Friend washed up the dog bowl with our dinner plates

This happened a few months ago but has just came up in conversation IRL.

Went round a friends casually for some dinner. As she put our plates & cutlery in the washing up bowl she also put the dog's dinner bowl in there and washed it up together with the SAME sponge.

I do laugh at this now, but at the time I was like 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳.

AIBU to think is this absolutely disgusting?!

Nooooo 🤮🤢

autienotnaughty · 10/12/2023 22:47

Well dogs have around 600 types of bacteria in their mouths and humans have over 10000 on their hands.

Maybe the dogs should be complaining.

TheShellBeach · 10/12/2023 22:00

Why?
What do you believe the risk to be?

Is everything about risk? Some things are just disgusting. Dogs lick their genitals and their poo. I don't want that on me. I didn't want that on my cutlery, on my mugs, on my plates or on my glasses.

The sponge goes on where the dog has licked, onto where humans eat and drink. That's disgusting.

If a stranger wiped snot on you there's not much 'risk'. Probably the same as sneezing next to you. It's disgusting though, isn't it? Same for this bowl thing.

If a dog has bollocks those bollocks will touch carpets and sofas (if you let your animal on furniture) and people may come into contact with where dog genitalia has been. IMAGINE THAT!

Janiie · 11/12/2023 08:27

I'm with you op it's gross. I'd bet the folk supporting minging washing up habits on here also happily let their pets lick leftovers straight from their plates 🤢.

Arse licking dog's saliva covered pots shouldnt be washed with the same sponges or in the same water as human's things. It is very, very basic good hygiene isn't it.

Do the same people know you wash your hands after going to the loo or is that open for debate too?

BIossomtoes · 11/12/2023 08:32

This thread’s a joke isn’t it? Competitive 🤮

If you knew what bacteria your disgusting washing up sponge that only washes human dishes held, you’d die. If you wash up by hand your dishes aren’t being sterilised because you couldn’t put your hands in the water.

Janiie · 11/12/2023 08:33

'If a dog has bollocks those bollocks will touch carpets and sofas (if you let your animal on furniture) and people may come into contact with where dog genitalia has been. IMAGINE THAT!'

But you don't eat your own food off bollock contaminated carpets and sofas.

I'd no idea hygiene was such a confusing issue for some.

Alargeoneplease89 · 11/12/2023 08:34

It's not something I do but I wouldn't lose sleep over it... I mean most people wash up prep bowls / scissors with their plates after a meal, such as a bowl thats had raw chicken that's marinated.

Then again this is mn there are probably 50 different cloths and sinks / towels used.

Wolvesart · 11/12/2023 08:38

DiaNaranja · 10/12/2023 11:46

No that's grim. I rinse mine in the sink after everything else, and then they go in the dishwasher every other day. They only have dry food so nothing gross in the bowl, other than their saliva, but still gross. If your friend had remnants of chappie in the bowl, it could end up stuck to a dinner plate.

Surely washing something every other day rather than every day is more gross. We don’t wash our own plates every other day do we.

I dont have pets, I’d probably was their bowls separately if I did and maybe a different sponge but mostly just using hot soapy water and last in sequence of washing up if not sep.

Janiie · 11/12/2023 08:38

'Then again this is mn there are probably 50 different cloths and sinks / towels used.'

I'm sure most people either have a dishwasher or one washing up sponge. I've never known anyone even on mn have 50.

Cross contamination is actually a real thing that's why food outlets have strict rules. Slavery dog bowls really shouldn't be washed with humans stuff. Well they can, but don't invite folk round for food without warning them of very slack standards cleanliness wise in the kitchen.

I wouldn't die. I'm really not that scared of germs.

It wouldn’t bother me, although we put ours in the dishwasher with other stuff. My dog sometimes has a drink of tea from my cup though and I’m not dead yet. You also appear to have lived to tell the tale OP, so it’s not really worth thinking about.

Your choice, lovely. However the op had been to someone's house for dinner and watched the host do this! You should tell guests you wash human's pots along with pet pots and let them choose if they don't mind share such manky habits. I would guarantee you won't have many takers.

allitdoesisrain · 11/12/2023 08:48

I have a different brush for animal dishes and do dog bowls after human dishes if I do them in the sink. I've got a bit lazy with the dishwasher and started putting fresh dog dishes in there. I rinse them first, it gets good and hot, and no-one has got sick or died from it. Yes my dog sleeps on my bed too. He's never licked his poo though and I've never seen any dog do that.

I wouldn't put dog dishes in the dishwasher in front of friends though. Clearly some people take issue with it.

Do you watch your dog 24/7? Do you wipe your dog's arse clean? They lick the way we use toilet paper/bidet.

He licks his backside to clean himself, but not actual poo directly.

No big deal. Studies show how many people don't wash their hands after going to the toilet or before cooking. I'd be much more concerned about that. Humans are grosser.

They don’t. I’ve never seen a dog shit and immediately lick its arse. Ever.

LadyBird1973 · 11/12/2023 08:54

Presumable the people getting the ick by this also eat in restaurants, where total strangers (and their germs) have used the same plates and cups.
If it's getting washed up properly I can't see why it matters.

A bit of common sense

dont see how anyone could argue against this

Nasty, I have separate sponges and do their bowls and cutlery last.

My dogs dont use cutlery btw, it's the ones I use to make up their food 😂

Mine use cutlery when I give them something off my fork. lol (Sticking off the end so they don't actually touch the fork at all).

why do they need to eat off your fork though?

I suppose they don't, it's just mildly amusing to us.
