What changes do we “normal people” expect to see? Better nhs? More taxes?

Hopefully a change in attitude that all the countries problems are the fault of the poor, disabled and immigrants. This rhetoric has been pushed hard because even the most dedicated Tory voter was starting to feel that blaming labour for problems when they haven't been in power for 13 years was pushing it.

Ideally taxing of businesses and closing tax evasion loopholes to properly fund public services.

In a dream world setting the wheels in motion for universal basic income and proportional representation.

Sod all. Only political nerds and Guardian readers believe that changing political parties makes any difference to the state of the country.

Aren't there very clear research statistics into the matter, showing highly important effects of government policies such as child poverty levels, excess deaths, life expectancy, ecological stability, food sustainability...?!

You'd hope so, but although Labour is better than the Conservatives on the scapegoating and attacks on disabled people, you'd have to go Green for any real change there.

Echobelly · 26/11/2023 16:29

Not much will change but at least they probably won't be as interested in the Tories at eroding everyone's human rights.

Sadly I suspect they will continue the phoney, unnecessary war on refugees, disabled people and the unemployed. But they might at least other drop time-wasting, stupid 'culture war' nonsense.

Is it an improvement if the Tories want to erode everyone's human rights but Labour only want to erode the human rights of the female sex?

Charlie2121 · 26/11/2023 19:32

If previous Labour governments are anything to go by it’ll be more taxes and everything steadily getting worse.

LumiB · 26/11/2023 19:43

No clue, what do they even stand for anymore? Whatvsrr their policies? Starmer is flip flopping all over the place first it was green funding now its being watered down. So nope no clue other than he doesn't know what a woman is

ArcticBells · 26/11/2023 19:47

It'll be the usual spend now , pay later until we're up to our neck in debt

lkwhjis · 26/11/2023 19:51

Even higher taxes, more immigration, bigger government departments considering that government spending has never been higher. More green stealth taxes. Much higher benefits and general continuation of the decimation of the economy, until this country completes its journey towards becoming a third world hellhole.

Moonmelodies · 26/11/2023 19:53

cardibach · 26/11/2023 19:19

No it’s not.
Plus it’s not corrupt and law breaking.

You'd be surprised.

BIossomtoes · 26/11/2023 19:53

Conservative Central Office must be really worried, it’s sending its troops out in force tonight. Shame it didn’t prepare them better.

And democrats. And anybody who knows anything about history.Hmm

What's with all the Fact Resistant posters on this thread? I get that some posters hate Labour and some posters love the Tories but those emotions do not alter the facts.Confused

EasternStandard · 26/11/2023 19:56

It’s probably just the reality of Labour moving posts away from it’s going to be fantastic etc

Amusing to see the change, usually these threads are Labour overload

Ohwhatadag · 26/11/2023 20:01

To answer the OP: it will take a decade to change things economically and for services. Hopefully the culture in UK will become more positive.

Slowly, slowly things will get better. And everyone will get pissed off because a magical improvement hasn't happened overnight.

Go the opposite way though: what happens if the tories get in? Worse, worse, worse. They took from the poor and gave it to the rich, then the working classes, then it will (or is) the middle classes.

I am from the UK, but live abroad. The uk is the only country I lived in where the feeling is that you serve the government (and then only under the Conservatives.)

I'm not really sure how we arent already up to our necks in debt though? Isnt it the highest since ww2 and over 100% of gdp.

Welshywitch · 26/11/2023 20:11

TooBigForMyBoots · 26/11/2023 16:26

A stop to our decline.

The UK is a mess after 13 years of Conservative incompetence, corruption and chaos. If they are re-elected we will decline further.😬

We've had 24 chaotic years of Labour Government in Wales and we are up sh*t creek without a paddle. We no longer have a democracy, we now have a dictatorship with no accountability.
The most recent policies have been to introduce a blanket 20mph speed limit in towns apart from the ones the local council apply to be exempt - all done to "save lives" with absolutely no evidence shown to support this and despite independent bodies discrediting this. And it cost £33 million in new signage - our NHS is on its knees and £33m could have been better spent there.
The last "consultation" was to change school holidays, so there are only 4 weeks in the summer and the half terms now 2 weeks, the teachers are against it but it looks like it will happen next year.
I wouldn't wish a Labour government on anyone.

Four weeks in summer 😳

What does achievement, or the lack of it, have to do with presenting Labour politicians as morally superior people?

So there aren't any achievements then. Thanks for clarifying.

I’m expecting higher taxes and 20% increase in school fees: so will be cutting the hours of everyone we engage in the home (cleaners, ironing lady, gardeners, window cleaners, PT).

Will also be moving dd1 to state sixth form and am currently forking out huge amounts on tutoring for GCSE’s so she can get the highest marks possible as local state sixth form is a grammar and simply selects on grades.

Huge numbers of her private school classmates doing exactly the same so a great number of children expecting to progress to sixth form will be blocked by the huge influx of private school kids tutored to the max.

Will also happen at year 7 entry point too - dc previously destined for private school will be expensively tutored and take the grammar school places.

have even had a few friends talk about moving to be pretty much outside the school gates of non-grammar top state secondaries so within catchment - they can easily afford it if they’re opting out of the private school system.

meanwhile the dd2 private school is cutting scholarships and bursaries so the funded places for those on lower incomes are disappearing.

You don’t even see that you are undermining yourself do you?
People with staff being a bit inconvenienced is not an argument to use tax payers’ money to subsidise their convenience.

I doubt it. Living in Wales and all as I do. As my name makes it pretty clear if you know anything about Wales at all.

Well that’s all bollocks, isn’t it? You don’t have to like Labour. You shouldn’t lie all the time. Though 8 guess you’ve learned it from the Tory government.
It’s not a dictatorship. Do you even know what one is? Didn’t you vote in the entirely open and fair elections?
Theres not a ‘blanket’ 20mph speed limit. That’s the most easily shown bit of crap. Some bits where it was 30 are now 20, entirely under the control of local councils who can decide what works I their community. I drove from the bridge to Mumbles before I hit my first 20 the other day.
I’m a teacher. You’re talking utter shit about holidays. That just hasn’t happened.

cardibach · 26/11/2023 20:29

EasternStandard · 26/11/2023 20:17

Fortunately she’s talking shit. I’m a teacher.

Bendysnap · 26/11/2023 20:30

@cardibach I’ll be voting labour. I was just factually answering the OP about what I’ll be doing and what my friends and acquaintances will be doing to prepare.

OrangePeelLemonPeel · 26/11/2023 20:33

Look at it this way, they can’t be any worse that current shower of shite we have for a government. Whatever Labour bring, it’s time for the Tories to exit stage left and spend some time in opposition.

cardibach · 26/11/2023 20:33

To clarify on holidays, for @Welshywitch and @EasternStandard there is a consultation. It hasn’t been decided and it’s quite unlikely. It’s certainly not going to be ‘next year’. The earliest would be 2025. Like I say though. Deeply unlikely.

Lifesd · 26/11/2023 20:46

I think @Validus has it spot on!
