Trans women do not have periods.

According to period pants maker Modibodi, transwomen can have 'periods'. Periods which are just as valid apparently.

Whilst I'm not going to suggest I know what hormone treatment tied to a trans woman, I can confidently say that no, they don't have periods. Periods involve blood. Trans women don't bleed.

Modibodi seem to acknowledge that there is no bleeding involved I transwomen's 'periods' but bizarrely under a section on how to manage their periods, trans women should wear period pants. For the life of all God's WHY???! Wtf would wear period pants if they didn't have to?

But it is fair to point out that the poster saying that some of the models are "actual men" is incorrect. The model in question is transmale, so would potentially have need of menstrual products.

I haven't looked at every single product (all the products are modelled on 3-4 different models, but you have to click every product individually to see all the various models) so please do correct me if I'm wrong, but are there any natal male models on the website?

Fionaville · 19/12/2023 20:11

I'll be buying some period pants for my DD soon. I won't be buying from there!

2mummies1baby · 19/12/2023 20:12

I apologise for my previous post- I had only looked at the original link the OP posted, not the second one. I agree it's a very cynical attempt from the company to sell their product to people who really don't need it.

whereaw · 19/12/2023 20:13

What utter rubbish! Do any biological women feel validated by their periods? I think that is a sign you are indeed NOT a real woman!

whatchagonnado · 19/12/2023 20:13

Makes me Angry. I will never buy from Modibodi
They can keep their transwomen fetish gear to themselves

MurielThrockmorton · 19/12/2023 20:14

I don't see women who've had hysterectomies for health reasons and are on HRT being persuaded that they still have periods, I wonder why it only seems to apply to men....

Here's what else Essity do:

On top of Modibodi, Essity own the following UK-marketed brands:

  • Cushelle
  • Velvet
  • Plenty
  • Tempo
  • TENA
  • Tork

None of us should be giving Modibodi our custom.

Twizzletoe · 19/12/2023 20:17

@2mummies1baby
Taken from the blog entry on the Modibodi website:

Many trans women have periods. Some trans women don’t have uteruses, so they won’t bleed as part of a monthly menstrual cycle. But the hormonal experience of menstruation can still be very real.

Symptoms due to hormone level variation maybe. Bleeding definitely not so not a period as any women understands it. Don’t think that there have been any uterine transplants into women anywhere in the world so WTF?!

I love my Modibodi pants great for night time but I will not be buying any more if they need replacing before my much awaited end of periods. Environmentally can’t bring myself to just throw them away

I've just noticed that if you go to their site and click on blog, the main headline for the blog is "BODIES | Women's Periods - Blogs & Articles."

Surely suggesting that only women have periods is transphobic and denying transmen?!

(Honestly I think some of these companies are desperate to pay lip service to being woke but without any real thought or consistency.)

CatMadam · 19/12/2023 19:22

… basically every reply in the thread is blatant transphobia. There is really no denying that.

The link describes the hormone changes trans woman go through which sound similar to those cis women have during periods. I know I had a week where i felt very ‘period-y’ without bleeding when I had the contraceptive implant. But I believe in being kind to trans women in general :)

They don't go through "hormonal changes similar" to what women go through, though- they take oestrogen consistently and do not have a "cycle" as women who menstruate do.

Any apparent side-effects they manifest are because their bodies are not meant to take additional oestrogen. They do NOT have periods or anything like periods.

Those claiming that they do are deluding themselves.

Also reducing us to being 'bodies'. FFS.

I am getting really tired of that photo of the gurning blue-haired TW! However I am really heartened by reading posts from women who started at "be kind" and moved swiftly to "this is ridiculous " after actually reading the website in question.

What utter rubbish! Do any biological women feel validated by their periods? I think that is a sign you are indeed NOT a real woman!

I’ve seen a few clips where the way they talk about periods is just completely foreign to me. No women says “my period is valid” or gets all excited about buying tampons or films themself prancing around with supposed cramps. It’s bizarre play acting.

Also the same people who will go mad at a white woman making sushi as cultural appropriation don’t have any issues with males acting like complete idiots and whaling that they have their period?

VickyEadieofThigh · 19/12/2023 20:24

2mummies1baby · 19/12/2023 20:06

Please, please stop sharing false information, OP. The pants are aimed at transmen, many of whom do still have periods, not trans women, none of whom have periods.

Have another look at the website. It DOES refer to males who identify as women.

JWhipple · 19/12/2023 20:24

Aren't these for transmen? As in people described as female at birth? So they would menstruate. And may want to have a more masculine style.of underwear.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 19/12/2023 20:25

@JWhipple look at links further up they say some transwomen have periods

Ohchristmastree23 · 19/12/2023 20:26

Wow. I think some people need to go to science lessons! Transwomen cannot menstruate/have a period. Fact. The hormonal cycle that occurs monthly is different to 'mentruation' which is the physical breakdown of the uterus lining. Even my year 7 class know that. It's basic biology.
These transwomen are wanting attention or people to feel sorry for them when they have mild hormonal symptoms such as mood swings, appetite changes or tiredness. They don't have to put up with the crippling cramps or stabbing ovulation pain that affects millions of women around the world. And wearing period underwear for affirmations or comfort is just batshit. No actual woman would wear them if they didn't need to!
Thanks for reminding me never go buy from modibodi!

They’re for trans men. So people who menstruate. Lots of people should be feeling very embarrassed by the histrionics aimed towards modibodi for this. 🙄

AppleChristsBirthdayMacchiato · 19/12/2023 20:27

To be fair posters throughout this thread have conflated two different things:

The "All Gender" product page linked on page 1 which features a transmale model (who at least one poster wrongly believed was a natal male).

The blog entry "Tips for navigating your period as a trans woman" which was not linked till later on in the thread.

I don't think posters are necessarily wrong for getting the two confused, since some people are offended by the use of "all-gender." But yes, the site does very explicitly refer to side effects of artificial hormones given to transwomen as being "periods" which is obviously not okay.
