To sneak McD's into the cinema

Going to a tea time showing tonight - McD's is right next door to the cinema so was just going to buy DC a Happy Meal and pop it in my bag to eat when we get in there.

Cheaper than a hot dog at the cinema. I don't think it's particularly a bother smell wise, as people have nachos and hot dogs etc.

This thread is so weird.

Surely if a Happy Meal is a treat that means the child normally doesn't eat them. They are a treat for me and I haven't eaten one for over two years.

I only eat sweets in the Cinema (and have done for more years than most of you have been alive) and can remember we never took sweets with rattly wrapping. However given the volume of the soundtrack these days I don't think that would be an issue. I accept the selling of overpriced food keeps the film prices down

We only go to the Cinemas with the luxury seats so there's room for people to pass without everyone standing up, not like the old days of tip up seats. And if you book on line it's possible to have almost zero interaction with any of the rare members of staff.

Well, the large Odeon chain is very clear. It names some branches where you can’t bring in any food from outside. And of those that do allow it:

“We do not allow the following to be brought in from outside the cinema:

  • Heated food
  • Pungent food
  • Alcoholic drinks”

McDonalds really smells. I hate it when someone gets on the train with one, but then I’m only on the train for 10mins. Would hate it for 2+ hours.

Yes, it’s a horrible smell. It’s weird nowadays that people can’t go for a few hours without eating.

Transport, cinemas etc - they are like cows, constantly needing to chew the cud.🙄

Assuming this is to me, nobody is disputing that many cinemas ban hot food not purchased at the actual cinema from being taken in. But in this post:

you seemed to be doubting that any food at all was allowed into the viewing area, when you said But you don’t do the eating in the actual screening. My local cinema has a very popular bar and cafe-restaurant. You eat there first, or later, not during the actual film. You would be escorted out, I think, but I’ve never seen anyone do it. in response to someone saying that the cinema made most of its money by selling food rather than tickets.

McDonald's absolutely stinks. I think this would be really anti social behaviour.

Hibernatalie · 09/12/2023 16:11

I've done this before and been in the cinema many times when others have done it. Totally fine.

It really isn't.

This thread is hilarious 🤣

Since when did McDonald’s smell bad ffs this thread has confirmed that people just like to be awkward on mumsnet because anything can cause such an ordeal 😂😂😂

Itsbritneybitch22 · 10/12/2023 09:52

@TheCadoganArms

Drug dealing a great British hobby 😂

And having sex stop it this is so funny.

Princessandthepea0 · 10/12/2023 09:56

Not it’s chavvy and selfish. Most cinemas don’t allow hot food because of safety, cleanliness and smells, I’d love to know what cinemas have hot nachos and hotdogs.

Not really, just because you have no issue with Maccie D smells at the cinema does not mean everyone else who does are 'wrong'. I quite like the smell of garlic when I walk into a French or Italian restaurant, does not mean I particularly want to smell it in the cinema. Time and a place and all that.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 10/12/2023 09:59

I think McDs does smell more than the food they sell at the cinema- but I also don’t think hot food should be going in at all. I think giving yourselves time to eat first is the answer! The adverts and trailers take enough time to eat a McDs!

Bringing your own popcorn or sweets is totally fine in my view though.

I think, just maybe, that guide was put together with the view of conveying a more serious message in a humorous way. Kind of assumed that was obvious.

Perhapsanorhertimewouldbebetter · 10/12/2023 10:01

How exactly would you be 'sneaking 'something that absolutely stinks and is noisy to eat?
Don't be that person.

It doesn’t necessarily smell bad, but you shouldn’t eat hot, smelly food in the cinema. It’s just common sense and basic good manners that most civilised people understand.

It does smell bad to many people, myself included. Is it about being awkward or considerate? In your case, awkward as long as you're ok.

Odeon does....

Chips and chicken strips as well 😋

@TheCadoganArms

But McDonald’s doesn’t have a strong smell like garlic does it? And what’s the difference but nuggets and fries from McDonald’s rather than the cinema?

Cant get over out outraged people are about it, been up for 2 nights with the baby and this thread has really made me laugh like I’m knacked but don’t mind a 10 minute smell of food 😂

Itsbritneybitch22 · 10/12/2023 10:47

@Mercurial123

No I can’t get worked up over a child eating a happy meal that might give a smell off for 5/10 minutes … it’s a happy meal not a dog shit taco.

Well credit to them for advertising said in cinema meal, I can at least make an informed decision as to whether want to sit next to someone enjoying a 'feast'. Thankfully I live in London where I have a decent choice of cinemas (chain and independents) all of which have different policies on food so I can pick a place that does not try to double up as a restaurant. It's poor sods who have just one local cinema that I feel sorry for.

Behindyouiam · 10/12/2023 11:01

@TheCadoganArms au contraire its lucky for those that only have one option, if they can eat and watch!

This is the bit that is missing for many now. We’re not arguing about whether it is a scientifically provable fact that hot food in an enclosed space is disgusting to 100% of people in that space. It’s more recognising that a lot of people don’t like it, even if, no, it won’t kill them and you personally don’t mind, and refraining out of consideration.

Public spaces are becoming more unpleasant because of the insistence that if other people don’t like what you’re doing, the problem is with them and they should stay at home.

What I really like is how if you are someone who objects to all this stuff, you get mocked and belittled on threads like this. The loud and imposing have won - they could at least be magnanimous about it!
