‘Adore’ (Naomi Watts, Robin Wright)

I’ll have sex with your teenage son, and you have sex with mine….
Their marriages won’t stop us!

Awful.

Allfur · 17/12/2023 11:31

Big, when '12 year old' tom hanks has sex with his colleague

Starseeking · 17/12/2023 11:32

Grease

Starseeking · 17/12/2023 11:33

Gone girl

No hard feelings, Jennifer Lawrence recent movie, awful storyline

In fairness, though, we’re supposed to find it awful though, aren’t we? The parents are dreadful, and we’re not supposed to think it’s an ok thing to do to hire someone to be a ‘girlfriend experience’ for a shy school-leaver, and the son is crushed when he finds out.

naughtynine · 17/12/2023 11:35

Are there any fictional films with storylines or plots that make complete sense logically or morally?

Allfur · 17/12/2023 11:37

Barmecide, I agree its meant to be morally dubious, but it kinda grossed me out rather than entertained ne, you can tell it was written by 2 men

LittleBearPad · 17/12/2023 11:38

Allfur · 17/12/2023 11:22

Littlebearpad, re grease, isn't the point that they both try to change for each other

But they don’t both change. Danny bins the sports jacket as soon as Sandy rocks up in improbably tight black trousers with a fag in her mouth.

Any where an adult male befriends a young child - preferably an orphan - and promises them a lifetime supply of chocolate.

disclaimer - big RD fan and thoroughly enjoyed the latest film.

I thought you were talking about Annie!

Clicked now 🤣 WW

But bloody hell Mrs Hannigan...

FortheBeautyoftheEarth · 17/12/2023 11:46

Deathbyfluffy · 17/12/2023 11:14

That’s to draw adults in who are watching the film with the kid most of the time.

Kids don’t buy cinema tickets, adults do - so the film has to be appealing to adults too.
Marketing 101

Yeah I don't doubt it! It just irritates me tbh.

I think it’s less that than some films (often comedies or romcoms) normalise, romanticise or play for laughs fairly dubious stuff.

Mrs Doubtfire is a kind of comic take on Mrs Henry Wood’s 1861 sensation novel East Lynne where an adulterous ex-wife thought to be dead in a train crash returns to her former family home as a governess to her children, helped by disfiguring scars, blue glasses and a fake foreign accent — but she’s punished by the plot, finding governessing her children unacknowledged miserable, and losing two children to the train crash and TB, and dies broken. (Sensation novels loved people breaking the rules and punishing them thoroughly, to make sure the reader grasped this was Not Ok).

OK, the films we’re talking about aren’t from the mid-19thc, but there’s often a fairly disturbing subtext to the happy ending.

domesticslattern · 17/12/2023 11:49

Big is horrific.
I watched it with DD2 who was 😮that I chose it for her

HairdryerMary · 17/12/2023 11:50

@rocket74 did Charlie even want the chocolate factory? I don't think he did. He wanted a bedroom and some protein. Having to get that through taking on a huge business like the chocolate factory seemed like a big compromise. What if he had said no? Wonka would have just been like 'off you fuck then'. Does Charlie have any business acumen?
Don't even get me started on the first film version where Charlie drinks the fizzy lifting drink thus making him as bad as all the other children. Charlie is supposed to be Christ like and selfless, HE WOULD NOT HAVE STOLEN THE FIZZY LIFTING DRINK. It defeats the whole purpose of the tasks which Wonka sets to find the child worthy of the factory.

@Barmecide Ah I didn't know that. Interesting. The older I get the more I relate to Sally Fields' character. Daniel is a PITA.

Pretty woman is the worst - never liked it

Any pre-frozen Disney movie where the princess is gifted to the hero as a reward by the king.

Big
Sixteen candles
Pretty in pink
Breakfast club

Basically anything that treats women like meat

HairdryerMary · 17/12/2023 11:59

@MissBuffyAnneSummers my memory is hazy but why breakfast club?

Hairdryer Mary, Really loved Mrs Doubtfire ,however now it just seems a bit sad, like you say Daniel is a typical Disney Dad ,all big gestures (Petting zoo) and walking out of his job . Poor Miranda is left holding the fort .when she comes and says how many times she got home early to spend time with the children ,but ended up cleaning up again very poignant

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 17/12/2023 12:04

HairdryerMary · 17/12/2023 11:59

@MissBuffyAnneSummers my memory is hazy but why breakfast club?

Claire is sexually harassed throughout including sticking his head up her skirt to teach her to find herself

LolaSmiles · 17/12/2023 12:05

Pretty Woman and Dirty Dancing make me wince now. Especially when I remember how soppy I was about them as a teenager
I feel the same about Grease.

I had a summer romance with this boy. We've bumped into each other again at school and he's decided to give me the cold shoulder because he's embarrassed by me, but I really like him. I know, I should change everything about myself and my style and start smoking so he'll want to date me.

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 17/12/2023 12:09

Ooh I've watched all them films. Overboard is morally wild 😂lol. Good film though I haven't seen it for ages. Loads of films are morally wild lets be honest.

Mothership4two · 17/12/2023 12:09

Pretty Woman and Dirty Dancing make me wince at the time. Grease went over my head - I think I just enjoyed the songs

HairdryerMary · 17/12/2023 11:12

@sprigatito
Exactly
Oh my god I met this guy over the summer and we had an incredible love affair. He was a bit older and my dad didn't like him. He was being paid to grind against rich old ladies but he grinded with me for free! Then he called me up because he knew I was rich and his female friend needed money for an abortion so I got that from daddy but he had to find out anyway as it turned out to be dodgy.
So instead of me using this experience to highlight the need for safe and legal birth control and abortions, we just did a big dance at the end to really stick it to the man.

Very funny. 😅

Although I always thought the moral message was about not making assumptions about people, and about how “more innocent times” weren’t necessarily as innocent as all that.

Niche but … The Parent Trap . I know the Lindsay Lohan version was the remake of an old Disney film but parents of baby twins split, take one baby each , different continents, ….and never see either child ever again until they randomly bump into each other ….. AND THAT’S FINE???!

Edited

Yes!
I'm a parent of identical twins and we've enjoyed and watched these films numerous times over the years. However, the twins don't seem remotely cross about it, as you'd expect them to be. Lied to for their entire lives the existence of their sibling kept from them. Also doesn't treat them as individuals as the parents take one each and off they go. Would that have happened with different age siblings...

Run Fat boy Run (I’m looking at you Simon Pegg).
Where a man does a quest (run a marathon) and it rewarded with woman as prize (the woman he previously jilted at the altar).
