Adults who don't dress properly for winter

Driving me mad.
I work in an office where must people have a commute or a decent walk to get to work . I'd say about 90% can't dress themselves properly.
Young woman next to me ankle trainer socks. Midriff showing. Pissing and moaning about being cold. It's 1 degree outside and it's December.
It's raining and they come in wearing canvas shoes and a fluffy coat. No umbrella or waterproofs. Then expect to have the heating on full whack all day to dry their coats and shoes out.
In a training room all day where the lead trainer (middle aged, old enough to know better) insisted on having the heating cranked up all day because she's wearing a thin acrylic jumper and got cold to the bones on the way to work and can't warm up.
Everyone without exception has access to the weather forecast via their phones. It shouldn't be a shock when it's raining or cold. Yet they dress like it's May, all year round.
They earn decent money and aren't hard up so it's not a financial issue (maybe with some of the VERY junior/ young ones fair enough )

AIBU to fed up of people moaning about being cold or wet but making zero attempt to dress appropriately for the weather ?

*most people, not must people!

While I agree to an extent, I would expect the place to be warm enough to not have to wear an oodie.

gamerchick · 06/12/2023 21:45

While I agree it sounds as if you cant beat him then join them and dress for the heating cranked up all day.

Nospecialcharactersplease · 06/12/2023 21:47

Fully agree, though it took me until me 30s to understand/afford weather-appropriate clothes. Nobody told me, and you don’t know what you don’t know! Couldn’t think of anything worse than freezing my tits off now though and get very smug when I pull out my snow boots.

LynetteScavo · 06/12/2023 21:48

YANBU

I wear an long sleeve top under a wooden jumper. I don't respond to people in a t-shirt and blazer who inform me it's cold. Yes, the weather is cold, so I dressed appropriately for it. I don't need to heat the room to 25'C to compensate for the weather outside.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 06/12/2023 21:49

YAB a bit U, it's not really any of your business how other people choose to die of hypothermia dress.

PonyPatter44 · 06/12/2023 21:49

Your colleagues do sound remarkably dim! However, I have spent every day this week wearing my cashmere jumpers, trousers, socks, leather boots.... proper warm grown-up clothes, but because my office is in a freezing Victorian building, and I spend a lot of my day sitting still in meetings in said Victorian building, I am really cold and I am getting ill 🤬. Seriously considering an Oodie for meetings!

SisterMichaelsHabit · 06/12/2023 21:51

I really want this to not be a typo and for you to actually have a jumper made of oak or the mighty Scots pine.

Nothankyou22 · 06/12/2023 21:51

I sit all day in my thermals and coat due to crappy insulated building. I’d kill to dress nice for the office but I dress for warmth

Naptrappedmummy · 06/12/2023 21:52

Young people don’t want to schlep around in anoraks and wellies OP. I bet you didn’t in your early 20s. As for the rest of it I’ll be told I’m daft but I think dressing for the weather AND work is quite difficult. A cold dog walk, no problem - thick hoodie, thick leggings, coat over the top. A freezing office? Errr… work trousers and what? You can end up with 5 pairs of work shoes just to fit the weather as well as thermals etc and not everyone has the money or space for all that.

NorthernSpirit · 06/12/2023 21:52

Totally agree with you. This really pisses me off.

Man in town today (2 degrees) wearing shorts, t shirt and flip flops). Knobhead was a word that sprung to mind when I saw him.

I on the other hand was wearing a thermal vest, merino wool jumper, North Face jacket and Timberland knee high boots. I felt very snug & toasty.

How many people can afford merino wool, North Face and Timberlands as a staple do you think? And enough to rotate and wear every day for a few weeks of cold weather?

Yanbu. I've known adult colleagues who drive to work in winter without a coat. It fascinates me.
I walk in so have to deal with the elements and make sure I'm layered up in the office in case the stupid air con is still on.

My point is, it's not a freezing office at all. It's warm to start with then they want EXTRA heating on cranked up to 22 degrees and more because they've got cold to the bones on the way to work because they're dressed for summer.

I'll be wearing thermals and layers and take off the extras when I get into the nice warm office.

Erm. It's common sense isn't it?

Bearpawk · 06/12/2023 21:56

It's definitely an age thing too, I didn't have the inclination or resources so buy thermal vests or wool socks when I was younger.
But lots of these are Middle Aged folk who earn well. One of the worst offenders is!

Young people aren’t famed for common sense.

Unbego · 06/12/2023 21:57

How does it affect you OP?

22 is on the cool side for an office in winter ime, depending on where the thermostat is.

Mum2jenny · 06/12/2023 21:57

YABU OP, many people keep their houses above 22 degrees and wear clothes to suit that temperature. I don’t, but many do. Where I work, the temperatures are really low, around 17 degrees and the whinging is rather excessive

NigelHarmansNewWife · 06/12/2023 21:44

The office is very warm, too hot because they seem to dress for summer so need the heating cranked up to defrost and dry out when they get in.

mrlistersgelfbride · 06/12/2023 21:59

You are correct, however I was like this in my 20s. I didn't dress for warmth and wanted to look good so used to go out in little dresses and jackets and freeze!
Doesn't everyone do this?!

It's only the last few years (since early to mid 30s) I've worn proper winter clothes.

gamerchick · 06/12/2023 22:00

22 degrees is the cusp of warm enough for an office in single figure temps OP.

It affects me because they're whinging all day about being cold which is annoying / tedious to listen to, and cranking the heating up to unbearable levels to try and thaw out.

The office is very warm to you.

Chalkdowns · 06/12/2023 22:01

I totally agree with you but the high streets are full of thin clothes. It’s hard to buy proper warm ones especially for kids. It’s all so cheap and unwarm
