Adults who don't dress properly for winter

Bearpawk · 06/12/2023 21:41

Driving me mad.
I work in an office where must people have a commute or a decent walk to get to work . I'd say about 90% can't dress themselves properly.
Young woman next to me ankle trainer socks. Midriff showing. Pissing and moaning about being cold. It's 1 degree outside and it's December.
It's raining and they come in wearing canvas shoes and a fluffy coat. No umbrella or waterproofs. Then expect to have the heating on full whack all day to dry their coats and shoes out.
In a training room all day where the lead trainer (middle aged, old enough to know better) insisted on having the heating cranked up all day because she's wearing a thin acrylic jumper and got cold to the bones on the way to work and can't warm up.
Everyone without exception has access to the weather forecast via their phones. It shouldn't be a shock when it's raining or cold. Yet they dress like it's May, all year round.
They earn decent money and aren't hard up so it's not a financial issue (maybe with some of the VERY junior/ young ones fair enough )

AIBU to fed up of people moaning about being cold or wet but making zero attempt to dress appropriately for the weather ?

Try knee length socks or put a pair of tights on.

That sounds really uncomfortable, especially under skinny jeans or leggings!

@PinkSparklyPussyCat I've attached the link below 😊

www.gooutdoors.co.uk/16268860/salomon-womens-barrakee-shoe-16268860

I went in store to buy as I had to try them on and ensure there was enough support in the shoe before buying. Fortunately the store assistant was very patient as I had to try on 10 pairs of different shoes before I could find the right fit 😁
I also had to size up to accommodate orthotics for plantar fascilitis.

Good luck 💐

Thank you for the link, they look promising as I have to have fairly firm soles.

Im sorry for being snappy in my first reply to you 💐

I was much warmer in my teenage years. I remember walking to school in the 6th form, having had a brisk 2 mile uphill walk under the weight of hefty A-level textbooks and folders and stripping to my t-shirt on a cold, sharp, frosty morning. The teacher on duty passed comment about my lack of clothes but there was literally steam coming off my sweaty arms. After about 5-10 mins indoors I had to layer back up.

I like layers as my body temperature changes a lot between moving/ being sedentary.

For work, it was often cold in the mornings but warmed up through the day. I'd wear vest, shirt, v-neck jumper, and a long cardigan, knee length socks and trousers. It gave flexibility as the temperature changed.

I've been verbally abused in the street because my sensory child was wearing shorts in 1⁰C... the thick bare-headed skinhead didn't register the thick coat, gloves and hat. DS was perfectly happy- I'd certainly know about it if he wasn't! On thermal imaging cameras, he shows up blazing white, compared to me and his brother so he is genuinely hotter than us despite less clothing. On the other hand, in hot weather he still wears his thick fluffy jumper (there is one specific tolerated type) to protect him from the heat, and he prefers the predictable feel of his own body heat to variable external heat.

His school uniform is shirt and blazer. No option for jumpers. He will wear a waterproof/ light coat in extreme weather, but the lack of clothing tolerated in school doesn't seem to bother him. He has to walk 10 mins from where he's dropped off/ picked up or catch the bus and walk a mile.

I don't care what people choose wear as long as they don't repeatedly whinge about it.

Blossomingx · 08/12/2023 14:03

@SisterMichaelsHabit hehe I wonder what a wooden jumper looks like

Greenhouse12 · 08/12/2023 14:25

Not to be rude but are you menopausal?

there was nothing worse than when I was younger and a menopausal woman was the lead admin in charge of how hot the office was.

she was roasting all the time whilst everyone else was freezing! I do think I dress appropriately but it’s not business dress to walk around in a jumper or hoodie.

newrubylane · 08/12/2023 14:31

If you're too warm take one of your many many layers off?

There was a woman I used to work with who'd sit there in a cardigan and insist on opening a window when we were all freezing. The rest of us would end up working in our coats. I bought a little desktop heater because she couldn't control what I did with that and I was fed up of not being able to type properly because my hands were cold.

A couple of winters ago I saw TV report on the news (I think) where a guy suggested that a room for sitting in should be warm enough for you to comfortable wear one long sleeved layer. If you can't, it's too cold. So unless your colleagues are coming in I. T-shirts, your probably overdoing it on the layers and then expecting them all to freeze.

No worries @PinkSparklyPussyCat I really hope your foot recovers soon. 💐. Foot pain is like toothache.
I had a steroid jab for my foot two days ago which hurt like hell, hence my crankiness yesterday 🙃

Your colleagues do sound remarkably dim! However, I have spent every day this week wearing my cashmere jumpers, trousers, socks, leather boots.... proper warm grown-up clothes, but because my office is in a freezing Victorian building, and I spend a lot of my day sitting still in meetings in said Victorian building, I am really cold and I am getting ill 🤬. Seriously considering an Oodie for meetings!

