To feel queasy every time MIL says...

MommaTonda · 06/12/2023 16:47

We drink alternative milk in our house as we prefer the taste. The kids drink oat, almond and soya milk when at home and don't know any different.

When we are at MIL's house, she always offers the kids a glass of cows milk (not sure why) and she calls it "granny's milk".

AIBU to feel queasy every time she says "Who wants some of Granny's milk?" 😅(Can't find a vomit emoji)

Had a good laugh at a lot of the posts. Nausea? Vomit? Really?

Perhaps Gran should call it proper or real milk, as opposed to the stuff the kids have to drink at home.

Just 'milk' will do. I say that as someone who only has oat milk or lactose free. Those are what need the extra descriptor, not the real unadulterated stuff.

Ah my grandad was a dairy farmer and granny always asked if we wanted granny's milk. Hot, fresh out of the cow, steaming milk - no thanks granny!

Or in the sketch with Victoria Wood and Celia Imrie:

'Fresh from the udder!'

DidiAskYouThough · 06/12/2023 18:48

@Backtomyoldname not that it matters, but OP wrote ‘as we prefer the taste.’

My elderly mother used to (they don't sell it anymore) buy beef tongue from the butchers and have it in a sandwich.

I'll never forget taking DH round to hers when we were very newly together and her shouting from the kitchen 'Does [DH] want some tongue?'

He nearly spat his tea out and i ... well, i could have died. We still laugh about it 16 years on 😂

I’m sliently cackling as I try to BF my LO to sleep reading that

Sonolanona · 06/12/2023 19:02

When I was 15, my only sibling was born. Mum breast fed him.
One afternoon Dad made himself a cup of tea and complained the milk tasted funny, and asked why the milk was in a blue jug.
Mum replied ' that's MINE'
Dad.. 'what do you mean the milk is yours?'
Mum... pointed to her boobs... 'No I mean it's MINE'

I can still remember Dad's horrified face Grin

I think you are being a little bit silly

Sidebeforeself · 06/12/2023 19:05

My ex MIL used to keep asking me about my pussy. ‘How’s your pussy , Self?” Etc. Worst time was when she said to her dog “ Can you smell Self’s pussy?” She was genuinely oblivious.

I did have a cat by the way.

Who are the people voting YABU?

Grannies?
😂 🥛

Presumably those who think OP is being ridiculous.

She no doubt would find it perfectly normal if MIL talked about granny's biscuits (or anything else other than milk).

And no, I'm not a granny - I just think it is childish.

MrsAvocet · 06/12/2023 19:22

I wouldn't have thought anything of it. My auntie used to like sterilised milk. She was the only person we knew who drank it so everyone in our family referred to it as Auntie X's milk. We never thought she actually produced it any more than we thought that Church Juice - the particular brand of orange squash we always got at Church events and nowhere else - was grown in the graveyard.

CornedBeef451 · 06/12/2023 19:23

At DP's house DM drinks cranberry juice which is now referred to exclusively as Nanny Juice.

dontgobaconmyheart · 06/12/2023 19:32

I'd have just corrected her by saying ' Granny is asking if you'd like some cows milk DC, would you?' and move on. It is a bit cringeworthy whichever aspect you approach it from

It's a bit odd that she feels the need, do you think she disapproves of the choices you make in your household re: milk alternatives?

Poppins2016 · 06/12/2023 19:35

I can see both sides... "Granny milk" does sound a bit odd. But equally, it's an innocent description...

We refer to whole milk as "X's milk" because only one of my children drinks it. Similarly, oat milk is "Y's milk" and/or "Mummy's milk" because that's the milk we use.

derxa · 06/12/2023 19:35

Cow's milk, goat's milk, sheep's milk, human milk = milk
Everything else = not milk
Only mammals produce milk

bananamangoes · 06/12/2023 19:36

Better than Grandads milk though

🙄My DF drank milk with every meal. He lived till he was 92

Hankunamatata · 06/12/2023 19:41

That's is funny. Eldest dc refers to cows milk as normal milk 😂
As test family have goats milk or oat. Utter teenage distain

hobbitonthehill · 06/12/2023 19:43

I mean I'm with nanny on this , cows milk so much better for you than fake milk full of sugar and additives 🤮
