Reality tv shows you can't stand & why

shoutandpout · 09/12/2023 23:33

Can I say all of them. Ok well I don't like reality tv that exists for the point of watching people do nothing I.e gogglebox and for sake of drama ie. I'm a celebrity get me out of here, Married at first sight, made in Chelsea, towie etc- I know some people like watching these shows for whatever reason but I just don't see the point of giving these people air time and making these people famous - we've got enough z-listers out there. The only reality shows I like are usually creative competition shows like bake off, sewing bee, glow up and others like that where I can see people's creative talents on show. What do you think ? 🤔

I dislike

Made In Chelsea
Scouse wives
Cheshire Wives
The Only Way Is Essex
Dancing On Ice
Strictly Come Dancing
Survivor
Bake Off
Masterchef
The Apprentice
Pottery throw Down - (just why?!)
Sewing Bee - (again, just WHY?)
Naked and Afraid (WTAF?)
Anything focussing on one (or two) Z-lister like the Faier sisters, or Ferne McCann, or Rebecca Vardy, or Katie Price et al.

Anything with Bear Grylls - seems like a nice guy but these shows are 'meh...'

I like I'm a Celebrity
And I like Love Island
And Gogglebox
And Big Brother - really enjoyed that this year!

Hunted and Traitors are pretty good.

I have also liked Married At First Sight (MAFS) for several years. But it's getting on my tits a bit now. I don't think a single couple has stayed together after the show, and it's a bit boring to be honest. The drama in it is staged and contrived. (More than it is in the other shows IMO.) Marrying someone you have never met before is never going to end well is it? (And yes I am fully aware that this happens in certain cultures, but people in this show are not from these cultures.)

Same with Britain's Got Talent. I have liked it for many years, but have found it painfully contrived for the last few years with acts that are obviously scouted. So contrived and boring now. Last 3 or 4 seasons have been predictable and snoozeworthy IMO.

huggyduggy54 · 10/12/2023 17:33

Does anyone remember watching the villa or club reps in the 90s/2000s? Pure trash tv. Nowadays though I think there's just too many series of things, I get so bored of anything like masterchef or bake off because it's just recycling the same thing over and over

TastyLikeARaindrop · 10/12/2023 17:36

Actually, I wrote above that I don't like Love Island or other dating shows but I forgot that I embarrassingly enjoy MAFS, especially the aus version 😳
but in my defense it's essential bonding time with my dd.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 10/12/2023 17:36

It’s cheap TV, but the whole format jumped the shark at least about a decade ago.

IAmAnIdiot123 · 10/12/2023 17:38

I only like The Apprentice and shows like Antiques Roadtrip (but never thought of these shows as reality TV really)

When I was heavily pregnant I watched The Ultimatum on netflix which was absolute shite but I couldn't turn the bloody thing off. This is why I don't watch Love Island and the likes because I know I would probably get hooked and my brain is already simple enough.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 10/12/2023 17:59

Most of them, they are repetitive and it gets really boring.

About the only one I'll watch now is Pottery Throw Down.

Glasgowgal200 · 10/12/2023 18:12

Can't stand Love Island type shows, Made in Chelsea, TOWIE,

Witchcraftandhokum · 10/12/2023 18:17

I'm a Celeb. Too much animal cruelty.

gotomomo · 10/12/2023 18:21

Most of them but I will watch things where participants have a true talent eg sewing bee and the jewellery design one. Dislike celebrity versions but race across the world celebrity edition was quite good actually

Crikeyalmighty · 10/12/2023 18:24

I don't watch any --but do confess in the past to liking Wife swap and super nanny and early seasons of The apprentice

Crikeyalmighty · 10/12/2023 18:25

Oh and Hotel inspector

ToWhitToWhoo · 10/12/2023 18:28

Agree with you! The best are those which are about people learning and demonstrating a skill ('Bake Off'; 'Strictly'); but even these tend to get gossip-column-ified as they get more popular. The worst are those which set people up to have messy personal relationships under the public eye- I think the VERY worst was the original 'Big Brother'.

