How do you pronounce Rochester?

Ive always read it as Roh Chester but listening to it on Audible and she pronounces it RoT Chester.

Have I been wrong all these years?

I work there, and pronounce it Roh chester.

As do most people on Kent.

I've never heard of the Rot- chester variety. 😱

The Rochester in New York state is pronounced more Rahtchestur, but then Americans do pronounce things differently.

KimberleyClark · 28/11/2023 21:54

RotChester.

LoreleiG · 28/11/2023 21:59

Well I pronounce it rɒtʃɪstə 😉

SharonEllis · 28/11/2023 22:09

This is very funny. Is everyone being deliberately obtuse?

Rotchester as in, say blotch. Not with an actual t sound. Noone says Ro-tuh-chester but they do say Rotchester.

!!

PlimplePlop · 28/11/2023 22:09

Rot Chister

Waitingfordoggo · 28/11/2023 22:10

Me too @LoreleiG but actually more /e/ than /i/ in second syllable (I haven’t got phonetic keyboard)

Roh implies Row (your boat) though. Surely you aren't saying Rowchester? You're saying Roch-ester as in crotch? Never in my life heard anyone say Rowchester.

LylaLee · 28/11/2023 22:13

I remember my wtf the first time the teacher said Sinjin.

Wild Sargasso sea is on my to read list. Mrs Rochester's point of view.

??

roh does not imply row. roh implies the ro in roger or robin.

Scruffington · 28/11/2023 22:16

or rot

MasterBeth · 28/11/2023 22:19

Watch Esther.

Riverlee · 28/11/2023 22:19

Rotch - Chester, is how it’s pronounced locally.

How are you pronouncing roh Chester? Like row Chester?
it doesn't have a T so it's not rot Chester but the RO is the same sound as in rot.

I agree with this too. I have two siblings that live in Medway and we all grew up in Kent. It's the only way I've heard it pronounced.

I've only heard chavs pronounce Chatham without a 't'. I wouldn't say it was the norm.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/11/2023 22:20

Roch-ester

rootsandwings89 · 28/11/2023 22:21

I used to live there - I can confirm it is roch-Chester

Createausername1970 · 28/11/2023 22:50

Don't feel too bad. I know someone who was talking about a book character called

Hermy one (as in the number one).

Took me a second or two to realise it was Hermione from Harry Potter.

In my head I now think of that character as The Germy One.

It really doesn't!

How do you say 'oh dear' or 'doh'?

The h gives the o a long vowel sound, not short.

No, not "row".

Roh. Like the noise Scooby-Doo makes.

Like Uh, bit with an o.

HollowEgg · 28/11/2023 18:00

My whole life is a lie 😱

Are you saying Row Chester? Or are you saying it like Rot, but without the T? The people who are saying Rot Chester probably don't do a big T sound but have misunderstood what you meant. If you did mean Row Chester, then I'm sorry, you are very wrong. 😊

BitOutOfPractice · 28/11/2023 23:10

Rotch (rhymes with watch) - ester

Roh-Chester

thinslicedham · 28/11/2023 23:49

Rock-Chester. That's how it sounds to me in every adaptation I've ever seen, as well.

'Sinjin' definitely threw me for a loop, the first time I heard it!
