Really important post. Vital. Life depends on it. I know, my choice and all but tacky as hell or unbelievably cute?

Fine if your kids like it or they're too young to know. Not fine if you have to persuade them or make them.

Fucking he'll lighten up.

I dress my children in vaguely matching clothes; same style of trousers in differing colours, same t shirts but different colours, exactly the same coats, similar jumpers etc because it's really hard to find clothes I like for them, doubly hard to find two sets of completely different clothes.

Plus, it's cute,

Don’t try and cancel or invalidate her just because you like to do it.

WendyDee · 18/12/2023 21:13

My girls (17 month age difference) wore matching clothes a lot of the time until they were about 6. I think its cute. Much easier to spot them in busy play areas. Also it was tricky shopping, seeing a "lovely dress" and then having to find another "nearly as nice dress", and then having to decide which daughter only got the "nearly as nice dress"! They are older now but still sometimes chose to get the same things and they love their matching Christmas PJs.

schoolallergies · 18/12/2023 21:14

'Cancel or invalidate' 😂😂😂

My children are 5 and 1 so they couldn't give a flying care

KirstenBlest · 18/12/2023 21:15

The matching family pyjamas seem very popular

Exactly, it's hard finding clothes that I love. I don't want one child getting T Shirt B

shams05 · 18/12/2023 21:16

I think if your kids are happy wearing the same then it's fine but not always. My youngest wants to wear exactly the same as the 7 year old, not possible all the time but to Avery any tantrums I'll try atleast to put them in similar.
If we are going out to somewhere crowdy I'll put them both in the same outfit so as to keep an eye on them easier, like to the beach or on a day out, Just so I'm not trying to remember what they're each wearing.
Soon the 7 year old will probably start stating her dislike at wearing the same so I'll stop

Carebearstartrek · 18/12/2023 21:16

Agree, please no.

MrsEG · 18/12/2023 21:20

As a twin parent I’ve always been the exact opposite and tried to dress them differently to foster that individuality but it’s bitten me on the arse as at almost 4 they now always want exactly what the other has. I also frequently begrudge the fact I don’t have a big bag of hand me downs in the loft because my kids were rude enough to be born 3 minutes apart 🤣

In all seriousness OP do whatever you like! But take heed - double the same outfits gets expensive very fast!!

CapturedLeprechaun · 18/12/2023 21:20

My kids (5,7&9) specifically REQUEST it! They love matching clothes, and even more so if I'm matching too.

They had Christmas jumper day at school and the smallest refused to wear hers unless I also had my matching one on.

So we have 2 x matching Christmas jumpers, matching Christmas pyjamas, and everyone has some form of tartan to wear on Christmas Day! I shall continue to do it for as long as my kids are happy to, I won't force them if they express that they don't want to do it.

Could care less what the rest of you think, we look freaking adorable 😂

Twixandtinsel · 18/12/2023 21:21

Tacky as fuck

RickWhittington · 18/12/2023 21:23

They kind of are my accessories Blush

In all seriousness for a moment though, their individuality? Yes, 3 year old has some interests which is reflected in clothing to an extent but a baby? How do you know what their interests will be? And it surely won’t adversely impact the three year old if he wears a top with a badger on it rather than endless fire engines?

TigerOnTour · 18/12/2023 21:24

@RickWhittington it's fine at that age. If they were 10 and 13 it's not ok.

Ormside · 18/12/2023 20:05

Awful, especially on twins. DH's niece spouts some bull about fostering sisterhood when she forces her DDs to dress alike, they're 5 and 13! It looks ridiculous. We have several sets of multiples in our family and fortunately their DMs have taste, encouraging their DC's individuality.

Yes, agree. Especially awful on twins. We were on holiday with some friends of friends, it rained and they needed raincoats as had not brought any...there was a shop that sold coats and there were some great ones but the mum turned down any that weren't exactly the same. I mean, preference is one thing (I guess) but to say they HAVE to be matching is truly weird

FluffytheGoldfish · 18/12/2023 21:28

My DM used to buy my 2 Dds the same tee shirts, hoddies and jackets. (She had my Dds 3 days a week till they started school)
When I asked her why, she said that it was so that if she lost one on a day out she could point at the other and say the missing one is dressed like this. Also it was easier for her to spot two dressed the same when at soft play etc.

Constellationstation · 18/12/2023 21:28

Tacky. I like cute but I don’t even understand how it’s supposed to be cute

User0311 · 18/12/2023 21:28

Depends on children's age I would say

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 18/12/2023 21:31

It’s mega cute when my two match - they’re 9 and 3 - and they both like matching. It only happens occasionally for a specific event or a day out somewhere with a theme. It also helps to be able to say ‘she’s dressed like this’ if one goes missing.

My DM used to dress my sister and I the same and it only started to bother us as we got to our teens. No lasting damage though and we still dress similarly now and not always deliberately.

kkneat · 18/12/2023 21:32

very tacky and unnecessary sorry

Badbearday · 18/12/2023 21:35

I tend to dress in the same colours if we’re going somewhere busy for the day.

So if I’m looking for them on a busy playground I only need to look for red shorts & a blue T-shirt. Don’t have to completely match though

Echobelly · 18/12/2023 21:41

I voted YABU but then thought if it's just for Xmas day or something, that's OK.

I am a bit judgy on people dressing kids identikit - for some reason I see it most often at airports 🤔Nothing beats the woman at the airport I saw once who had dressed her daughters identically to one another and herself. 😬

GreenSmithing · 18/12/2023 21:42

My mum used to do this with my older sister and me, and I hated it. Felt as though I was just there to be my sisters mini-me and not my own person. However, we didn't get new clothes very often and most of mine were hand me downs, so it also meant I'd end up with the same outfit twice a couple of years apart.

If the kids want to, and ask to do it, I think it's different.

KirstenBlest · 18/12/2023 21:42

What Badbeardday said. DC1 & DC2 are close in age but didn't particularly look alike. Much easier to spot them if in matching outfits.
Twins - put them in matching pattens but slightly different shade, not identical outfits

cadburyegg · 18/12/2023 21:48

It's fine if they are very young and don't care. Age 3 and a baby is fine. I have the same age gap with mine and when they were that age I'd buy them the odd matching item. They are 8 and 5 now and I let them wear what they want (within reason obviously) and they'd probably want to wear different things so I wouldn't do it now

cadburyegg · 18/12/2023 21:49

Actually having said that they do both have matching winter coats 😂
