Friend washed up the dog bowl with our dinner plates

This happened a few months ago but has just came up in conversation IRL.

Went round a friends casually for some dinner. As she put our plates & cutlery in the washing up bowl she also put the dog's dinner bowl in there and washed it up together with the SAME sponge.

I do laugh at this now, but at the time I was like 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳.

AIBU to think is this absolutely disgusting?!

No it's proper grim. All my animal bowls etc get washed separately and with separate sponges/cloths.

^^ This. My ex’s parents did this and it’s gross. I don’t want their dog licking it’s arse, slobbering over its food bowl and then all that being spread round plates, cups and cutlery I’m going to eat off. It’s lazy and unhygienic. Wash animal bowls separately with separate cloths/brushes, preferably in a utility sink but definitely not in with human dishes.

Daisies12 · 10/12/2023 13:22

YABU. I wash cat food bowls in with our stuff. Never caused an issue

SheIsStuck23 · 10/12/2023 13:24

🤢

When I see dogs licking people faces it honestly makes me want to be sick. It’s disgusting.

I wouldn't even do this. My dog bowl doesn't enter my kitchen

Where does your dog bowl go? Does it get washed?

RainDropsStorm · 10/12/2023 13:34

That's absolutely 🤮🤢

I clean my dogs bowl in the sink with hot water, fairy and a new sponge. I don't use the basin. After, I bin the sponge and clean my sink.

FreshWinterMorning · 10/12/2023 13:36

This kind of thread comes up on here a few times a year. Of course it's foul and gross, and no-one I know in real life would do it. But on MN - according to some - it's perfectly fine to wash pet bowls with human bowls. Hint: it's not - it's gross, and unhygenic.

ClaireEclair · 10/12/2023 13:37

I was visiting a friend and she was cleaning the dishes with a sponge. After she finished she cleaned a spot on the kitchen floor with the same sponge. I didn’t know how to react. I haven’t been back since.

You use a new sponge every day to wash your dog bowls? Because you do wash them every day, right? Do you do the same and use a new sponge every day with the human washing up too?

What a horrendous and needless waste of plastic 😕

I'm honestly not sure whether this is a serious comment or not. How many sponges do you get through in a week? Obviously we have to balance caring for our families and caring for the planet, but personally I wouldn't be drawing the line there.

existentialpain · 10/12/2023 13:45

I do this all the time.

tomatoontoast · 10/12/2023 11:41

That's disgusting.

It's why I don't eat anything home made from anyone's houses!

Same here.

The only homecooked food I eat is my own. Ever.

wjpa · 10/12/2023 13:46

I let my dog sleep in my bed and lick my face. Dh kisses the dog on the mouth. We put the dog bowl in the dishwasher and he’s also allowed to lick plates sometimes, depending if what’s on it is alright for him to eat.

in my defence, the dog is a little lapdog who is on lead on walks always and when we get in, he goes in the sink and any dirt is washed off him. He wears a coat covering most of his body so we only need to wash his feet, mouth and arse end.

Grimchmas · 10/12/2023 13:48

The people who say it's gross to wash up in a bowl really make me laugh. I can see and change the water, I can wash stuff in order from least dirty to most - whereas you're chucking it all in a machine that sloshes the grease and food particles around everything, and most of you don't clean your dishwasher often enough 🤢

Stuff food comes into contact with doesn't generally need to be sanitised, it needs to be clean. Whether you do that in a machine or by hand is each to their own, but people who are snobby about handwashing dishes for this reason are BU.

Vegetus · 10/12/2023 13:50

My mum's dogs always clean the plates before they go and get washed. Genuinely never crossed my mind some people would class this is 'gross' they get washed properly after. She's been doing this for 30 years and it doesn't seem to have made anyone ill.

wjpa · 10/12/2023 13:50

Oh and I feed my dog human grade food

RainDropsStorm · 10/12/2023 13:50

Yes, I am being serious. Yes, I do wash dog bowls everyday. Human dishes go in the dishwasher. The sponges I use are environmentally friendly but I agree still wasteful.

Willyoujustbequiet · 10/12/2023 13:51

Thiswayorthatway · 10/12/2023 11:36

You know dog food has to be fit for human consumption?

It's not the food, it's the dog.

Ewwww op. That's disgusting.

Slitheringheights · 10/12/2023 13:52

My mum done this. I was recovering from a major operation a few months ago. Went into the kitchen and she was washing the dirty cat bowl in the sink with my dish cloth thing that I use for dishes. I know she was trying to help but 🤮🤮. God even now thinking about it makes me want to 🤢

If they’re environmentally friendly then presumably they don’t contain plastic and are made of cotton or similar? In which case maybe they can be washed and reused. I use plain cloths for washing up/wiping round kitchen etc and I put them on a hot wash in the machine with tea towels.

Vasilevich · 10/12/2023 13:56

23snowisfalling · 10/12/2023 11:41

For the people saying I'm being unreasonable. Do you also let your dog lick your face and sleep in your bed?

Yes

Although current dog isn't really a licker and is now too old to get up on the bed...

The dog bowl goes in the dishwasher. It is fine. Happy to wash it in a bowl of hot soapy water with the same sponge though.

I don't think you are getting the full health benefits of dog ownership (more good gut bacteria and less bad gut bacteria has now been indicated by a few studies) OP 😂. My ZOE results showed had had a excellent gut biome and I'm almost never ill 😀.

CacenCaws · 10/12/2023 13:57

I will soak my dog's plate then rinse & put in dishwasher with everything else. If I did wash it by hand I would do it at the end then bin the sponge.

My dog does sleep in my bed and occasionally lick my face too

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 10/12/2023 13:57

Okay, for the people who think kissing dogs is disgusting, washing bowls together etc, you do realise that dogs saliva has antiseptic properties as does ours, but dog’s saliva is much more antiseptic:

There may be healing properties in a dog's saliva, and this may be another reason that they lick their wounds. Certain proteins in dog saliva called histatins can defend against infection, and research has shown that there are other beneficial chemicals in a dog's saliva that can help protect cuts from infection.

You are welcome 🤗

I had such a lovely image of your dog eating his/her dinner with a spoon, until the penny dropped!B 😄

Edited

tbf he would let me spoon feed him given half the chance 😂

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 10/12/2023 13:58

Oh yes and to add, I kiss my dog all the time