Maybe also add a down gilet, soft wool pashmina wrapped round your neck/shoulders plus fingerless gloves/wrist warmers. As for socks, wear wool or fleece socks or ankle warmers inside your boots. I often found that, even if I was wearing socks and warm boots my ankles were like ice unless I added another layer there. 🌹

ThinWomansBrain · 08/12/2023 15:52

I bought a long sleeved thermal vest in primark for about £12, it's fab.

So impressed I bought a couple more - online, from Damart, about £16 each. Roasting, too hot & had to take it off in the afternoon.
Makes tops I'd usually only wear in summer feasible all year round.

In my 20's a skirt suit & court shoes were required in the office.

My thoughts exactly, well for most things.

You don’t have to afford North face and Timberland to keep warm in winter. Primark have plenty of cheap fleeces, jumpers and teddy coats, which certainly don’t cost much money. I saw an older man in my village last week when it was 2° and he was walking around in shorts. A young girl, waiting for the school bus on the same morning, had no coat, and I also saw a child walking to the local co-op in slippers night clothes and some sort of pull on robe with bare legs. I agree they are all knobheads. However it just isn’t cool to dress for the winter. Many people watch Australian soaps or other soaps set in the sunshine and want to look like the actors, hence the ridiculous summer attire, when the temperatures are near zero. Having said all that, in my younger days, we wore mini skirts and 15 denier tights with short coats too. Did I freeze my butt off going to work? Of course, but I was soooo trendy.

Nomum1980 · 08/12/2023 19:05

It’s quite easy to check the weather forecast each day before you decide on a outfit for work etc , it will always be a issue in a office environment where some people are too hot/cold , I suffer with hyperhidrosis and I am always too warm I really struggle in the office summer is a nightmare for me and winter isn’t much better and to be honest it doesn’t really matter what I wear I’m still sweating 😰 buckets.

Glasgowgal200 · 08/12/2023 19:06

Its the same when it's snowy/icy and I see women wearing high heels - put it this way - they wouldn't get any sympathy from me if they slipped and broke something if they couldn't wear suitable footwear

Oh bless you, one of the people who can’t get their head around people who choose to dress differently from them saying it’s because of a failure of imagination or intelligence. That’s so funny.

Oh bless you, one of the people who can't be bothered to read things properly. The poster was replying to someone asking how people can afford merino and other quality clothing for the winter!!! What has choosing to dress differently got to do with it?

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 08/12/2023 19:18

KimberleyClark · 08/12/2023 09:38

Many years ago I worked with someone who never wore tights even in the depths of winter. She was a bit eccentric though.

Many years ago I worked with someone who wore thick black tights to work every single day - right through an NZ summer!!!

No, I read the whole thing and totally stand by everything I said. You’re choosing to ignore the previous comment (or can’t be bothered reading properly)

NotaWhiteRefridgerator · 08/12/2023 20:20

I am autistic and rarely dress appropriately for the weather. I don’t know if it is a sensory thing, or struggling to change from wearing the type of clothes I’d worn in the previous season.

RampantIvy · 08/12/2023 20:23

I hope you don't mind me asking @NotaWhiteRefridgerator, but if you don't like the feel of material next to your skin would you rather feel cold or do you just not feel the cold as much?

ineedsun · 08/12/2023 20:24

You’re fine @NotaWhiteRefridgerator anyone who makes a judgement is not worth giving a second thought to. Wear what you want with confidence.

NotaWhiteRefridgerator · 08/12/2023 20:29

@RampantIvy Generally speaking, I run at a higher body temperature than everyone else I know. Sometimes I don’t realise I’m cold until I am absolutely freezing.
I have a padded jacket that is really good quality, but after wearing it for a few minutes, I overheat and need to take it off. Whether it was raining, or snowing, I’ll the consequences of walking in that over overheating in my jacket.

NotaWhiteRefridgerator · 08/12/2023 20:30

@ineedsun Thank you ☺️

Cloudisi · 08/12/2023 20:35

I wear trainer socks with trainers in this weather. But then I don't complain I'm cold because I'm not. Went out the other day in a big coat, jumper, long dress with bare legs.. was sweaty and hot by the time I'd been walking for a while.

Cloudisi · 08/12/2023 20:38

Some people don't get as cold as others. I enjoy these temperatures, I detest summer, I naturally feel warmer than most. I don't have my heating on, I like a window open even now. I find if I have a big coat and jumper on and tights too that I'm overheating, a breeze on the legs gives a nice balance to a warm upper half

Sennelier1 · 08/12/2023 21:34

It's probably the Scandinavian part in my bloodline talking but I álways dress in layers, even in summer. A light top, a thin sweater, a heavier 'oodie, an outdoors'jacket, you name it, I'll have it on me ór pull it out of my tote bag 😊
