To feel queasy every time MIL says...

We drink alternative milk in our house as we prefer the taste. The kids drink oat, almond and soya milk when at home and don't know any different.

When we are at MIL's house, she always offers the kids a glass of cows milk (not sure why) and she calls it "granny's milk".

AIBU to feel queasy every time she says "Who wants some of Granny's milk?" 😅(Can't find a vomit emoji)

Thought my mil was bad, she buys hard butter - as in - no rapeseed oil added, as do we I might add. But calls it grandmas best butter - it’s Sainsbury’s salted get over yourself love!!

Awww granny bitty 😂

If my MIL could have convinced my ex-husband to do this, she would have been a happy woman! 😂😂😂

You're contradicting yourself here though. Seems you are opposed to vegetarian/vegan diets as humans are naturally omnivorous and therefore biologically intended to eat a diet that includes meat?
But then you advocate drinking cows' milk, a substance not biologically intended for humans whatsoever. We are the only mammalian species that drinks the milk of another species and the only species that includes milk of any kind in our diet beyond natural weaning age.
In reality, I don't think the modern Western diet bears much resemblance to what a natural human diet is supposed to be and hasn't done so for a very long time. We eat what we like, what we have available and what we can afford but very little of it is truly "natural". If people get to choose to drink cows' milk surely they also get to choose not to eat meat too? There are lots of pros and cons of course, but if you're going to take the stance that humans should eat meat because we are biologically omnivorous then logically you should also say that we shouldn't drink the milk of other species as we are not biologically designed to do that either.

Well not at all if you know any human history. For between 5 and 10 thousand years we have drunk cows milk. It has many many nutrients not least calcium and full fat milk makes up a large chunk of calories in under 5. It is technically counted as food not drink. You cannot replace those nutritionally with oats / soy beans and water.

Boomboom22 · 07/12/2023 17:53

Ie if we didn't drink cows milk we would need to breastfeed to 5 yrs old generally. We have evolved not to need to do this. Due to our use of other mammals milk.

GoonieGang · 07/12/2023 17:56

I think you dislike your MIL. I may be wrong but it comes across like that.

Newsenmum · 06/12/2023 17:30

Why oh why doesn’t she call it cow’s milk? 🤢

Or better still, just call it ordinary milk. There's no insinuated message there.🙂

My elderly mother used to (they don't sell it anymore) buy beef tongue from the butchers and have it in a sandwich.

I'll never forget taking DH round to hers when we were very newly together and her shouting from the kitchen 'Does [DH] want some tongue?'

He nearly spat his tea out and i ... well, i could have died. We still laugh about it 16 years on 😂

😂😂😂

I think you are being a little bit silly

I think she’s being extremely sensible 😂 It’s pukey enough to be funny but also has that passive aggressive undertone from Granny about faddy modern milk.

Formula milk is made from cow's milk

Yes? But not oat milk which is the subject of this thread. Formula or breast then.

greenbeansnspinach · 07/12/2023 18:28

One of my daughters when little used to go next door and they used sterilised milk. She came home and said she’d had “donkey milk”.

Puffling235 · 07/12/2023 18:28

This would originally have raised a small giggle from me but honestly there's a nasty undertone and it's a bit yuck to see everyone posting photos and clips of these misogynistic idiots that set breastfeeding back so far. They really should be left in the past. They are far more embarrassing than 'granny'!

I also take her point, you are consuming UPFs and sound a bit smug about it. Probably just wants to offer them some proper nutrition.

But her turn of phrase is... unfortunate...!

Unkind of you to post it on the internet though.

Yabvvu for giving your kids alternative products that are not actually good for them or the planet when they could drink healthy full fat cows milk for good bone and teeth development. Same for vegan or veggie kids. It's inappropriate to push that on to kids when we are omnivores.
Do agree about granny milk though.

Dairy alternatives are perfectly healthy for children, as are vegetarian/vegan diets. My son is vegan and his paediatrician has no problem with it because it’s pretty easy to get all your nutrients on a plant based diet! Personally I wish my parents hadn’t pushed meat on me as a child, I always found it repulsive. When I stopped drinking dairy I felt miles better. Oh, and cows’ milk is also the absolute worst kind of milk for the planet.

I agree with you. Oat milk is not milk. It's a vitamin drink

My own MIL was always trying to feed my children all kinds of stuff I didn't like them to have, with the explanation it never hurt my DH growing up. And then he would answer that she never fed that to him, that times had changed and that she shouldn't give the children stuff full of colourings and palmfat. Apart from that, I think your post is hilarious OP 🤩

MrsAvocet · 07/12/2023 18:51

Boomboom22 · 07/12/2023 17:53

Ie if we didn't drink cows milk we would need to breastfeed to 5 yrs old generally. We have evolved not to need to do this. Due to our use of other mammals milk.

And we still can breastfeed for as long as needed if we wish to - I did. Neither of my dairy allergic (not intolerant) offspring ever got any of their calcium or calories from cows' milk and they are both healthy adults now.
We generally have the choice not to breastfeed because we can use alternatives now. Just as people have the choice whether they eat meat or other animal derived products.
For what it is worth, I consume both meat and dairy and have no problems with either, but I also don't see any problem with people making different choices. There are multiple different diets that can meet out nutritional needs.
Cows' milk is convenient. And tasty, especially, in my opinion, when it's made into cheese or chocolate. But it is still not an essential part of the human diet. There is nothing useful in cows milk that is not found elsewhere.
You believe it is a less processed and more nutritionally complete alternative compared to many other options and I don't disagree, having spent the last 20 odd years making sure my sons do get enough calcium without using dairy produce. There are valid arguments in favour of dairy produce as part of our diet, but "it's natural" isn't really one of them. It is traditional yes - in our society at least - and the social norm but it is not the biological norm.
And we haven't actually evolved terribly well when it comes to cows' milk have we? It's true that those of Northern European descent are better at handling it than large chunks of the rest of the species on account of the historical eating habits of our forefathers but cows' milk protein is still one of the commonest dietary allergens and varying degrees of lactose intolerance are still pretty common in the adult population. It would be fairer to say that we are still evolving to tolerate dairy.
I wouldn't have commented had you not chosen to castigate vegetarians and vegans for going against biology in the same post as promoting dairy consumption. If we have the option to use other animals' milk as a substitute for our own, thanks to human ingenuity, then why can those who prefer not to eat meat not do the same? It may be harder to obtain all necessary nutrients without meat and a quick glance at the human alimentary system does indeed tell us we are biologically intended to be omnivorous but it is perfectly possible to have a healthy, meat free diet. Not my personal choice, but millions of people across the world do so without problems.

Why does your son need a paediatrician?

He sees a paediatrician once or twice a year because they suspect he has autism, why do you ask?

jannier · 07/12/2023 19:01

Just tell her it sounds like she's offering her breast milk.

We haven’t evolved due to the use of cow’s milk 😂

Humans lose their ability to latch at around 5. Adult teeth come in around the same time. It is ‘natural’ to breastfeed for an extended period of time.

Natural weaning age is around 5 years old WORLDWIDE.

There is no biological, evolutionary impetus to come off the boob because you know other dairy is available.

Behaviours have changed. We haven’t ‘evolved’

(FWIW I’ve got zero skin in this game)

Boomboom22 · 07/12/2023 19:16

Do some reading then, we literally have adapted over thousands of years to gain more and more nutrients from other mammals milk.

pollymere · 07/12/2023 19:26

Of course, she could just call it "milk". It's alluding to being her breast milk otherwise 🤢

If she desperately needed to she could call it "cows'".
