Defrosting the car

It really winds me up when people leave the engine running for ages, and windscreen wipers going full pelt, instead of just defrosting the car with water/scraper and going.

YABU for not saying why it winds you up.

DustyLee123 · 29/11/2023 07:10

Waste of petrol, bad for the environment, noisy for those in bed.

Mine mists up inside and the aircon is rubbish so I have to run it <shrug>

cuckyplunt · 29/11/2023 07:11

Thanks for reminding me, I’m going to give myself an extra 5 minutes to defrost the car.

Sk8erboi · 29/11/2023 07:12

There's a woman who lives directly opposite my sons primary school and she leaves her car on and goes inside when defrosting her car which she seems to do at school run time.
I just think what a selfish cow.

Whinge · 29/11/2023 07:13

Defrosting my car doesn't take very long, it's the demisting on the windows that seems to take an eternity, and i've yet to find a way to do it without turning on the car. 🤷🏻‍♀️

How is she selfish?

Malarandras · 29/11/2023 07:14

And the ice/mist inside the car is to be dealt with how exactly? Need to run the heaters to clear them, which means turning the engine on oddly enough!

LubaLuca · 29/11/2023 07:15

It's to get the air con on to clear the inside, the scraping etc does very little for misted windows. Having your car running for a few minutes before setting off isn't terrible, definitely better than peering through a tiny bit of wiped windscreen as the rest of it keeps fogging up (which I've seen, many times).

You don't get this problem if you use tepid water to on the windscreen. And it takes about 30 seconds.

SpottyCrumpet · 29/11/2023 07:15

Agree, it’s the misting inside that requires the engine to run. Every darned time.

SpottyCrumpet · 29/11/2023 07:16

@jc12689 i defrost the car like this and it has zero effect on the misting.

Sk8erboi · 29/11/2023 07:16

Cosycover · 29/11/2023 07:13

How is she selfish?

Because the fumes and smell coming from her exhaust whilst loads of children are walking past to go to school 😐
Surely you don't seriously think that's ok?

QueenBean22 · 29/11/2023 07:16

Defrosting and demisting the car is the most soul destroying chore of winter.

YABU. If it works for them and it’s not affecting you then leave them to it

Same here, I wish it only took 30 seconds to demist. Grin

MiddleagedBeachbum · 29/11/2023 07:19

My car also needs to run for 5 mins to clear the inside and it has electric heated windscreen!

Peacheroo · 29/11/2023 07:19

If it's cold enough you need to run it to clear the mist anyway after scraping.

I completely agree that no one should be running their car for longer than necessary but people will do this regardless. I wouldn't be running any water over my windscreen. DP does and I know you can at the right temperature but I'm not risking a crack because I've messed it up.

QueenBean22 · 29/11/2023 07:19

@jc12689 30 seconds I wish!!

margotrose · 29/11/2023 07:20

If I don’t run the engine I can’t clear the inside of my windscreen.

LubaLuca · 29/11/2023 07:20

What do you propose she does? Set off onto the road without being able to see the children walking past, or seal her mouth around the exhaust pipe to save others from breathing it in?

Peacheroo · 29/11/2023 07:20

@Sk8erboi we didn't know what was ok or not because your post didn't clarify. Her one car probably makes little difference when added to all the cars on the school run. It's not ok to run your engine but it's not that selfish.

TheCadoganArms · 29/11/2023 07:23

Cosycover · 29/11/2023 07:13

If you live in an urban area with lots of neighbours then leaving your car ticking over for 15-20 mins at 6.30am while you have breakfast/get ready for work when many people might not be on the same timetable as you is a bit twatty.

Seaglass7 · 29/11/2023 07:23

YABU!

My car is a buggar to defrost, I have to have the engine running to de-mist the windscreen!

What would you rather happen? People driving around not being able to see properly during the morning commute?

margotrose · 29/11/2023 07:24

Sk8erboi · 29/11/2023 07:16

Surely you don't seriously think that's ok?

What do you think she should do instead then? Drive off with the windows fogged up?

Sk8erboi · 29/11/2023 07:25

LubaLuca · 29/11/2023 07:20

What do you propose she does? Set off onto the road without being able to see the children walking past, or seal her mouth around the exhaust pipe to save others from breathing it in?

I propose she doesnt do it in the 10 minute window where hundreds of children are walking past to go to school, failing that then yes, sealing her mouth round the exhaust is a good shout.

Yes it's a job that needs doing but I wouldn't dream of doing it in that location at that time. She should do it 10 mins before she does it. I stand by that she is selfish.
