To ask who pays?

Two sisters

S1 23, works in a apprenticeship role, lives at home contributes a small amount to bills

S2 21, at uni had a part time min wage job, gets a small amount from parents

S1 had some Xmas presents in a bag near her door. S2 opened her door (aggressively in s1 opinion) knocked the bag, broke a £10 cup.

S1 feels S2 should replace as it's her fault

S2 feels S1 shouldn't have left a bag near her door

Who pays?

Why on earth would S2 not?

All the jobs and occupation stuff is irrelevant

Careerdecisions · 19/12/2023 09:16

It was an accident, £5 each to replace the mug.

SutWytTi · 19/12/2023 09:16

The person who broke something pays, usually.

Seems a real shame there is potentially a disagreement over this small matter.

MermaidEyes · 19/12/2023 09:17

The door must have been opened fairly aggressively for the mug to break inside a bag. Sister 2 should pay.

ShortColdandGrey · 19/12/2023 09:18

S2 needs to pay tp replace the cup and say sorry. Why is S1 contributing to the household bills but S2 isn't from her job? Is S2 golden child?

ConflictedCheetah · 19/12/2023 09:18

Maybe they should split it. It was clearly accidental from S2 and S1 shouldn't leave stuff in a place where it's blocking a door and can be broken that easily. Sounds like it was left in a stupid place so S1 is fairly at fault. No way S2 could have known it was there

Brefugee · 19/12/2023 09:18

breaker pays and leaver of bag in silly places learns not to do it in future.

Tohaveandtohold · 19/12/2023 09:21

It’s her bedroom door, her fault for opening the door aggressively rather than knocking first and allowing S1 to take the bag out of the way first. Their financial situation is not relevant as S2 should pay. If she has no money then she can go and ask their parents.

itsgettingweird · 19/12/2023 09:23

The person who opened another's door and broke their possessions pays.

This is like settling an argument between my three 4yr olds

Bloody hell, hats off to you triplet Mom, from a tired twin Mom. Also just turned 4. If one of them duplicated overnight I'd move out.

KnowThyself · 19/12/2023 09:33

The person that broke the cup should pay regardless of income.

There is no indication of disposable income amounts of each sister and even if there was it’s irrelevant.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/12/2023 09:34

Sorry yes, assuming it was in her room and not a trio hazard / b hind the front door so destined to get whacked with a door, then breaker pays.

Op tell your sister she broke it, she pays or take it out any money you'd have spent on her.

cpphelp · 19/12/2023 09:34

@Devilsmommy I honestly am so monotone with them now! My twins have just turned four, and my older one is 5 on 29th... the twins were early!

KombuchaKalling · 19/12/2023 09:36

S2 and she needs to be more careful. Jobs etc are immaterial

Devilsmommy · 19/12/2023 09:36

@cpphelp you must be some kind of superhero 😁

ActDottie · 19/12/2023 09:37

If it was her bedroom then she can leave things where she wants. I wouldn’t expect a sibling to come into my room unannounced.

The breaker should pay.

LubaLuca · 19/12/2023 09:38

S2 owes S1 a mug.

Tinkerbyebye · 19/12/2023 09:39

Split it and both grow up

Edited

I assume S2 lives away for uni and is paying her own rent and bills.

starfishmummy · 19/12/2023 09:41

I don't knkw whuch sister you are, but time to grow up and settle your arguments like adults

Purplecatshopaholic · 19/12/2023 09:43

S2, no question.

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 19/12/2023 09:44

The person that did the damage obvs. This isn’t a hard one!

Shakeylegs · 19/12/2023 09:52

Surely the one who broke it makes a fake offer to pay, the other one goes ‘Oh no, don’t worry!’ whilst actually seething and really wanting her to pay, and then it gets forgotten about?
