To sneak McD's into the cinema

fr4zzledmum · 09/12/2023 16:03

Going to a tea time showing tonight - McD's is right next door to the cinema so was just going to buy DC a Happy Meal and pop it in my bag to eat when we get in there.

Cheaper than a hot dog at the cinema. I don't think it's particularly a bother smell wise, as people have nachos and hot dogs etc.

AIBU?

Not it’s chavvy and selfish. Most cinemas don’t allow hot food because of safety, cleanliness and smells, I’d love to know what cinemas have hot nachos and hotdogs.

As has been already pointed out, Everyman serve food to your actual seat (well sofa). They are not chavvy at all, in fact they are more expensive than other cinemas and that actually reduces the chav factor that I have experienced in some other cinemas.

@TheCadoganArms

But McDonald’s doesn’t have a strong smell like garlic does it? And what’s the difference but nuggets and fries from McDonald’s rather than the cinema?

Cant get over out outraged people are about it, been up for 2 nights with the baby and this thread has really made me laugh like I’m knacked but don’t mind a 10 minute smell of food 😂

As evidenced on this thread plenty of folk think Maccie Ds does have a strong smell and to varying degrees they find it an umplesent distraction. Given that McDonalds spend millions on R&D to specifically make their food to strongly smell a certain way and for said smell to linger for longer its hardly surprising when...erm....people in the vacinity can pick up on it when you tuck into a bigmac or whatever. You have no issue with it, great, good for you, plenty of others are not so enamoured with fast food smells (and the associated noises of consuming it) while at the cinema. Yeah I can buy a hotdog or nachos down my local odeon, I just don't as I think it is not fair on the person next to me listen to me eat it. Just because something is allowed does not necessarily mean it is right but I doubt we are going to agree on that front. I shall keep going to my local independent where I can enjoy a film with a glass of wine without the risk of someone nearby tucking into a KFC or pizza.

@TheCadoganArms au contraire its lucky for those that only have one option, if they can eat and watch!

I'm alright Jack

Behindyouiam · 10/12/2023 11:11

@TheCadoganArms exactly!! We are all happy doing what we want! You don't control me, if I visit a cinema offering food, I will use it... thanks!

And that is the problem right there.

"I'm going to do what I want"

Behindyouiam · 10/12/2023 11:20

@TheCadoganArms are you seriously trying to tell me that I'm not allowed to eat food, fully within the rules of the cinema? Because I may have the misfortune of sitting next to someone who doesn't like the rules?

Don't go then!

Simple.

sunglassesonthetable · 10/12/2023 11:27

When the OP asked if she could take a Happy Meal in she wasn't talking about a Big Mac.

There are no sauces, no mayo, and def no onions as it is aimed at kids.

It is a small dry burger, probably made of cardboard and sized like an amuse bouche. Plus a little carton of dry bendy fries. The word crispy does apply. The nugget option would consist of equally cardboard nuggets.

The actual smell is minimal.

sunglassesonthetable · 10/12/2023 11:28

There is a drink, smallish, with ice and a straw but we haven't got as far as disallowing them yet.

Perhapsanorhertimewouldbebetter · 10/12/2023 11:29

'Sized like an 'amuse bouche''.

Peak MN.

Really inconsiderate, please don’t.

sunglassesonthetable · 10/12/2023 11:35

I'd argue that a Happy Meal doesn't really smell at all. As it's basically cardboard.

Certainly not as much as as nachos and hot dogs that the cinema sell.

So crack on.

My position is fairly clear, I think eating hot smelly food in the auditorium is pretty antisocial and where possible I avoid cinemas that offer that as an option. As alluded to already I am fortunate that i have a few cinemas near me that have house rules that prevent this. Others living elsewhere are not so lucky so have to put up with the screw you crowd.

sunglassesonthetable · 10/12/2023 11:37

As well as not being smelly I doubt wether a Happy Meal is particularly hot. Especially by the time you got it into the cinema.

OhpoorMe · 09/12/2023 16:16

God this thread. How do people cope in life.

It's fine, it's a happy meal not a fistful of joints and a smoked fish.

This!

What a precious lot.

sunglassesonthetable · 10/12/2023 11:43

Tbh people enjoying the film " with a glass of wine" probably aren't at the tea time showing. of a kids film with a hangry pre schooler in tow, which is where this thread started.

So really I wouldn't be worrying about the small cardboard contents of a Happy Meal.

fliptopbin · 10/12/2023 11:46

If I ruled the world, food would not be consumed in public. Take your stinking and chomping and do it in the privacy of your own home or car. At least with cafes I have a choice as to whether to go in, but cinemas, or public transport..just utterly vile. Even without the smell, its the fucking chomping. It makes me so stabby.

We are simply debating cinema etiquette. It's almost like people can be irritated by various things without it being a major stumbling block in their day to day lives. I don't like people playing music loudly on their phones while on public transport either yet somehow despite finding it annoying, I can hold down a professional job, deal with elderly parents, travel abroad, drive a car etc without becoming a hysterical mess.

budgiegirl · 10/12/2023 11:47

I’d love to know what cinemas have hot nachos and hotdogs - most of the major chains - Cineworld, Vue, Odeon etc and have done for a long time. I can remember buying nachos at the cinema 30 years ago. Even our smaller, posher, independent cinema sells them.

My local cinema sells them - well, the nachos, not sure about hot dogs - but you can’t take them into the screening. You need to have them at the cinema bar/cafe.

TheCadoganArms · 10/12/2023 10:51

Well credit to them for advertising said in cinema meal, I can at least make an informed decision as to whether want to sit next to someone enjoying a 'feast'. Thankfully I live in London where I have a decent choice of cinemas (chain and independents) all of which have different policies on food so I can pick a place that does not try to double up as a restaurant. It's poor sods who have just one local cinema that I feel sorry for.

Only having one local cinema is the biggest first world problem I've ever heard.

Not at OP's local or mine.

So no ice clinking or straw sucking noises that could " offend ". Even better. 👍🏻

Fionaville · 10/12/2023 11:57

It's a done thing in our local cinema, McDs is next door to it. Seems to be mostly a daytime/happy meal for the kids thing though. It wouldn't bother me in the slightest. It's just a food smell.