LindorDoubleChoc · 10/12/2023 18:30

I am extremely live and let live when it comes to TV. I fully understand why people like reality TV like Strictly Come Dancing and Britain's Got Talent and the X Factor although I would not and have never watched a single episode myself.

I'm A Celebrity - different kettle of fish. I deeply judge anyone who gets involved in that by watching. It's gross, lowest of the low, degrading to all. The modern day equivalent of hanging around the gallows or the guillotine and wanting people to suffer. I ABSOLUTELY judge there and it makes me really troubled that this is such a popular show somehow??

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 10/12/2023 18:32

I’m a Celebrity… is my least favourite reality show ever, and I agree with the PP.

Raspberrymoon49 · 10/12/2023 18:33

They’re all so formulaic, same old thing time after time, with judges, etc, just repeating same words, they’ve all had their day I think and should be binned

PTSDBarbiegirl · 10/12/2023 18:37

I hate that shows are created to attract drama personalities who the go on to provide a supply of 'celebrities' for other shows.
Love MAFS, Masterchef, Strictly, The Apprentice. Don't like The Kardashians, Love Island, Ex on the Beach, Survivor, The other one where prospective shags inspect each others genitals, RHOBH et al. My all time hate filled bile is reserved for DRAG RACE. All horrific and seem to fuel mysogyny and the notion of women and girls as sex FODDER or just a sex parody. I see the sexualisation of young gay men presented in the guise of camp, funny & 'sassy' and the same with young gay guys who see that if they don't have this look and type they must be boring and unattractive so hey presto trans creeps in, freeing the trans identifier to be outrageous, present sexy versions of what they see as more attractive and female than them. When will it end. I guess when toxic masculinity and homophobia comes to an end.

ALongHardWinter · 10/12/2023 18:40

All of them!

justaboutdonenow · 10/12/2023 18:56

All of them.

I'd probably enjoy the stuff like Bake Off but I'd still not make an effort to seek it out.

That Only Essex thing, Love Island & similar sound appalling & boring in equal measure & I'm a Celebrity is cruel to animals.

Sparehair · 10/12/2023 18:59

Slightly off topic but has anyone watched the Korean reality TV show on Netflix? It's really interesting because the tasks are really intellectually complex (not just, eat this donkey penis smoothie) and rather than it being "Hi I'm Lee. I'm a personal trainer and influencer" it's all "Hi I'm X, I'm Soon, I've got a doctorate in robotics and graduated top of my class at MIT". I just found the cultural difference interesting. I wonder would it be popular if you had a similar show here with really intelligent people on it trying to solve really tricky puzzles.

bluesatin · 10/12/2023 22:34

An ex- contestant from Drag Race was on celebrity Mastermind the other day - in full drag. He won - he has a PhD in anthropology. Should we be looking forward to a Drag Race/University Challenge crossover? 😁

BrendaMcPherson · 10/12/2023 22:51

I like
Strictly
Sewing Bee
Pottery Throw down
Bake Off

QueenBitch666 · 10/12/2023 23:15

All of them. Life's too short to watch shite

UsingChangeofName · 10/12/2023 23:18

I don't like any of them.
I don't like the whole 'contrived' situations and the fact people are just going on them to become a z-list celebrity.
I hate the fact it creates fame for people who are just famous for "being on the tele" rather than actually achieving something, or being good at something.

I do like the programmes that adopt a 'fly on the wall' documentary style and follow normal people doing actual jobs (Ambulance, 24 hrs in A&E, Air Ambulance, type programmes).

Ploctopus · 10/12/2023 23:34

I don’t watch any reality tv but the only one I’m really enraged by is I’m a Celebrity because they treat animals so badly. It’s a total disgrace imo.

EtiennePalmiere · 10/12/2023 23:38

I hate them all except come dine with me.
