Reality tv shows you can't stand & why

shoutandpout · 09/12/2023 23:33

Can I say all of them. Ok well I don't like reality tv that exists for the point of watching people do nothing I.e gogglebox and for sake of drama ie. I'm a celebrity get me out of here, Married at first sight, made in Chelsea, towie etc- I know some people like watching these shows for whatever reason but I just don't see the point of giving these people air time and making these people famous - we've got enough z-listers out there. The only reality shows I like are usually creative competition shows like bake off, sewing bee, glow up and others like that where I can see people's creative talents on show. What do you think ? 🤔

I don’t watch any of them. I watched the first series of big brother and the first couple of series of the apprentice but they all now seem to want “characters” and drama. It’s all so contrived and engineered that I can’t be arsed with it. Even things like Britain’s Got Talent are so artificial - the producers search internationally for talent and then create a narrative around them.

CharlottePimpernel · 10/12/2023 13:57

All of them. I don't like Bake Off or Strictly either, or MasterChef, or celebrities doing whatever it is this week. Can't stand any of it.

RaraRachael · 10/12/2023 14:06

I don't watch any of them and feel like some sort of alien when I'm at the hairdresser and she asks, "Are you watching the jumgle2 "Who do you think will win Strictly" etc
We watched the first couple of seasons of Pop Idol and Britain's Got Talent but they're all so tired nowadays. The "celebrities" are usually people I don't know so I've no interest in any of it.
I watched Bake Off once as there was a local man in it but that was it,

CharlottePimpernel · 10/12/2023 15:50

Oh I tell a lie - I watched a couple of episodes of MasterChef when my cousin was in it, but I fast forwarded to his bits.

Ditto, cheap to make TV with no entertainment value.

SocksAndTheCity · 10/12/2023 16:09

I like the pottery one and the sewing bee. I don't watch any of the others, although I did watch the first few Big Brothers back when it started.

The only other exception I can think of was Physical 100 on Netflix. Riveted 😀

EmpressSoleil · 10/12/2023 16:25

I don’t really like any of them but I guess my least favourite are singing shows, the voice, X factor etc. Watching someone sing is just not enjoyable in any way to me. I’m not big on music anyway. There are a few artists I listen to occasionally but that’s it. So watching a stranger sing a song I probably don’t like anyway. Why would I? Likewise strictly, again watching people dance is not entertaining to me.

Celebrity to me now usually means someone I’ve never heard of! But I’m ok with that. If someone I liked was going to be in one of those shows, I might watch it. But the people I like are too famous for them really! Seems you have to be a Z lister to qualify.

riotlady · 10/12/2023 16:44

I like a lot of them but hate I’m A Celebrity- why would I want to watch people eat bugs and wade around in fish guts?

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 10/12/2023 16:48

Hate I’m a celeb, Big Brother, talent shows, etc.

Love The Apprentice, Traitors and Love is Blind is my guilty pleasure.

TastyLikeARaindrop · 10/12/2023 16:49

I enjoy Hunted and Race Across the world, both 'normal' and celeb versions. I got very into Traitors. Not into Love Island or any other dating type shows.

Shadowsindarkplaces · 10/12/2023 17:06

All of them, cheap, shite tv.

I want to watch good quality dramas, films, and comedy that is actually funny!!
I also can't stick anything with graphic violence or sexual scenes either. Lack of talent necessitates both. Good story writers, actors, and directors don't need to rely on either.

Hipnotised · 10/12/2023 17:10

This season's I'm a Celebrity and the 100% reason is Farage.

Sparehair · 10/12/2023 17:15

Quite like Goggle Box- there are some gems. Like Bake Off. Like Traitors ( although I’d say that’s more a game show than reality Tv) Strictly, IAC and BGT are really tired and need to be retired. BGT especially is a load of semi-scripted bollocks. Never got into TOWIE/MIC etc- again I don’t really get the semi scripted reality stuff.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 10/12/2023 17:16

Love Island- a show that celebrates being thick- cannot bear it!!!

Also never watch a show that makes me feel old and fat.

PermanentTemporary · 10/12/2023 17:21

Like pps I watched Traitors and enjoyed it though it was annoying at times, but the US version was appalling - lots of people who appear to be career reality TV competition entrants. They were all very obviously performing and trying to present some kind of 'story'. It made me think how godawful most reality TV shows are. I'm so grateful I don't live with anyone who likes it.

I stopped watching bake-off when it moved to C4 as I thought it was already very tired.

Ginmonkeyagain · 10/12/2023 17:21

I find the ones where people learn and demonstrate skills like Bake Off or Sewing Bee mildly diverting.

Most of the others are, as Charlie Brooker memorably put it - "wanking for coins".

CoffeeCantata · 10/12/2023 17:21

I can't bear any of them - they're either slightly embarrassing or extremely embarrassing.

Amongst the many irritants is the way the producers seem to make couples hold hands all the time. Shots of house-hunting couples walking down the street holding hands, then walking around a house holding hands. So, so twee it sets my teeth on edge!

I could write a dissertation on how awful these shows are, but I'll leave it there.

PermanentTemporary · 10/12/2023 17:22

OK I have to admit that I got thoroughly into Sort your Life Out. We all have weak spots.

Toottooot · 10/12/2023 17:23

TOWIE and its spin offs with the tacky Faiers sisters - I don’t get the hype with them and why folk fawn over them.

Roselilly36 · 10/12/2023 17:23

Love Island, so fake.

StressedOutSemolina · 10/12/2023 17:28

Love Island. Disgraceful programme and it needs to be binned.

RenoDakota · 10/12/2023 17:28

Love Bake Off, Strictly and Gogglebox. Used to like I'm a Celebrity but have developed a strong aversion to those giggling loons, Ant and Dec, after years of their same old shtick. Never liked the eating challenges anyway.
Can't stand any of the rest of them.

FrippEnos · 10/12/2023 17:30

I can't stand any of them
They are all fake and edited to give a biased view of the people in them
I haven't watched any since series 4 of BB which was just about the last one to be a social experiment and had "real" people in it instead of "characters"

bluesatin · 10/12/2023 17:30

I like Sewing Bee, but am addicted to antique shows like bargain Hunt and also weird survival shows like "Naked and Afraid" and "The Island with Bear Grylls".
