How do you pronounce Rochester?

Ive always read it as Roh Chester but listening to it on Audible and she pronounces it RoT Chester.

Have I been wrong all these years?

I've always pronounced it Rot Chester...
Didn't occur to me you could pronounce it any other way?
It's how they pronounced it in the film adaptations I've seen too

FranticHare · 28/11/2023 17:58

You are wrong :-)

Rot-chester all the way!!

HollowEgg · 28/11/2023 18:00

My whole life is a lie 😱

I've always thought of it as Rot-chester (same as the town).

That's how it's been pronounced in all of the film versions and tv dramatisations that I've seen.

HolySkirts · 28/11/2023 18:05

Rot-chester, OP. Your whole life is indeed a lie.

Have you been calling insufferable St John Rivers 'Saint John' or the correct 'Sinjin'? 😀

AndAllOurYesterdays · 28/11/2023 18:06

Maybe it's an accent thing? I'd say Roh-chester (north Londoner)

Yes, sinjin it must be!

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 28/11/2023 18:10

I pronounce it the same way as you.

muchalover · 28/11/2023 18:12

Roh-chester. West country here

Friendfoe1 · 28/11/2023 18:13

Rotch like Crotch 🤣

Gotobloodysleep · 28/11/2023 18:14

It's pronounced Roh-Chester . I live near near Rochester and have never heard anyone say it any differently.

StoatofDisarray · 28/11/2023 18:16

ROTCH-ester.

UnctuousUnicorns · 28/11/2023 18:17

Roch (rhymes with "watch") - ester. No "t" sound. Definitely not Roe - chester!

As476 · 28/11/2023 18:34

Rotch-ester is how the locals say it!

spanieleyes · 28/11/2023 18:38

Charlotte Brontë was born 2 doors away from where I was born, we would say Rot-Chester!!!

MaryMary6589 · 28/11/2023 18:41

Rotchester and Sinjun for sure!! I live very close to Haworth and I've never heard any other pronunciations.

This. Absolutely no T.

Bobtheamazinggingerdog · 28/11/2023 18:44

How are you pronouncing roh Chester? Like row Chester?
it doesn't have a T so it's not rot Chester but the RO is the same sound as in rot.

Wingsnfly · 28/11/2023 18:46

@spanieleyes I grew up in Thornton from age 2 - 11. Excellent place!

Then I moved to Haworth (aged 11- 23)

(Now live in London)

I also say Rot-chester

LoreleiG · 28/11/2023 18:46

Rotchester. Some relations live there and they call it that!

SomersetBrie · 28/11/2023 18:47

Have family near there, never heard Roh-Chester.
Would you also say Roh-chdale?

aliceinanwonderland · 28/11/2023 18:48

OP When you say ROH is the OH pronounced like like the “off” in “coffee”

if so, then that’s the same as pronouncing it rotch-ester

BMW6 · 28/11/2023 18:48

StoatofDisarray · 28/11/2023 18:16

ROTCH-ester.
