So today I have a meeting the other side of the country today and I get an early train, guy in my seat when I arrive but shifts over for me (it’s a table of 4)
I’m window forward facing
he’s aisle forward facing

But THEN! The guy reaches down into a carrier bag on the floor and pulls out a large bowl which he places on top of his laptop, then reaches down again and retrieves a box of cornflakes that he tips into said massive bowl and then pulls out a big bottle of milk, pours it on the flakes and proceeds to munch away while watching iplayer though headphones like munch munch munch right in my effing ear, it’s not first class or anything so the seats are very close to each other.

I wouldn’t even sit next to my DH to eat cereal that close let alone a stranger!!!

After about 2 mins of this I interrupted his viewing and say “You have to let me out! I have to move while you eat, this is so antisocial and I can’t bear it”
“But I’m nearly finished” he says agog
“But I can’t bear to listen to another mouthful!”

So i do indeed leave while he finished and read my book further down the train where I can, in fact, still bloody hear him munch-munching away…

Then when it’s safe I return to my seat and get back to work

Oh yeah and when I’d arrived I get out my laptop and set it up to work, he reaches right across me an plugs into the socket that would have been closest to me, before I have a chance to, the passenger across from me notes this and offers me his socket with a knowing look, so is this further proof he’s a without doubt a total psycho?

I think in the end I made him as uncomfortable as he made me by calling him out, so I guess we are quits (for now)

It’s quite out of character for me to confront anyone ever, so tell me, is this totally antisocial or am I being over sensitive? and if I’m you think I’m being too soft then, please tell me what’s the worst outrageous antisocial behaviour you’ve witnessed on a train?

My colleague just told me she watched someone clipping their toenails once with those clippers that fling the nails every which way. So that’s probably worse

I had to leave Hamnet after 40 minutes last week
The guy beside me munching so loudly

I thought I was going to lose the plot !!!!!

“I thought I was going to lose the plot”

Hamnet dies.

HTH.🙂

"Everyone is laughing at you."
Said like that's the important part. Ooh oh no.

Be free Mr Cornflake. You're not doing any harm.

I don’t think you understand how percentages work. It doesn’t matter how many people voted or didn’t vote, OP has been voted as unreasonable. Just the facts!

And what was OP’s ridiculous overreaction, sitting somewhere else? Big whooppee.

They didn’t sit somewhere else though did they? READ the thread! Op told a man off for eating cereal on a train, told him to let her move out because they ‘couldn’t bear to hear another mouthful’ then went back and sat down next to the man again!!! So yes op’s reaction was absolutely ridiculous! And yes I do understand percentages, what I also understand is that MOST people would not have reacted the way op has reacted and also MOST people don’t get the ‘ick’ over silly minor things!

Do what you like but next time you sit in a train with a massive bowl, carton of milk and big box of cereal, know that everyone is laughing at you.

Jeez READ my earlier posts if you want to make silly comments at me! I said I think the man’s behaviour was odd, so have a lot of other people! What is even more strange is op’s reaction of “I can’t bear another mouthful” on a public train where people do eat!

30yearoldvirgin · 09/12/2023 10:00

You definitely outweirded him. As if you said that to him! So rude!

Oh wow, I laughed when I read this this morning! What a smug response, as though the whole of society should change because a mumsnet vote went 1% in your favour 😂

And I also didn’t vote yesterday either.

I am ND and have severe sensory processing issues but I would never expect other people not to behave in certain normal ways just to suit me. The arrogance of saying people are allowed to eat sandwiches in your presence!

People are on trains for a long time or at inconvenient times. They’re allowed to eat and drink, it’s not against the train rules. You need to invest in headphones or some earplugs and climb down a rung or two - you’re part of society, not the queen of it. Jeez.

Next time I get the train I’m taking crisp sandwiches, I hope I get a seat next to you.

Are you serious!!! I don’t for a second think that I’m right or wrong ! it was a silly situation that highlighted my own weirdness along side another brilliant human equally weird as myself

it was all fine he took me in good humour and we even said goodbye to each other when he got off

yes mumsnet I overreacted obviously! !

and yes he was strangely organised but I salute him and his noisy cereal

eat what ever you like my friend

i give up on this site … has everyone’s sense of humour gone

Take your own advice, love and read the thread - OP moved, I didn’t say the man moved!!

How is it ridiculous for OP to move? She didn’t ask him to move!

I don’t think you do understand percentages because you still keep saying ‘oh but most people didn’t vote’.

No one has said don’t eat food on a train, not even the OP, but you keep proclaiming you will eat, like a badge of honour!

Err no YOU READ the thread, op stated very clearly they moved after creating a load of drama, then RETURNED to her seat NEXT TO HIM and started moaning that he plugged his charger into the port on the train!!!!

Yep what I have learned about this place is that people get upset over other’s doing something so natural such as eating. Eating a packet of crisps works them up into a frenzy and god forbid if you ever laugh and giggle, some weirdo will be flashing evil looks at you! Bet these people would be amazing company at a party 🤣

Well I was genuinely interested to see what the response would be, I think we both made a transgression but I wasn’t sure really 🤷‍♀️

I wouldn’t say I was moaning though just a lively debate and greatful you all joined in

thanks for your feedback x

Oh, was there something funny in this thread we were supposed to laugh at?

You have come across very pompously. Your opening post does not read like someone being lighthearted at all. I think this is back peddling. Enjoy your train journeys, I hope you never have a cold and need to blow your nose or cough or ever feel hungry because the sound of you eating a sandwich will definitely rile up someone else.

CormorantStrikesBack · 09/12/2023 12:02

I used to do a train commute and people eating, including cereal was quite normal. I used to do my makeup on the train. And occasionally eat boiled eggs which probably is antisocial! 😁

I agree with a pp, you are just back pedaling! Nothing funny or light hearted about your thread at all

The only people laughing are freaks who can't function in society and have a weird need to add exaggerated size adjectives when describing items. I think people with HUMUNGOUS food can cope with you lot and your dramatic outbursts.

You’re right, the food was humongous and therefore ridiculous, thanks for agreeing with me 🤣

I suspect 51% of people understood your sense of humour, and 49% are grumpy gits and you touched a nerve didn’t 😅

Peacheroo · 09/12/2023 21:21

Catza · 05/12/2023 21:09

The weird bit is where you felt compelled to give him a lecture. A simple “excuse me” while changing a seat would have sufficed

This. And why did you go back to the seat if there were other seats?

You're both slightly psycho.

pookie999 · 10/12/2023 06:20

I sat beside a woman who applied fresh nail polish. I'm very sensitive to this type of smell. I could never go into a nail salon for instance or I would instantly get a headache 😩

Missingmyusername · 10/12/2023 07:56

@littlebopeepp234 Yup- I mean kids giggling wouldn’t bother me. But people can move seats for whatever reason they want to, they may want to sit quietly, concentrate, read, have a conversation with a fellow passenger … not have the fear of that humongous bowl of crunchy nut coming their way 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Hilarious thread thanks @capermum 👍🏼🤣

Yes but it works both ways doesn’t it! Someone might want to sit in a quiet area but they have to realise it’s a public place unfortunately and you don’t get to dictate the actions of others just because it suits you. People should not have to sit in silence just because ONE person isn’t happy. I just find it strange that someone would get so upset about someone else eating or laughing. I hardly ever notice every day noises like that because I’m used to hearing them. Some people obviously have some serious issues
