So I've been this morning to a new hair salon, since my usual lady of 7+ years has moved away.

I asked for highlights, but have just got home to natural light and feel like they're white yellow and streaky? Am I over analysing? I asked for a cool blonde, almost icy..

What do I do? I don't feel particularly satisfied with what I've got 😢

It's a bit early 2000s - some highlights are thick, others are thin. I would go back if you're unhappy. Toner should sort the blonde out to make it more cool.

fingerguns · 15/12/2023 16:28

P.s. Didn't mean that in a mean way, it's just inconsistent with the widths of the highlights!

Aquamarine1029 · 15/12/2023 16:28

Personally, I would not be happy with that at all. It looks like a total amateur did it.

escapethemaze · 15/12/2023 16:29

good grief they are awful

not highlight. Stripes

ideallyno · 15/12/2023 16:29

No I fully understand what you mean. The whole service felt rushed and I didn't leave feeling particularly happy. I'm worried now that my hair might not cope with more bleach if it needs correction. It's such a damaging procedure. I wish I went somewhere else 😣🤦🏼‍♀️

Its always hard to tell the true colour of anything in photos over the internet. I like the look and think they look great but if you happy can you go back and speak to the hairdresser?
It might be as easy a fix as using a different toner.

Its a completely first world problem I know, but I hate changing hairdressers too.

ideallyno · 15/12/2023 16:30

I've got to go to work tonight and I'm absolutely dreading it 🥲

I don’t think they look particularly yellow, not to my eyes in that photo anyway, but they are rather blocky, stripey sort of. I know the y2k look is in, but if that’s not what you wanted, that’s perfectly reasonable! I expect front-on it doesn’t look so noticeable does it?

thedukeofbuckinghamshire · 15/12/2023 16:32

I think they're fine! Can we see a pic with your hair loose to see how they blend? I don't think they're blocky at all.

just go back to the salon tomorrow (wearing a hat!), ask to see manager and they will take one look at it and see you have a point and let them figure out what to do

ManateeFair · 15/12/2023 16:33

I don't think it looks terrible but, from what you've said, it's not what you asked for. The highlights do look chunkier than I'd expect and it's definitely a yellow blonde rather than an icy blonde. It looks like your natural hair colour is a nice cool, ashy shade that would suit a cooler, icier highlight.

I don't know enough about hair processes to know how that could typically be corrected, but I would have thought that if you go back to the salon and explain that it's not what you asked for, they might be able to add a toner to take out some of the yellow?

Also those purple toned shampoos you can buy are usually good for toning down brassiness or yellow.

i have highlights and they are just that… blonde highlights

the OP has zebra stripes

op how much did you pay?

escapethemaze · 15/12/2023 16:34

your even tonight will be dim light op and much less obvious

EmmaEmerald · 15/12/2023 16:34

This might be no consolation as I have mixed race hair that's incredibly hard to colour...but I like it.

Different shades of blonde? Fab u lous! Wish I had that option.

In terms of thickness of lines, no one will see that when they're looking at hair that's not photographed to show that detail.

TossieFleacake · 15/12/2023 16:34

I think a toner along your parting will reduce the stripes, that's what my hairdresser does if the highlights look too obvious.

ideallyno · 15/12/2023 16:35

Thanks everyone. I feel so silly being so upset over it but I'm so disappointed. I spent £120

please say you’re not going to just roll over and accept this OP?!

Littlecatsocks · 15/12/2023 16:38

I like it. whenever I get highlights mine go a nasty colour! yours are a nice colour and the stripes are easy enough to add a root shadow or toner to.

WonderingWanda · 15/12/2023 16:39

Have you just had it done? I would go and give it a really good wash and then blow dry it yourself and see if that makes it better. Are the dark bits your natural colour? They look like they've been coated with something a bit oily which can make them look a bit dull. Also try a purple shampoo and see if that brightens them up.

ideallyno · 15/12/2023 16:39

This is toned, apparently! I just felt the whole service was rushed. She hurt my head when brushing it, the wash was uncomfortable and too cold.. just several things made it a really awful experience

OP posts:
WonderingWanda · 15/12/2023 16:40

Also look at blonde shampoos, some of them have brightening stuff in them which will lift the colour a bit.

ok so you’ve outlined your disappointment with the service and the end result

what will you do about it?

Hello!

My personal opinion, they aren't noticeably terrible. I would just look at you and think you're blonde. I'm not going to intricately look at each strand and judge you for your salon choices. I understand people on here offering their support and advice on going back but I don't think it's fair for some to make out like your hair looks vile. By all means do what you feel is right, have a chat with the salon, after all £120 needs to be spent on something that makes you happy! However I know you mention you have work this evening and don't want to go because of it, it's genuinely not hideous in the slightest. I promise. I really hope none of these comments have caused you to feel less than fabulous xx

catsnhats11 · 15/12/2023 16:43

I think the colour is cool blonde so what you asked for, the application is not so good though. Do you wear your hair down? That will give a better indication of how they look. maybe try a more natural parting too

Littlecatsocks · 15/12/2023 16:43

will changing your parting help break it up? even for tonight only?
