To think toast is one of life's greatest pleasures?

Lighthearted thread.

Couldn't decide what to have for tea, so I settled on toast. Fresh white loaf with loads of proper butter on with a cup of tea. Simple but absolute heaven. Perfect combination.

DH couldn't care less about toast and rarely eats it Grin

AIBU? What's your little pleasure?

6 or 7 for me, fresh tiger bread with proper salted butter. More than anything I wish toast was calorie free

Daffodilsandtuplips · 27/11/2023 22:58

5 or 6, fresh white bloomer or bloomer seeded bread with thick butter and lime marmalade. Cuppa about the same colour as the toast. Or with hot chocolate.
Toasted soldiers with dippy eggs.
Toast is the food of the Gods.

larkstar · 27/11/2023 23:03

I am a toast-based life-form.

@user6776 6 would be perfect, 5 would do, 7 no real complaint.

I make my own bread in a breadmaker - sometimes make the dough and bake it myself for things like chunky long ciabatta sticks. I get to cut the loaves into nice thick slices and my goto is always salted butter - I don't need anything else although I do fry an egg in a one-egg sized pan - I like the yoke runny. Sometimes I'll make 2-egg scrambled egg for one thick round of white bread toast. I do try not to eat too much bread - tempting as it is.

StarShipControl · 27/11/2023 23:05

I think I'm made of toast.

user6776 · 27/11/2023 23:09

Can't wait to have toast for breakfast in the morning 🤣

Fresh white brennans bread toasted, buttered, cut into soldiers and dipped into a soft boiled egg is the food of the gods.

The4teddybears · 27/11/2023 23:12

Number 5. With a decent Marge or butter and marmite ❤️❤️

BitOutOfPractice · 27/11/2023 23:14

I had an appalling slice of toast with breakfast in Luxembourg this morning. Bread all wrong. Hard as a rock but with no colour on. Crumbled to dust when I tried to spread butter on.

to be honest I felt sorry for them as a nation.

they get so many things right but if you can’t get toast right, then you’re lost.

Disturbia81 · 27/11/2023 23:19

I have it for tea all the time, so basic but delicious. Has to be lurpak!

lollipoprainbow · 27/11/2023 23:36

Pot of tea and a pile of toast is heaven !!

ItsAStupidQuestion · 27/11/2023 23:57

I make my kids a toast buffet sometimes for breakfast.

Some jam
Some lemon curd
Some cheese spread
Some marmite
Some peanut butter
Some Biscoff spread
Some Nutella

Put it all out cut into triangles on a serving platter with some fruit and they help themselves. Probably a loaf disappears those mornings 😆

I have been on low carb diet for 8 weeks…have lost a lot of weight! But can honestly say that I have had as a massive treat ,freshly baked white doorstep toast with lashings of anchor butter a couple of times AMAZING 😻

YABU. Crumpets are far superior

YABU. Crumpets are far superior

I think I'd rather eat 6 rounds of toast than 6 crumpets but... I'm making some of these tomorrow.. just for the hell of it.

Crumpet recipe

This is the crumpet recipe released by Warburtons, UK's largest commercial producer of crumpets. These easy homemade crumpets are EXACTLY like store bought!

@NomDePrune

Yes Paul Young’s greatest record Grin DH works with the Street Band’s back catalogue (such as it is: niche job!) plus I found the 7 inch in a charity shop. Always enjoy vintage TOTP on Friday evenings.

ChickpeaPie · 28/11/2023 06:57

Anyone else inspired by this thread to have toast for breakfast this morning?

Psychoticbreak · 28/11/2023 07:12

@ChickpeaPie went out especially for the bread last night.

Perfectlystill · 28/11/2023 07:13

Agree. I have toast several times a week and was so relieved earlier this year when I did a food allergy test and it shows I'm fine with gluten.

Favourite toppings:
Butter and Marmite
Butter and Bovril
Butter and Lidl strawberry jam
Butter and lemon curd
Butter and Pip n Nut peanut butter
Mayo and vintage cheddar plus some chutney
Cheese on toast under the grill with diced red onions and lots of Worcestershire sauce

The toast this morning did not disappoint!

Definitely a 4 or 5 for me.

Breakfast: Hot buttered and eaten immediately or allowed to go cold with butter and marmalade. I also agree that a Warburton's toastie for every day toast is great although a freshly sliced less processed loaf is a real treat. I live out in the sticks, so fresh bread is not available unless I make it myself.

Lunch: Cheese on toast is my favourite and I could eat it every day, often with a sliced tomato or a spoonful of coleslaw.

Evening snack: Egg or beans on toast are another favourite.

I think I have an issue with gluten as although I love them, crumpets give me really bad stomach pains!

CoffeeCantata · 28/11/2023 13:06

Sorry - haven't read whole thread but here's my contribution:

Yes, OP - it's the Food of the Gods. Only quibble is I think it's better made with day-old bread. I'd also put in a word for other toasted comestibles such as tea-cakes, crumpets and muffins.

The tea-cakes mustn't be too sweet and the crumpets need to have a brown crust on - not just slightly warm. I think Duchy crumpets from Waitrose are the best but I will eat whatever I can get.

(I read a funny story from chef Anthony Worrall-Thompson (since deceased) about muffins. He was in New York and ordered Eggs Benedict, which I thought Americans knew about???. The waiter was puzzled so he explained that it was a toasted muffin with ham, a poached egg and Hollandaise sauce. Off he went and returned with a disgusting concoction. The chef had used an American blueberry muffin for the egg, ham and sauce. Yuk.)

I'm sure it's bad for us, but that lovely toasted crust on all these things is absolutely delicious.

Perfectlystill · 28/11/2023 19:47

Love the AWT story

Daffodilsandtuplips · 28/11/2023 22:52

Beans on toast; Branston beans, thick white day old bread, toasted to shade 7 or 8, buttered and beans piled on top, the beans melt the butter, this renders the toast to a delicious soft buttery Tommy sauce raft for the beans. My go to comfort food,
