Milkshake story den.

Why are we reading books about pride, gender and drag to pre-school children.

Pride is not really about the LGB anymore is it. Let's be real.

All the leather fetishists, puppy play, etc

Are you really comparing gay people here to kinks?

yes I would and have read books to my daughter about sexuality and race and other differences. No I haven’t read books that would be predominantly about a sexual fetish.

I’m not, as you know perfectly well.

Im saying that books with pictures of half naked adults in fetish wear are not appropriate for children. Just because it’s a gay person in fetish wear rather than a straight person doesn’t make it ok.

Reading them to your children doesn’t make you tolerant, its makes you daft

nauticant · 01/12/2023 19:09

It's that book that's doing that. I despair at the wilful blindness of some of the cheerleaders on this thread.

DonnaBanana · 01/12/2023 19:23

I don’t care about the sexuality. Even having a man and woman snogging is inappropriate in a book for young children. I am okay with stories and TV shows having token characters though as it helps diversity but they don’t need to be making out

bucksfizzforbrekie · 01/12/2023 19:26

It's not difficult is it, fetish wear has no place in kids books or films whatever the sexual orientation of the character. The book is grim and I'm astounded that someone decided it was appropriate to read on Milkshake ffs.

The “peadophile related language” is just nonsense.

Explaining difference to children is important.

There is nothing here to “safeguard” children from. They are not in danger. It’s a book.

How do you think grooming works? 'it's just a book' becomes 'it's just a photo' becomes 'it's just a film' and so on. A cute cartoony book featuring adult fetish and paedophilia references, being shown to them by trusted adults is exactly what children need to be safeguarded from. Where do you draw the line, if not here?

Have you actually read the book?

firstly - the “peadophile references” thing is conspiracy theory nonsense. And frankly pretty disgusting homophobia.

the actual book is heartwarming story of inclusion. The one image people are getting upset about is an image of a pride parade - with people wearing realistic clothing for the event.

This “save the children” rhetoric is hysteria.

So this image of the front cover, from Amazon, doesn't include a character holding up a sign which reads 'love is love'? Which as many of us are aware, is a slogan for 'minor attracted persons' organisation the Paedophile Information Exchange?

Just because you're naive doesn't mean everyone else is

To be fair, I think a lot of people wouldn’t know about that reference- love is love is a phrase used in lots of circles.

Doesn’t make the book ok though.

Yes it does say that and no clearly it isn’t referring to your definition - it’s not some “hidden code” for peadophiles. That is clearly conspiracy nonsense.

love is love is widely used in the LGBTQI community and to equate it to peadophilia is ridiculous.

I think I have missed a MAP reference in the book? I’ve only read the pages available online.

TheKeatingFive · 01/12/2023 20:13

It's in the illustrations. It's linked on the thread.

You think bondage gear is 'realistic' and suitable for viewing by four year old children?

This is true. Peck on the cheek, affectionate hugs, etc, fine. Those are in kids' books all the time.

But full on snogging is not something that is usually put in a children's book. Just another boundary getting pushed.

It’s not though is it? The original poster said
“Why are we reading books about pride, gender and drag to pre-school children.”

The image clearly shows a pride March in which IN THE BACKGROUND there is an image of a man in the kind of clothes that you would see at a pride March.

surely most people here wouldn’t be against taking their kids to pride?

Some people take their children to Folsom Street Fair.

This doesn't mean it's a good idea.

The guiding phrase of BDSM used to be 'safe, sane, and consensual'.

No child can consent to kink, to fetish, to witnessing exhibitionism or sexually motivated behaviour.

SaneAndInPain · 01/12/2023 20:32

@ArthurbellaScott I mean, this is from a well known Disney film and nearly all of them end with an equally passionate kiss

Yes, that is a fair point. Maybe it seems different when one party is in bondage gear.

If you were trying to sneak in a MAP reference (on top of the Love is love is love nod) how would you do it?

So if, for example, grandad's pride was about grandad and the grandkids going to a fun event with grandad's friends who all have shaved heads and DMs, that'd be all good? With bright illustrations of grandad's jolly friends waving union jack flags, and holding signs saying 'Britain First'? After all, the union flag is just the flag of the UK, and 'Britain first' could mean lots of things to different people, it's just paranoia to think it's a slogan of a particular group, right?

Inclusive, helping children learn tolerance for difference, no children need safeguarding from a book, if you've got a problem with that you're a bigot seeing issues where there are none, yes?

I don't know but claiming that all pictures of maps are now pedophile morse code does make it seem like a conspiricy.
