Friend washed up the dog bowl with our dinner plates

This happened a few months ago but has just came up in conversation IRL.

Went round a friends casually for some dinner. As she put our plates & cutlery in the washing up bowl she also put the dog's dinner bowl in there and washed it up together with the SAME sponge.

I do laugh at this now, but at the time I was like 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳.

AIBU to think is this absolutely disgusting?!

They don’t. I’ve never seen a dog shit and immediately lick its arse. Ever.

What do you think they are doing when they lick their arses?

OneMiniMincePieTooFar · 11/12/2023 09:05

Hmm, first post wind up?

For the people saying I'm being unreasonable. Do you also let your dog lick your face and sleep in your bed?

YABU - and yes, when I had a dog I had no problem with it licking my face, and yes, they slept in my bed.

TheBraves · 11/12/2023 09:06

Your choice, lovely. However the op had been to someone's house for dinner and watched the host do this! You should tell guests you wash human's pots along with pet pots and let them choose if they don't mind share such manky habits. I would guarantee you won't have many takers.

Or maybe you should assume that people with animals may do this so it’s your responsibility to ask/choose not to come if it offends. If someone asked, I’d tell them.

Our friends don’t care, they do the same and visit our house very regularly. We have a lot of rescue animals so there’s often an injured animal or 10 around too.

mamabear9898 · 11/12/2023 09:08

I totally get the logic of dog food being fit for human consumption. However same sponge? And in the same water? I'd be worried about the hair and anything else that may fall off of the dog?

My cats have separate sponge and i wash them separately and then I wash it out after??

Mine only poo on walks. Which I pick up and put in a bag. If their bottom isn't entirely clean, they get a quick bath at home. I don't want dirty dog backside around my house.

Neither have I, and I've had several dogs. Some people do talk a load of rubbish.

'They don’t. I’ve never seen a dog shit and immediately lick its arse. Ever.'

Confused

That is exactly what they all do! maybe not 'immediately' it would be a bit awks when our walking but as soon as they are home they do indeed clean their bums by licking, they then lick their bowls. So you're then washing them with your own? Nice.

Yes I am. In a dishwasher that sterilises everything at a very high temperature. That’s a lot nicer than your hand hot water and bacteria laden sponge.

And loads of people you meet every day go to the toilet and don't wash their hands. Or pick their nose then handle stuff you'll handle. That grosses me out more.

You know soap and hot water kills germs right?

You're being fully insane OP

If you are washing by hand the water won't be hot enough to kill germs.

Op, I'm sure nothing bad would happen but yeah it's a bit disgusting. I wouldn't mind if going in the dishwasher with the other dishes as it's just a bit more effective at cleaning.

madeinmanc · 11/12/2023 09:20

Grim and unhygienic, this country has gone dog mad and the sooner people realise it and bring back some standards like not peeing and pooing all over the place, not bringing dogs into food stores, keeping their dogs on the lead and not letting their dogs sit on chairs, the better. This is not the dogs' fault, it's the fault of ignorant, unhygienic owners.

Isobel201 · 11/12/2023 09:21

My cat bowls get the old bits thrown into the bin with a dirty human knife, then it all gets put in the dishwasher. I wouldn't wash them altogether in a washing up bowl using a sponge.

A dishwasher doesn't sterilise, if it did there would be not such thing as an autoclave. Protozoa, for example, are not killed by dishwashers. Look up protozoa and Mad Cow Disease.

Have you thought where humans mouths have been that have eaten off your forks, spoons and drank out of your cups? Or that these things have them been washed up together in cafes and pubs etc and you have used them. If you think about things like this too much, you’ll become obsessed.

Janiie · 11/12/2023 09:26

Yep gross too. If I knew my friend didn't wash their hands after going to the loo I wouldnt eat at their house either.

I mean I'm no germaphobe but there are some very basic standards that really shouldn't need spelling out and pet pots not getting washed with people's pots is one of them.

I don't wash my cow's dishes in the dishwasher though.

You know what the point is here. You don't mix animal and human dishes. It's a basic hygiene standard, an absolute bare, bare minimum.

I know, I was just being silly. :-) Fresh rinsed dog dishes I'll do in the hot dishwasher. I don't do any of the other animals in there though. They're grosser.

It does. You can sterilise baby bottles in a dishwasher. Autoclaves are for dry sterilisation.

madeinmanc · 11/12/2023 09:37

I'd sooner eat from a plate washed in a dishwasher that had a cow plate in it (herbivore) than a dog's! 🐮

MasterBeth · 11/12/2023 09:39

It's a bit gross but not unhygenic.

allitdoesisrain · 11/12/2023 09:39

My guests will never know what my dishwasher habits are, as I don't know theirs.

I've heard of people washing their toilet brushes and sex toys in the dishwasher. I don't have the latter and would never do either them or a toilet brush in the dishwasher. I'd be grossed out if I knew anyone did that and I had to use their dishes.

So all the campaigns begging us to wash our hands, pointless? Even those telling us it didn’t have to be hot water? Well if it doesn’t stop germs I’m going to stop washing my hands after I’ve been to the toilet, after all it doesn’t kill germs does it?

Huh??????

It's the soap that kills the germs when you are washing your hands (or dishes by hand). Not the temperature of the water. It doesn't matter if you use hot water or not as it wouldn't be hot enough anyway to kill any germs. You do need soap though.

Hope that helps. :-)
