To date, my worst mishap was thinking I'd ordered a pack of mushrooms, and I'd ordered one solitary mushroom. This one little chap arrived with a 4p ticket stuck to his head. At least the delivery man found it funny.

So, today, I logged on to my account, to do the Christmas order that I had secured the slot for several weeks ago. I'd secured it in a hurry, and clicked the first thing I saw that was over £40, with the intention of removing said item when completing the order.

Usually I click a bottle of fizz, but this time, I happened to have clicked a Duchy side of salmon at £46. Which despite being entirely raw and no extra ingredients added, is helpfully classed as "entertaining food to go". And the last date for amending or cancelling this was two days ago.

So now, I am committed to a sodding £46 side of salmon I neither want, nor have time to cook (at least it's raw and can go in the freezer) and can't bloody cancel. Plus the whole Christmas order on top. DH was laughing at the "forced salmon" we're having whether we like it or not. Less of the laughing when I said it was fifty quid.

FFS. Merry Christmas. Xmas Grin

I ordered 5 bananas but it was 5 bunches that turned up. I had about 25 of the buggers.

Ihateslugs · 18/12/2023 03:19

I usually reserve my slot with something I have each week, like bread or bananas rather than something I don’t need. Luckily with Tesco you just need to put one item in the shopping basket to reserve it then add to it later. I used to get a bit anxious about forgetting to complete the order and only getting one thing and paying £5 for pick and pack - need to spend £50 now to get it free. However they now send out text reminders the day before warning you that your order is below the free limit which I find very helpful.

moleeye · 18/12/2023 05:50

Heavily pregnant and had a toddler, while working full time in a demanding job - just to show you where my head was.

Put 2 bottles of gin and 2 vodka to hold the slot. Forgot to go in and amend, that was the full weekly shop.....

flowerchild2000 · 18/12/2023 06:04

I usually get free items thrown in I definitely didn't order, which I never complain about. I got dog treats and a toy one time, don't have a dog but my neighbor's dog was happy to get them. I got a big bottle of grapefruit vodka another time, it was actually pretty good.

CrunchyCarrot · 18/12/2023 06:07

I ordered what I thought was 1 green pepper and ended up with 8 of them! 😂

Namechangedasouting987 · 18/12/2023 06:18

I once got a phone call from Sainsburys saying they were outside and couldn't get a reply. I opened the front door and no one was there. Totally confused. Checked for van up and down street, nothing. Then he described the front door. And it was the holiday house we had been in the week before. And I had ordered the shopping to the wrong house...
I have also managed to update the wrong weeks shop and ended up with 3 boxes of washing powder on my doorstep.
I now save my slots with the previous weeks order. At least that way I will.get stuff I can eat!!!

CasperGutman · 18/12/2023 06:25

Once ordered six six-packs of yoghurts instead of individual pots from Tesco click and collect on holiday. The daft thing was I didn't notice when picking them up and proudly brought thirty-six yoghurts back to a tiny holiday cottage fridge.

At home we use Ocado and in the year we've used them we've never had a single substitution that didn't make perfect sense. They've all been either a different brand of the same item ordered, or e.g. two single items in place of a twin pack.

Oh my god, that just put
Me in a cold sweat, due
My Tescos delivery today and the last place we'd had one was a holiday cottage, just had to quickly log on and check the address was right 😅

Andywarholswig · 18/12/2023 06:30

I’ve done the Christmas shop slot where I’ve ended up with just a bottle of champagne (not terrible) and also misread the description and instead of order 8 bananas ended up with 64.

I realised this year I’d booked my Christmas slot too early (21st) and the food I’d ordered wouldn’t have a sell by date for Christmas Day so I cancelled it and now have to go shopping 🤦‍♀️

Itstime1 · 18/12/2023 06:33

We had just moved house and I thought I had updated the address… I hadn’t. A full shop was being delivered to the old house, we only realised at 8am. Thankfully Amazon/morrisons managed to cancel the order and get it redirected to us 😂

Simonjt · 18/12/2023 06:37

During covid when the shops were empty I had a slot secured with ocado, I used to do this by filling my trolley with an expensive bottle of champagne. The website was so busy I couldn’t change my basket etc, so we essentially had no food in the house, but hey, we had champagne.

