Friend washed up the dog bowl with our dinner plates

This happened a few months ago but has just came up in conversation IRL.

Went round a friends casually for some dinner. As she put our plates & cutlery in the washing up bowl she also put the dog's dinner bowl in there and washed it up together with the SAME sponge.

I do laugh at this now, but at the time I was like 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳.

AIBU to think is this absolutely disgusting?!

So: their house, their dog, their plates, they paid for and cooked your dinner, they washed up, and you’ve taken to MN to comment on how “absolutely disgusting” they are? 🧐🧐🤯

GymBergerac · 10/12/2023 15:46

We've had pets as long as I can remember, and now have five cats.
I wash their bowls up with our washing up every night and nothing awful has ever happened. The bowls are empty of any meat/biscuits when they go in the sink, I wash up in really hot water with plenty of washing up liquid. All come out nice and clean, no harm done.

Cupcakekiller · 10/12/2023 15:53

I wash the cat's bowl after use with our pots and even use the same forks as we use. Yes he licks me and sleeps in our bed 🤷🏻‍♀️

RainDropsStorm · 10/12/2023 16:06

@Grimchmas the sponges I use are biodegradable but your right. The cost/amount put in bin does add up. I have a little bucket for dirty cloths to sit in before I wash them. Will start using a cloth for the dog bowls and pop it in my cloth bucket.

WingsofRain · 10/12/2023 16:14

Absolutely - dogs aren’t poisonous!
I’d much rather eat off a plate a dog has licked than one a human has licked. Plus, the whole point of washing dishes is to clean them, so once they are washed there isn’t a problem.
You are much more likely to get an infection that will actually affect you from a human, with easily transmissible diseases than a dog.

You are definitely being unreasonable on this.

buckingmad · 10/12/2023 16:18

But it gets washed with hot soapy water? Do you wear gloves to the toilet and then bin them? Otherwise by your logic it’s gross to touch anything with the same hands that have touched the toilet, even if you have washed them.

PickledPurplePickle · 10/12/2023 16:36

What a weird thing to worry about

jt wouldn’t even enter my head

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/12/2023 16:37

Dog bowls get washed after I've washed everything else. My dogs are allowed anywhere in the house, apart from my dd's bedroom as she has too much crap in her room. They even sleep on our beds, shock horror😱

A friend of a work colleague washes her toilet brush in the dish washer with all the usual plates 🤢

I buy the £2 ones in IKEA and every six months or so, I throw them away.

GandalfTheWhite · 10/12/2023 16:47

YANBU I have 2 dogs and always wash their bowls separately to our dishes, they are usually extremely slimey from all the drool.

ChocolateTurtle · 10/12/2023 17:13

YANBU, we wash the cat bowls seperately, and with a seperate sponge.

Willyoujustbequiet · 10/12/2023 18:21

TheWanderingWoman · 10/12/2023 14:21

@Willyoujustbequiet I read a story a few days ago about a woman who lost both of her hands and legs to a rare form of sepsis after her dog licked a scratch on her arm. So that sounds like very sensible advice from your vet!

The poor woman, that's horrific.

Yes our vet was adamant. He kept gloves on throughout too. People are far too complacent.

ALongHardWinter · 10/12/2023 18:42

Personally,I wouldn't do this, but then again,if someone did do this in my house,I wouldn't get too stressed about it.

Pickingmyselfup · 10/12/2023 18:47

I would prefer them not to be in the same water but I have to admit I do occasionally wash the cats bowls up or put them in the dishwasher along with everything else without soaking first.

It's just the food that puts me off, I think if they were raw fed or dry only I wouldn't bat an eyelid. My kids are equally disgusting in their own way but they are allowed to give me a kiss or touch me with their sticky (less so now tbf) hands.

23snowisfalling · 10/12/2023 11:41

For the people saying I'm being unreasonable. Do you also let your dog lick your face and sleep in your bed?

Um..... well yes 😬

ismu · 10/12/2023 19:07

My dog sleeps in our bed and all his bowls go in the dishwasher immediately he's finished. He has a clean bowl for every meal ( 3 a day) and a clean water bowl daily. He's cleaner than most kids. If you've ever seen school water bottles you'd change your tune OP.

Lizziebest · 10/12/2023 21:32

Well this has been eye opening and a reminder to never eat food from anybody's house

Why?
What do you believe the risk to be?

Yep 👍

ChicagoBears · 10/12/2023 22:10

🤢🤮

Tawlk · 10/12/2023 22:10

Absolutely gross 🤢

Tawlk · 10/12/2023 22:11

And I can’t believe people put dog bowls in the dishwasher 🤮

alphamonkey · 10/12/2023 22:11

You allow a dog in your house but you wouldn't have their bowl in your kitchen? I don't get that at all. Do you ever touch your dog? Or god forbid allow it to lick you?

Our dogs bowl goes in the dishwasher with our players. It's absolutely fine. Unclench.

alphamonkey · 10/12/2023 22:12

Why not? High temperatures, water and soap kill germs. What do you think is going to happen?
