To feel queasy every time MIL says...

MommaTonda · 06/12/2023 16:47

We drink alternative milk in our house as we prefer the taste. The kids drink oat, almond and soya milk when at home and don't know any different.

When we are at MIL's house, she always offers the kids a glass of cows milk (not sure why) and she calls it "granny's milk".

AIBU to feel queasy every time she says "Who wants some of Granny's milk?" 😅(Can't find a vomit emoji)

Oh god. My mum makes my youngest fizzy water with squash sometimes and my 3 year old calls it 'nanny juice'. We all hate it.

That's hilarious! 😂

We don't push anything on them, they enjoy it on their cereal. They are not veggie or vegan as they choose to eat meat and cheese (as do we).

Also, not all alternative 'milk' is bad for you, it depends what brands you get. The ones we get are just almonds or oats with water. Definitely not bad for you!

Thank you for all of your replies. I have loved all the funny stories!! Shame some people have taken the post a bit seriously, it was meant as a bit of fun. 🙄

Keep the stories coming if there are any more!!😅

Ask the children how they feel about drinking cow's milk.
Don't remove their choice.

Handy hint... removing choice from children often doesn't work.

They do have a choice.

Oat / almond / soya at ours or 'Granny's milk' if they are at grannies!

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 07/12/2023 11:36

It's cow juice in our house. It's what we buy if we are expecting certain visitors, otherwise it's oat milk.

dontgobaconmyheart · 06/12/2023 19:32

I'd have just corrected her by saying ' Granny is asking if you'd like some cows milk DC, would you?' and move on. It is a bit cringeworthy whichever aspect you approach it from

It's a bit odd that she feels the need, do you think she disapproves of the choices you make in your household re: milk alternatives?

Yes I think she disapproves of alternative milks but the kids are 4 and 6 so not babies any more. They were also breastfed so it wasn't like I gave them alternative milk instead of cows / formula when they were babies or anything. They quite often say no to 'Granny's milk' but she still offers. It's not an issue, I just thought it was funny!

Yabvvu for giving your kids alternative products that are not actually good for them or the planet when they could drink healthy full fat cows milk for good bone and teeth development. Same for vegan or veggie kids. It's inappropriate to push that on to kids when we are omnivores.
Do agree about granny milk though.

Hello. The kids are 4 and 6. They're not dairy free, they just don't drink cows milk in our house. We buy almond and oat milk which is literally just almonds / oats and water (I don't get the ones full of chemicals and crap).

The idea of veggie / vegan kids and the positives / negatives of dairy is for another post I think!

Many people (the majority of the human population) cannot digest milk properly. Most people are at least a little lactose intolerant. Many others don't like the taste of milk, as OP states.

Yes, I don't like the taste and it also gives me a bad belly if I have too much. I also went off it a little when I was breastfeeding because all of a sudden it just seemed a bit weird to me 🤔

No issues with my kids drinking it though. It's their choice.

I feel your pain. Acutely....

Dh's cousin and wife have a beloved cat. There have mercifully been only a handful of occasions in the 7 year life of the cat where us, cousin's family, and dh's parents have been in the same room. But every single one of those times MIL has asked cousin and wife (in her posh, very carrying voice) - "And How Is Your Pussy?". Cousin is excellent at deadpan and answers truthfully and in depth, which normally prompts follow up pussy questions... It is hilarious and mortifying in equal measure and I'm surprised dh hasn't died of cringe yet. 😱😂

@MommaTonda I don’t about vomit inducing, but it made me chuckle 😂.

As did nanny’s juice @WhycantIkeepthisbloodyplantalive 🤣.

Think my mind is as filthy as it’s juvenile, cos these made me giggle 🤭.

BlochAroundTheClock · 07/12/2023 11:57

The first time I'm surprised my eyeballs didn't pop out and roll across the table. Mil's brother usually grins and chuckles. Various other guests tend to exchange grins and looks or leave the room. DH looks pissed off and attempts to change the subject. Fil oblivious. Mil remains unmoved by all of it and carries on regardless 😆

She may be trying to distinguish from the alternative milks you normally drink and I'm guessing her mind is definitely not on the Little Britain wavelength. It's a bit corny rather than gross but if she's not being passive aggressive about anything ie insisting it's better, I think it's ok just a bit of a granny thing to say

Gnomegnomegnome · 07/12/2023 12:03

Good luck op! You’ve opened the ‘don’t do anything different because it is wrong’ part of mumsnet.
You must use cows milk because it is law. If you use anything else then you need locking up. Bloody oat milk coming over here and stealing our babies.

overwhelmed2023 · 07/12/2023 12:05

Actually oat milk is good for the planet and dairy is not!

It's her passive aggressive way of letting you know that she (rightfully) doesn't approve of you unnecessarily feeding her growing grandchildren processed food that is significantly less good nutritionally that it's natural counterpart.

What are you on about? 😅I buy almond milk that is made out of almonds and water and oat milk made from oats and water. I specifically don't buy the ones with additives 😅

And no, pretty sure she doesn't mind 'processed' food as they have pizza and Haribo whenever they go there and it's me that gives them veg 👌

Cows milk is full of oestrogen so tell me how that is a healthy drink for a child, especially boys? And yes I'm a soya drinker as is my toddler because we are both dairy intolerant.

Nothing to do with milk....

School assembly. 600 in the hall (11-16). Staff at the back. Elderly guest priest taking the service. (Male for context)

I can't remember the context but he had a shoebox in his hands. 'Do you know what't in my box children?'

They didn't. So he told them - 'its my pussy'

'Do you want to see my pussy?' This was repeated several times.

Staff at the back crying with subdued laughter, staring at the floor to avoid catching colleagues eyes.

Soy has oestrogen like compounds too at a higher level than cow's milk, although they are processed differently by our bodies.

Obviously cows milk contains oestrogen, it's from a female lactating cow! The levels are too low to cause harm to health as shown in this meta-analysis.

If your child is actually diary "intolerant" then of course you can't give dairy, but it's nutritionally inferior to cows milk.

MECHANISMS IN ENDOCRINOLOGY: Estrogens in consumer milk: is there a risk to human reproductive health? - PubMed

Do agree about granny milk though.

You're contradicting yourself here though. Seems you are opposed to vegetarian/vegan diets as humans are naturally omnivorous and therefore biologically intended to eat a diet that includes meat?
But then you advocate drinking cows' milk, a substance not biologically intended for humans whatsoever. We are the only mammalian species that drinks the milk of another species and the only species that includes milk of any kind in our diet beyond natural weaning age.
In reality, I don't think the modern Western diet bears much resemblance to what a natural human diet is supposed to be and hasn't done so for a very long time. We eat what we like, what we have available and what we can afford but very little of it is truly "natural". If people get to choose to drink cows' milk surely they also get to choose not to eat meat too? There are lots of pros and cons of course, but if you're going to take the stance that humans should eat meat because we are biologically omnivorous then logically you should also say that we shouldn't drink the milk of other species as we are not biologically designed to do that either.

I am constantly amazed by the way older women in general and MILs in particular are always in the wrong/gross/full of ill intent/figures of fun on Mumsnet! But this is a new low, honestly.

I'm a granny and I find this bluddy hilarious😂
