/2023 15:44

If your dd likes the nick names....then let it be! Our nick names are not any better for our dc....when they were in my tummy - bean, pea and pumpkin. And out they have had many strange names - Crankuna, Stinky linky (when they wont take a bath after days...and no they dont smell). Anyways the weird names list can go on and on.

My DS is called squid because as a wet, leggy baby in the bath that's what he looked like. Then it turned out he was very good at swimming and it stuck forever. He would also think I was cross with him if I called him his real name.

I also have a squid!!! Because he was such a wriggly baby. Variations include Squidsie, Squiddanought, squidopher, squiddarama...

OP you and your daughter sound very lucky to have your wonderful sister. Meatloaf in all its variants is adorable.

LinnieM · 27/12/2023 15:57

That’s so weird of the teacher to mention it. You’d think your sister’s calling her a fat cunt behind your back, how dramatic.

I really like personal nicknames. It’s much better than ‘I’m gonna name my daughter Isabelle so everyone can call her Belle.’ Planned nicknames are the worst. It’s nice that DD likes her nickname too. Let it carry on, really no harm done

Susuwatariandkodama · 27/12/2023 16:01

I think it’s odd the teacher mentioned it, non of those nicknames are bad or offensive, I think they are all adorable nicknames!

Verv · 27/12/2023 16:03

Meatloaf is an ace nickname and your DD seems to really appreciate the bond between her and your sister as it's clearly very affectionate.
Teacher needs to wind neck in.

CleansUpButWouldPreferNotTo · 27/12/2023 16:06

We were banned on pain of Child Furiousness from using our baby nicknames for Dc once they were about 6 or 7

😂😂😂 Fair enough!

Howbizzare22 · 27/12/2023 16:08

From what I gather its specifically the word ‘nutoaf’ the teacher was shocked by as in “Nutter/nuts/nut job” which generally implies someone is mentally unwell or “bonkers”. Teacher just checking with you as can be seen as derogatory! I get that tbf.

PartOfTheFurniture12 · 27/12/2023 16:11

I'm afraid your response was bitterly disappointing. What you should have said was:

"Yeah, my sister calls her that. I asked her to stop once. She told me she'd do anything for love..." Maintain eye contact. "...But she won't do that."

Guavafish1 · 27/12/2023 16:13

it's only a nickname

now like a real name.. coco, cookie,

KingsleyBorder · 27/12/2023 16:14

Deleted as I was too late to the punchline! 😂😂 @PartOfTheFurniture12 !

educatingrati · 27/12/2023 16:25

Meatloaf is a cool nickname. But need to know how it came about!

ReallyAgainReally · 27/12/2023 16:28

oh dear! it gets worse.....

NancyJoan · 27/12/2023 16:31

flowerchild2000 · 20/12/2023 14:23

I hope some version of Meatloaf sticks, it's just so adorable. I know a full grown man whom everyone calls 'Binky'. It's had to have been about 40 years since he used a pacifier. I don't even know his real name. My DD13 calls DD1 'Goofy' which has now turned into just 'Goof'. I did want to say something about that but I held it in.

I was at school with a Goofy/Goof (real name Ruth). We’re almost 50, but she’s still in my phone as Goofy Surname.

feelingalittlehorse · 27/12/2023 16:46

I’m really sorry OP, but when I opened the thread on child nicknames - I wasn’t expecting to read “Meatloaf” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Honestly, I actually think it’s really cute. I’d leave it be, it’s nice that they have such a close relationship.
