Trans women do not have periods.

zaazaazoo · 19/12/2023 18:12

According to period pants maker Modibodi, transwomen can have 'periods'. Periods which are just as valid apparently.

Whilst I'm not going to suggest I know what hormone treatment tied to a trans woman, I can confidently say that no, they don't have periods. Periods involve blood. Trans women don't bleed.

Modibodi seem to acknowledge that there is no bleeding involved I transwomen's 'periods' but bizarrely under a section on how to manage their periods, trans women should wear period pants. For the life of all God's WHY???! Wtf would wear period pants if they didn't have to?

I think people are clicking on the modibody website - seeing comments about period knickers being for menstruation - seeing a transman who might still be menstruating and not seeing what the issue is.

Neither of these things are the issue in my opinion - it’s this article saying menstruation is the shedding of the womb but also saying transwomen have periods and need to buy period knickers and that “Transwomen’s periods are just as real and valid as anyone else’s…”

This has been copied from the modibody website.

”Yes, anyone can get their period, trans women includedMenstruation, often referred to as a period, is a part of many people’s lives. Defined as the periodic discharge of blood and tissue from the uterus, menstruation is just one stage of the larger menstrual cycle, which typically takes place over 28 days.
Can a transgender woman have a period? Absolutely. Many trans and gender-diverse people menstruate. Whether you’re a woman, a man, non-binary or agender, your body may menstruate too.
This article explores the different ways trans women get their period and provides some tips on navigating your cycle.”
“Tips for navigating your period as a trans womanHere are some top tips for managing your period as a trans woman:

  • Track your hormonal cycle: Use a tracker app like Clue to keep tabs on your cycle and any related symptoms. This is a quick and easy way to feel more prepared and in control.
  • Wear period underwear: By offering a sense of comfort, freedom and security, period underwear can help you feel comfortable, affirmed and empowered throughout your cycle. Check out our Women’s briefs and All Gender collection.

and

”How to support trans women during their periodBeing a good ally to trans women during their period means being respectful, understanding and supportive. Here are some key ways to be there for them:

EDITED BECAUSE I WAS WRONG! You can all ignore the below, since I’ve now seen the full thread and trans women explanation. Which I agree is batshit! Leaving my origianl post below as my penance, but you needn’t bother correcting me.

You’re clutching at pearls here @zaazaazoo
The website clearly states that they’re for people of all genders “who menstruate”.

ie women and trans men. Not trans women.

I’m certainly no trans activist, but this is Daily Mail level reading comprehension fail on your part. There is plenty to get het up about in the current gender debate, but this is absolutely not one of them. You have wholly and monumentally misunderstood - because you wanted to misunderstand on order to get angry about something.

Trans men can have periods.

MrsTwatInAHat · 19/12/2023 20:35

Transwomen have periods in the same way that transwomen are women - by extending the definition of a word so as to include things it isn’t, to the point of it meaning nothing.

Just like me saying I’m a dog because the definition of dog also includes humans if they say they’re a dog. Meaningless.

However period product companies can both virtue-signal and advertise to the validation and fetishist market by saying this, so they do.

BrutusMcDogface · 19/12/2023 20:36

Sorry. I didn’t realise there were so many pages.

Having read the article, though, I still don’t see the big deal. Period pants are obviously completely superfluous but if trans women have hormonal swings/cycles etc and want to call it a period, then so be it.

They’re for trans men. So people who menstruate. Lots of people should be feeling very embarrassed by the histrionics aimed towards modibodi for this. 🙄

People who should actually feel "embarrassed" are those who haven't read the whole website, which DOES refer to "transwomen" (in speech marks because I'm quoting) having periods.

Notjustabrunette · 19/12/2023 20:36

I know a couple of trans women. There is no way they would buy period pants! They would honestly think this is absolutely ludicrous. I think this is not about what trans women want and more about the marketing department. Fail.

Actually sorry I think you have missed the point - you need to read this modibody article which is saying transwomen have periods which are just as real and valid as everyone else’s. Yes modi body are validly targeting transmen but they are also targeting transwomen and encouraging them to buy period pants.

Yes, exactly.

It's fair to be exasperated at people not reading the full thread, but (just my opinion obv.) the etiquette to not comment until you've at least read all OP posts only really applies to threads about an OP's personal situation, because if someone starts a thread about something they're personally going through, that situation is likely going to change with time, and they may easily have made an update with info that completely changed the thread.

Threads about trans issues do tend to become echo chambers (I don't mean that in a bad way), so I don't think posters should be blamed for not wanting to read through 9 pages, and for assuming the OP's problem was with the page linked on page 1.

If the OP had included the blog link in the opening post then I think this thread would have gone very differently.

BananaPyjamaLlama · 19/12/2023 20:38

Oooops sorry - I can see now that Im not the first with the particularly stupid "trans women and their periods article"

You don't see a problem with a period product company gaslighting women and encouraging them to 'be kind' to males who fetishise periods?

Crack on then, but many women think it's gaslighting nonsense and won't shop with a company that treats us like that.

Here's what else Essity do:

On top of Modibodi, Essity own the following UK-marketed brands:

  • Cushelle
  • Velvet
  • Plenty
  • Tempo
  • TENA
  • Tork

I won't be buying Cushelle again, then. Non-recycled toilet tissue should only be coming from plantings expressly cultivated for the purpose of harvesting for paper. It's obscene to use centuries old forest for it.

That article is the biggest load of politically correct bilge I have ever read.

TLDR version: trans women can feel bloated and uncomfortable due to the artificial hormones they ingest. To be “inclusive”, we will call this feeling a “period” even though there is no blood, and the transwomen can play dress up by wearing period pants and thereby increasing our paying customer base.

i take your point but i don’t think that it just counts in a personal situation. The op may have changed their minds about this subject and apologised but no one would have read that post

plus its not the disagreeing i have an issue with, its those calling everyone hysterical or with daily mail levels of comprehension 😀