Gingernaut · 18/12/2023 06:37

I am usually pretty good about unchecked all the substitution boxes, but when I order something for the first time, I often forget

Usually it's something on special offer and it's often so popular that it's sold out

Sainsbo's shop, special price on Cushelle 9 pack of toilet paper and forgot to unchecked the substitution box

They had sold out of 9 packs of Cushelle, so kept eith the brand, rather than the quantity

32 rolls of toilet paper. I didn't know they sold 32 packs

apintofwine · 18/12/2023 06:47

Why do you uncheck them @Gingernaut ? The majority of the time the substitution makes sense…great. No need to go out to get missing item.
And if it doesn’t make sense you just give if back to the driver and it’s refunded. Really don’t get why people would do this…

A lot of the time the substitutions make no sense, are unwanted or are too expensive.

However, I needed toilet paper, so I kept the 32 rolls

Toomanysquishmallows · 18/12/2023 06:56

Sainsbury’s substituted my son’s birthday cake , with a can of soup!

apintofwine · 18/12/2023 07:00

They refund the difference so you pay the price as the product you originally ordered.

If they make no sense send it back. Surely worth it to get the substitutions that do make sense…

isthismylifenow · 18/12/2023 07:04

Toilet roll here too.

There was an offer of 2 packs for a certain price. Not really focusing very well, I put in the quantity in twos instead of just one to get two packs. So as it was quite a good deal I ordered extra to have a good stash. I thought I had ordered 4, but when the delivery chap got here he kept making trips back to the van to bring in 8 packs 🙈

Then I had to find space to store my mega haul of loo roll.

But when I was visiting UK I went in person to a greengrocer for a few mushrooms. I am used to just picking up a punnets, and working in grams and kilograms, but we also order in money value if getting something weighed out for us. So in I went and he asked me how much do I want. In my fluster I didn't know what to say (as I couldn't see a punnet) and have no idea why I said four pounds. I meant ounces but tbh I had no clue how much that was anyway. So he asked me again, four pounds? So I say yes please, thinking oh maybe that is the money value. He hauls out a massive brown bag and starts filling with a huge amount of mushrooms. So because he had checked with me I didn't want to say oh I've made a mistake. So I stood there and he filled this mega bag, I paid and left. You can imagine the comments when I got back to family where I was staying with mushroom supplies for a month 😂.

I wasn't sent out to the greengrocer again. 🤣

I was a youngster at the time, but I have still never lived this one down... .

RancidRuby · 18/12/2023 07:33

I thought I'd ordered 8 individual carrots once, but I'd actually ordered 8 bags of them.

Marwoodsbigbreak · 18/12/2023 07:36

My most memorable fuck up was the Christmas I thought I had ordered twenty sprouts (only two of us eat them)

Of course, the driver turned up with twenty net bags of sprouts!!!

Climbin · 18/12/2023 07:45

Surely you don't need to hold slot with items over $40? I just stick in milk or something, when other food is added later the charge for a small order disappears

I have never been charged extra for substitutes. Last year I ordered some champagne for Christmas which was on offer for £22. I got a bottle that cost £48 but still only paid £22.

My worst mistake was ordering what I thought was one piece of fresh ginger. When I picked up my click and collect there was 1 kg. The person who brought out my shopping let me pick out one bit and then refunded me the whole kilo. I have always found Tesco to be very fair.

I untick substitutions because if I'm buying something, that's what I want. If it's not available I don't want something slightly like it chosen by an algorithm or another person.

Why on earth would I keep the box ticked making more work for the picker in the shop, the delivery person and the person who has to sort all the substitutions back at the shop (which I suspect are only re-shelved if non-frozen or chilled)?

SparkyBlue · 18/12/2023 11:54

@DoraSpenlow I find Tesco great as well. They will always ask if I'm happy and do I want to give anything back

Jessforless · 18/12/2023 11:56

I once had the weirdest substitution… I wanted marshmallows for hot chocolate, they substituted with a giant snowman cake.

we kept it 😂

BeanyBops · 18/12/2023 12:25

Just an FYI you can turn things away at the door... No need to keep the salmon you don't want!
