Adults who don't dress properly for winter

Driving me mad.
I work in an office where must people have a commute or a decent walk to get to work . I'd say about 90% can't dress themselves properly.
Young woman next to me ankle trainer socks. Midriff showing. Pissing and moaning about being cold. It's 1 degree outside and it's December.
It's raining and they come in wearing canvas shoes and a fluffy coat. No umbrella or waterproofs. Then expect to have the heating on full whack all day to dry their coats and shoes out.
In a training room all day where the lead trainer (middle aged, old enough to know better) insisted on having the heating cranked up all day because she's wearing a thin acrylic jumper and got cold to the bones on the way to work and can't warm up.
Everyone without exception has access to the weather forecast via their phones. It shouldn't be a shock when it's raining or cold. Yet they dress like it's May, all year round.
They earn decent money and aren't hard up so it's not a financial issue (maybe with some of the VERY junior/ young ones fair enough )

AIBU to fed up of people moaning about being cold or wet but making zero attempt to dress appropriately for the weather ?

That must severely restrict how much time you spend outside. We walk in light drizzle and cold all the time. It starts and stops so I don't see how you can avoid it unless you only go outside on clear days.

RampantIvy · 09/12/2023 23:06

i don't even own a coat! Hate the way they look

How shallow and vain.

im happy to not go out in the rain and cold is just more layers of jumpers/scarfs. I dont think anyone goes out in that if they dont have to!

Edited

Its quite normal to go out for walks in the cold, and whatever weather that occurs, otherwise you'd never go for walks in the winter which wouldn't be healthy.

It affects me because they're whinging all day about being cold which is annoying / tedious to listen to, and cranking the heating up to unbearable levels to try and thaw out.

This. It is OP’s business because she has to put up with an overheated office and whinging colleagues. As for their being unable to afford warm winter clothes, Primark has plenty.

@Maireas

when you go to a restaurant you don’t want to sit eating dinner in a coat though do you ?

No indeed I don't, and never have.
I still don't know who Sharon is.

Maireas · 10/12/2023 06:37

@LuckySantangelo35 - I think you meant to quote the other poster!

I never said i dont go out when its cold and light drizzle would be fine. i still wouldnt wear a coat in those situations. just a couple of jumpers and a scarf maybe. i wouldnt go out in pouring rain or snow for example (who would unless they had too?)

im assuming this was aimed at me? I dont believe its shallow or vain. Im allowed to not like the way an item of clothing makes me look/feel. I like coats on other people just not on myself. Not really sure what your issue is?

Trufflemarmite · 10/12/2023 09:06

I am feeling a bit sad for the posters on here who don’t have a coat, don’t go out for walks in bad weather and have never learned about warm layers and basic protection. Surely a lot of it is basic science that anyone gets from school? Or even just being generally informed about life?! I guess I have been lucky to grow up in part by the sea, where you very quickly learn things like how to avoid wind chill, and later to work in the outdoor industry in Cumbria where you also very quickly learn about the best ways to stay warm and dry. No wonder we are such an unhealthy nation if some people think it is normal to sit at home in winter heating the house to 22 degrees. If you can afford that you can certainly afford merino wool and a winter coat! I am also shocked by the disregard for the effect on the climate shown by some posters.

People go out in the snow because snow is fun! Its also pretty fun to go out in pouring rain when you're dressed properly. Light drizzle is actually the worst weather to go out in, its miserable and finds its way in everywhere somehow, and doesn't have the nicer characteristics of proper rain or snow.

haha - i dont like the snow or pouring rain so think we can just agree to disagree on that one

Natsku · 10/12/2023 09:58

If you have children though then surely you'd have to go out in the rain and snow because they'll want to go out and play in it, even though you don't like it.

I was thinking that. I would hate to be sitting in a playground without a proper coat!

Yeah, I’ve never worked in a warm school either.

Lulu49 · 10/12/2023 11:45

Well he obviously doesn't feel the cold, why does that make him a dickhead? We are all different.

Snow, yes, but mine's never asked to go out when it's raining. She just accepts it's a rainy day so we're staying in.

If you have painful joints when you get cold and/or damp then layers don't help, especially if that pain comes into your hands and fingers.

I do but run warm everywhere else so being too warm is harder for me to cope with than being cold.

You never take her out to splash in puddles and run around in the rain? To me, that's missing out on a very fun part of childhood - even my 12 year old, who normally refuses to go outside unless she has to, comes running out to run around in the rain if there's a sudden downpour.

WhatNoRaisins · 10/12/2023 17:06

Not all kids are fans of splashing in puddles in my experience. That said I'd have thought there would be times where you just have to go out with kids whatever the weather is doing.

Cloudisi · 10/12/2023 17:56

Puddles, yes, though that's usually after rain. Not all kids enjoy being in rain.
