Defrosting the car

It really winds me up when people leave the engine running for ages, and windscreen wipers going full pelt, instead of just defrosting the car with water/scraper and going.

My window ices up on the inside so yes I do do this and I don’t really care either, if I was playing loud music until 3am then yes the neighbours would have cause to complain, but running a car, really your complaining!!!

People need to switch to electric cars if they can. End of story

And those of us who can't?

I often worry about those unemployed 5 year-olds because of the low demand for cobalt.

just because you type "end of story" doesn't mean you are right. Often it means the opposite.

Fluffybunniesandkittens · 04/12/2023 11:27

You wouldn't like living next to me then.
Although my car isn't left unattended and we scrape the frost/ice, the car is sat running until the inside of the car is warm enough for my asthmatic son to get in. Breathing in cold air makes his asthma worse, as does sitting with the heaters on full. So the car is warmed up then heaters turned to minimum for the journey. When it's time to pick him up, I have to get to school half an hour early to find a legal parking space so by the time he comes out the inside of the car is freezing again, so a couple of minutes before he comes out, I turn the engine on to put the heaters on so that it's warm when he gets in. This only takes a couple of minutes as the engine is warm.

Yes how?

What do you propose she does? Set off onto the road without being able to see the children walking past, or seal her mouth around the exhaust pipe to save others from breathing it in?

If she's doing this on a public road, she's committing an offence.

You don't get this problem if you use tepid water to on the windscreen. And it takes about 30 seconds.

Which then goes on the pavement/road where is freezes and becomes a risk to over people.

Allfur · 04/12/2023 14:58

wrapping a scarf around the lower half of the face also helps with cold triggered asthma

Allfur · 04/12/2023 15:01

Just some acknowledgement that it does negatively affect fellow humans, might be nice, rather than the I don't care brigrade

Member984815 · 04/12/2023 16:17

I bought a car cover , it's a faff to put in in the evening but pulling it off in the morning and being able to just hop in the car and go is a joy. Minimal defrosting required .

Not for myself or my son as it makes it harder to breathe and is chlostrophobic, to have it loose enough to breathe it doesn't warm the air.

HerMammy · 04/12/2023 18:32

It's almost as if people have never heard of a windscreen cover or a cloth to wipe the inside.

They hate the cold we don't have the infrastructure to make them as convenient as petrol the insurance rates are too high but yes let's all switch to electric!

megletthesecond · 04/12/2023 19:20

her a cloth can't cut through ice on the inside of the car windows.
I've got two damp traps in my car and the quickest I've cleared my exterior and interior windows is seven minutes (yes I timed it while freezing to death). That's blower on front window, rear screen heater on, scrapers and de-icer spray. I use fresh dry cloths every day so nothing damp sits in the car.

HerMammy · 04/12/2023 22:55

@megletthesecond I've yet to have a car freeze inside, I imagine would need to be extremely cold.

tammie49 · 06/12/2023 06:48

My car has a heated windscreen so it's actually quite quick which is handy cause I can't find my scraper!

CormorantStrikesBack · 06/12/2023 07:40

I've come to the conclusion it depends on your car. So I went outside this morning. Turned my car engine on, heaters on windscreen, sprayed deicer.

Then walked over to dd's car and (not turned on) sprayed deicer and scraped. The ice came off straight away in one sweep and the car did not look misted up inside.

Went back to my car and I'm having to chisel away at the ice on the windscreen, used loads more de-icer, loads more scraping. Then had to scrape ice off the inside of my car windscreen. Then it was still misted up. Used a demister pad, did fuck all. Went back to scraping more ice off the outside of my windscreen. All this time the fans and heater are going full blast. Had to wait ten minutes for windscreen to clear. I have bought one of those demisting things to sit in the car and absorb moisture and it makes no difference.

So my car took ten minutes with engine running, dd's car took a minute without engine running. Parked next to each other.

CormorantStrikesBack · 06/12/2023 07:43

The ice here is all on the inside, this is after first scrape of the inside…..you can see some ice on the dash where it’s fallen down as I’ve scraped. It was -0.5 so not particularly cold.
