Pictures of niece in hospital all over SM but no idea what's wrong

So bil has posted pics of niece in hospital. She been in for a few days evidently. Lots of what's wrong? Hope she is OK? Posts from family, But nothing to say what is up with her. It's dhs brother kid. I don't feel like engaging over sm and it was serious surely mil or bil would have said? Any way it's up to dh to ask.

A a&e trip I can understand a quick frustrated hand hold FFS type post. But this feels different. She been in for days before posting on FB. Got to ask via SM what's going on? Am I being weird not to ask on SM? Leaving it to dh to ask directly.

What is the point of this thread? No aibu. Clearly an in-family issue

That's really shit. An aqauntance of mine announced my pregnancy on FB.

When dh had a near fatal accident at work I didn't tell anyone until I knew what was going on.

You can always ask in a private message on FB

Rewis · 16/12/2023 15:19

I had a colleague like this. She would tag her location to hospital ans write "here again 😢" and if people asked what's up she says "I'll DM. Don't want to share here".

Seaweed42 · 16/12/2023 15:20

"Not sure it's my place to chase that up?"

It certainly is not your place to chase it up.
Your DH has rung his brother. That's enough.

Lemsipper · 16/12/2023 15:22

Major cringe alert! Id probably go NC simply for the fact of them posting about it on social media. Cringe cringe cringe

steff13 · 16/12/2023 15:08

I don't understand why she wouldn't be able to call just because it isn't her sibling?

She would. But she already said DH was going to so it's just pointless

Phoned mil as instructed. Tonsillitis. Obviously not in the UK.

As a side note imagine get that level of care in the UK!

Not sure why bil didn't get back to dh or tell anyone why on FB buy it looks like a non issue

Why "obviously not in the UK"? People are hospitalised with tonsillitis in Britain too..

Allthingsdecember · 16/12/2023 15:34

God this drives me mad! MIL posts that she’s at the hospital multiple times a year, always with some vague tag looking for attention.

When you finally get a response, it’s either something entirely routine or very minor. It’s attention seeking and makes people worry for no reason.

On a side note, I usually find that the same people who post vaguely about being in hospital are the same people to absolutely milk someone dying on social media. It doesn’t matter how tenuously they knew the deceased, as long as it gets a few likes.

I’m not sure it’s the done thing to phone around everyone when you get admitted to hospital? It’d seem really attention seeking. Perhaps it’s generational - DH’s mum used to phone and tell us that aunt Jane’s daughter’s frog was at the vets, but it always felt a bit odd.

If DS was admitted, I’d probably tell friends as it’d come up in conversation, but I wouldn’t purposefully go out of my way to update every family member.

My reading of this would be that your DH & his brother aren’t that close.

Posting on SM is attention seeking. Either tell people and be honest about the detail so they don't worry unnecessarily, or keep it quiet.

AndThatWasNY · 16/12/2023 14:29

My friend found out their brother had died on FB before being told due to one of his "friends" posting it in an attention seeking post

An overseas student at uni died it was an accidental overdose because of the time difference his parents found out from Facebook.

JinglingSpringbells · 16/12/2023 15:58

Why don't people communicate by the 'old ways' rather than using social media?

It's a bit mad IMO.

Why don't you or your husband telephone?

Also, depending how old your niece is, does she agree to her medical stuff being there for people to read?

InSpainTheRain · 16/12/2023 15:58

Surely DH just calls his brother and asks what's wrong?

Not sure why the snide NHS comment.

I work in Paeds. Children are absolutely admitted for tonsillitis if they have trouble with intake( need fluids/pain relief) or a severe infection that requires IV antibiotics.

I actually didn’t think the hospital allowed photographs of inpatients, for exactly this reason.

Which staff would have time to be stopping parents/family members taking photographs of their own children? Children’s wards are busy!

We can ask not to take photos of other patients and staff but not their own family.

WorriedMum231 · 16/12/2023 16:04

People that put their sick kids on social media are so weird. Total invasion of child’s privacy. Medical records are supposed to confidential not attention seeking click bait.

chickendinnerroasted · 16/12/2023 14:18

Just say, 'Hey DH, our niece appears to be in hospital. You should ring your brother and ask if they are ok'.

Or alternatively you could post on MN and speculate with lots of strangers.

My thoughts exactly!

I've spent a lot of time at hospitals in the past few years and never known of any restrictions on photo taking. I could imagine there may be in certain places like icu/picu but none in NICU or the general adult and children wards

I’ve seen notices posted to that effect in our local hospital - one was in the childrens’ ward, but I think it’s generally frowned on because it would potentially include photos of other peoples’ children. On thinking back I think the other was in the high dependency unit, so you may be right.

Greenpolkadot · 16/12/2023 16:13

When my older sis had a cardiac episode and was admitted to ITU nobody knew about it until she came home
Her absolute AH of a dh wouldn't tell anyone.
My dmum was extremely upset and never forgave him.
What if this admission had a bad outcome...was he going to tell us after the event..?
Thankfully after many ahole episodes with him dsis got rid of him..

AlwaysFreezing · 16/12/2023 16:15

God, I hate this style of weird attention seeking bull shit.

You OK hun?
Pm.

Repeat.

Autumnalday · 16/12/2023 16:16

I don't understand why people post hospitals pics and updates on their Facebook. If you want family to know then just text them?

Mariposista · 16/12/2023 16:16

What a disgusting and attention seeking thing to do. Poor girl. Focus on your sick child and get off the phone.

TeenLifeMum · 16/12/2023 16:18

All those saying dh should just call, that’s fine however I cannot imagine a time when my nephew was in hospital and my brother would announce on fb before letting close family know. That’s not the dynamic of our family and I totally understand why op finds it odd. It would be very much frowned on in my world.

hellsBells246 · 16/12/2023 16:21

I hate people posting stupid Vaguebook posts and just waiting for people to ask how they are. Ffs.

IncessantNameChanger · 16/12/2023 16:25

It's the fact that he posted and didn't say what was wrong dispite about 30 odd replies asking him what was wrong I'm musing over.

FB is a quick one stop way to update everyone I get that. But I'd say why. I think.
