Friend washed up the dog bowl with our dinner plates

This happened a few months ago but has just came up in conversation IRL.

Went round a friends casually for some dinner. As she put our plates & cutlery in the washing up bowl she also put the dog's dinner bowl in there and washed it up together with the SAME sponge.

I do laugh at this now, but at the time I was like 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳.

AIBU to think is this absolutely disgusting?!

I mean it is disgusting definitely, I know dog food can is technically edible for humans but the dog has been licking out of the bowl! And using the same sponge for that is gross, however you won't get ill or anything like that

TheYearOfSmallThings · 10/12/2023 11:40

I did not know that!

Yes….because it’s served on the floor, just at the right height for a baby.

my dog bowls go in the dishwasher. The dog often gives ‘our ‘ plates a ‘pre wash’. As it’s going in at 65 degrees for 2 hours before getting steam dried, I can’t get excited.

Mummymummy89 · 10/12/2023 11:45

My in laws load the dishwasher with dirty plates and then leave the door open and let the dogs lick the plates as a treat before shutting it and turning it on.

I know the dishwasher cleans it all but it's just so gross to watch eeurgh.

Also they come in from the supermarket and put the bags on the floor, and then the dogs rip into the bags curiously and MIL just playfully goes "Oh Dogname you naughty thing haha stop that!" But in an indulgent tone of voice. Boxes of biscuits then get put away with the wrapping ripped off and the odd biscuit has to be removed because it has slobber on. Every time...it's like they buy extra knowing some will get wasted in this way!

I'm not a dog person I'll admit

23snowisfalling · 10/12/2023 11:45

Do you have a phobia about your own dogs and their germs?

If I had a real phobia about germs from animals I wouldn't own a dog at all

For the people saying I'm being unreasonable. Do you also let your dog lick your face and sleep in your bed?

He sleeps in my bed and tries to lick my face, does that count?

(Although I don't think you're being unreasonable)

Philandbill · 10/12/2023 11:45

Rank. I'd never want to eat there again. And I expect she's done that for years and you've suffered no ill effects but now you know so every time you have a coffee there...

DiaNaranja · 10/12/2023 11:46

No that's grim. I rinse mine in the sink after everything else, and then they go in the dishwasher every other day. They only have dry food so nothing gross in the bowl, other than their saliva, but still gross. If your friend had remnants of chappie in the bowl, it could end up stuck to a dinner plate.

Cross posted with this lol hi MIL!

TheStoryof10 · 10/12/2023 11:47

Yanbu, my dog's bowl does not mingle with ours and I definitely don't use the same sponge. My dog eats other animal's shit, that would be all I'd be able to think about on my sponge. No thanks.

dementedpixie · 10/12/2023 11:47

I wash the cat bowls in the sink with the washing up sponge. I wouldn't wash them in with other dishes but it's the same sponge I use

Well my cat does and I wash his bowl in with our washing up.
What's the problem? I don't understand.

houseonthehill · 10/12/2023 11:47

I mean... some people find it disgusting, but they are being entirely irrational in that.

23snowisfalling · 10/12/2023 11:38

I wouldn't even do this. My dog bowl doesn't enter my kitchen

😂Fully bonkers.

I'm never eating in someone's else's house again 😩😩 the replies on here are gross 🤢

I don’t like or own dogs and even I don’t see an issue with this. Human saliva germs will be on the plates and cutlery anyway, hot water and soap is fine for that so why not dog saliva? Plus people who own dogs generally let them lick their hands and faces and sit on furniture, and considering dogs don’t wipe their backsides, they basically smear traces of shit everywhere. A shared dish sponge is tame in comparison.

I let all three of mine sleep in my bed but I don’t let them lick my face and I wouldn’t wash their bowls in the same water/with the same sponge as our plates.

My MIL lets one of our dogs lick her plate when she’s finished eating and I loathe it.

where does your dog eat ? anyway my Dh is like you he nearly fainted at the thoughtof the dogs dinner spoon going in the dishwasher I mean it is all sterilised and clean. although I do wash the bowls by hand for quickness.

Infusedwithfigandhoney · 10/12/2023 11:49

ImAGullibleIdiot · 10/12/2023 11:41

It’s more that an animal has licked the bowl, not that dog food is the issue.

Surely it's more that it's licked it's arse !

Then eaten it's dinner, bacteria festering on sponge 🤮
Washing up is revolting anyway.
Manky grey greasy water
Dishwasher all the way.

TheShellBeach · 10/12/2023 11:49

If your friend had remnants of Chappie in the bowl, it could end up stuck to a dinner plate

And this would be a problem because.........?

GalileoHumpkins · 10/12/2023 11:50

Before touching my cats bowl I don a hazmat suit, I then pick up the bowl with tongs held at arms length, I carefully place it inside my purpose built autoclave and sterilise the fuck out of it. Once sterilised I carry it outside and incinerate it. You really can't be too careful. New, hermetically sealed bowls everytime here.

DewHopper · 10/12/2023 11:50

Dishwasher all the way

100% agree. Washing up with sponges and stuff has never struck me as ever so clean.

rorret · 10/12/2023 11:51

I would wash the dog bowl last after everything else. I only have a sink in my kitchen and bathroom - where else would I wash it?

SutWytTi · 10/12/2023 11:51

Thiswayorthatway · 10/12/2023 11:36

You know dog food has to be fit for human consumption?

It's not the food that's the problem, obviously.
