Asking for half of parking ticket

ellie09 · 19/12/2023 11:31

So, messy night out.

Ended up going home accidentally with someone else's coat. Everyone was drunk may I add.

Their wallet, keys etc were in the coat and said person had parked their car in the town that night then was planning to get the car in the morning.

I got coat to them by 12.

Message today to say they got a parking ticket. Asked me to pay half the ticket.

I have paid half as didnt want to get in an argument.

AIBU to think its a little bit cheeky considering it wasnt my decision for them to park their car there or is the other person reasonable for asking?

So you took their coat home? As in, you caused the issue of them not being able to move their car in time?

You are lucky they've only asked for half the fine!

meeplesmarples · 19/12/2023 11:33

Did they get a parking ticket because you took their coat and keys, preventing them from collecting their car as they'd planned?

Catza · 19/12/2023 11:34

Absolutely reasonable for them to ask seeing that you went home with their keys and didn't get it to them in time to collect the car. Why would you think otherwise?

That's what it says in the OP

I got coat to them by 12

Thingsthatgo · 19/12/2023 11:35

I would've offers to pay for all of the ticket and been pretty embarrassed about it too. I call reverse.

Whaleandsnail6 · 19/12/2023 11:35

I think its caused by your mistake in taking the wrong coat so I think they were reasonable in asking for half.

PhulNana · 19/12/2023 11:36

If 'everyone' was drunk, you saved them from potentially being breathalysed and banned, or at least prevented some drunk driving. Would you pay that fine because you didn't take their coat? Tell them to take a running jump.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 19/12/2023 11:36

If the parking ticket was from last night and they would have got it anyway then yanbu. If the parking ticket started this morning, after the time they were planning to pick it up, then it's entirely your fault and you should have paid all of it

Spirallingdownwards · 19/12/2023 11:36

They couldn't move their car because you drank so much you took their coat (and keys). You should pay the whole amount.

crumblingschools · 19/12/2023 11:37

What time did they need to get to the car?

NuffSaidSam · 19/12/2023 11:37

They are very reasonable in asking for half. I think they could have asked for all of it really.

When did you let them know that you had the coat? And when did they get the ticket? If you got the coat back to them at 12 and they didn't move the car until 6pm and got a ticket at 4pm then that's different.

Mumof2teens79 · 19/12/2023 11:38

Who picked up the coat first? Did you take theirs while they were still there? Or did they leave their coat? I am guessing not as had wallet in it??

If so you are at fault....and despite everyone being drunk maybe you were more so?

When did they notice? And first try and locate it? And how quickly did you respond.

Sounds like you were late getting it to them tbh

pinkspeakers · 19/12/2023 11:39

As most other people have said, depends on whether they got the fine in the morning, when they might have moved the car if they had the keys, or during the night. If the former, you should pay the whole lot!

If the latter, you probably shouldn't have to pay any, but given it was probably still quite annoying for them that you took their stuff I might not quibble!

SadKenny · 19/12/2023 11:39

If you effectively stole their coat with their keys in it I think you should have paid the full ticket.

PhulNana · 19/12/2023 11:39

If they were drunk at the time you took the coat, they shouldn't have been driving anyway. Tough titty for taking a car on a drinking jolly.

OP specifically stated the owner had planned on picking the car up the next morning, just in time to avoid charges.* *

It says they were leaving the car parked till next morning. I assume the ticket is because they went over the max time or something.
There is no suggestion they were drink driving.

Butchyrestingface · 19/12/2023 11:43

Based on the information you've given, I think you should have offered to pay the parking ticket in full.

ellie09 · 19/12/2023 11:45

Thanks all

You're right. I paid them the full amount and let them know to have a lovely Christmas.

I gave them the benefit of the doubt also, as I havent seen the parking ticket.

You said you pay HALF in your OP.

I transferred them the other half a couple of minutes ago and let them know that I just paid it in full as on reflection its my fault.

Well done OP.

You caused a whole load of hassle, resulting in them getting a fine and not being able to access their car or wallet for half a day but you are graciously "giving them the benefit of the doubt"?

Hilarious.

Hilarious.

The boss had offered to pay for everybody's taxis so nobody was in a position where they would need to bring a car and leave it etc.

I had also paid for 2x rounds of drinks for them that night but I hadn't received any (the drinks came to around £20 so would have been about half the fine anyhow)

Update

Thanks everyone, on further reflection I can see the hassle it can cause someone and if it was me I would have been pretty pissed off.

I sent the FULL amount (sent the other half after sending the first half) and let them know I have sent them the full amount to pay as it was my fault 100% that the mistake was made and I didnt want them to be out of pocket based on my error.

It was a bit annoying to me that there wasnt really a need for the car to be there anyhow (boss offered to pay everyone's taxis) and that I had spent money on a couple rounds drinks that night that weren't reciprocated but lessons learned about not getting so drunk you take the wrong coat in the future!

I also dont want any hostile or damaged work relationships so its a small price to pay.
