Friend washed up the dog bowl with our dinner plates

This happened a few months ago but has just came up in conversation IRL.

Went round a friends casually for some dinner. As she put our plates & cutlery in the washing up bowl she also put the dog's dinner bowl in there and washed it up together with the SAME sponge.

I do laugh at this now, but at the time I was like 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳.

AIBU to think is this absolutely disgusting?!

I'm never eating in someone's else's house again 😩😩 the replies on here are gross 🤢

But what is bothering you about this?

For the people saying I'm being unreasonable. Do you also let your dog lick your face and sleep in your bed?

What's that got to do with washing up a dog bowl with other crockery?

MaggieBsBoat · 10/12/2023 11:51

I think dogs are generally disgusting and I wouldn’t have them in my house, but if I did then I don’t see the issue with washing their stuff with mine. It’s seems weird to have a dog and then take issue with its bowl.

What's the problem? Either the water, soap and sponge aren't doing a good enough job to clean the dog bowl if it's in with other washing (in which case surely even without the dog bowl you're saying your own dishes aren't being washed properly either) or everything's coming out perfectly clean and there's no issue.

Dishwasher all the way

100% agree. Washing up with sponges and stuff has never struck me as ever so clean.

More bacteria than a loo seat

TheShellBeach · 10/12/2023 11:52

Have you got OCD or some kind of germ phobia, OP?

WaltzingWaters · 10/12/2023 11:52

You know dog food has to be fit for human consumption?

Not quite so! Although pet food is initially required to be fit for human consumption in the UK (not in the USA), it does not have to be kept to the same standards before sale.

Aside from this the dog has been licking the bowel, probably as well as licking its bum, and that bowel is being washed with human’s stuff.

Before touching my cats bowl I don a hazmat suit, I then pick up the bowl with tongs held at arms length, I carefully place it inside my purpose built autoclave and sterilise the fuck out of it. Once sterilised I carry it outside and incinerate it. You really can't be too careful. New, hermetically sealed bowls everytime here.

I bet you was popular in school!

I wash the cat bowls in the sink with the washing up sponge. I wouldn't wash them in with other dishes but it's the same sponge I use

Yuck

LemonLight · 10/12/2023 11:53

I put my cats bowl in the dishwasher after it's been soaked in soapy water and rinsed. I wouldn't put the dogs bowl in the dishwasher though. The dog is technically my husband's and he's nice but I do find dogs kind of gross compared to cats.

daisybe · 10/12/2023 11:54

My dogs food is actually human grade. It's literally meat, potatoes, grains like quinoa and veg and herbs. It smells nicer than my own cooking!!

We keep cans as back up, but generally ours eats a good real-food diet. So it depends....

I rinse the bowl to get the residue out. Then wash as normal in dishwasher.

LylaLee · 10/12/2023 11:54

Lick arse. Lick bowl. Rub that with a sponge. Then rub that on a drinking glass.

No thanks.

’My dog bowl doesn't enter my kitchen’ 😄
Why?

Because the dog sits at the dinner table with the rest of the family for meal times?

Madameprof · 10/12/2023 11:56

Wow. People really seem to have lost sight of the fact that using hot water and detergent, you know, cleans things. I assume the same people are weird about washable period pants too. You are literally washing stuff and then it's clean. The sponge itself is also being cleaned by the detergent while you use it! Sponges and cloths are only germy if you don't wash and rinse them well as part of their usage.

TortolaParadise · 10/12/2023 11:56

Saw a greyhound sitting on a chair in a high street coffee chain drinking babychino out of a saucer (saucer from the teacup set from the store not a dog bowl as some chains provide).

The people happy to spread cat/dog shit on their crockery or the people who prefer to keep things separate?

Flensburg · 10/12/2023 11:56

Yep

I'm genuinely shocked at some of the replies I've read about levels of hygiene. But of course, each to their own!

For reference, I was raised by Irish parents.. say no more! 😅
