What changes do we “normal people” expect to see? Better nhs? More taxes?

As it happens I’d already read it. It was wheeled out in a thread quite recently.

Did you read the Full Fact on ULEZ? Are you willing to back down?

I’ve read Shapps’ letter. It had his signature on the bottom and everything. Primary sources are much more reliable.

GertrudeOnaCamel · 26/11/2023 22:19

The 'Labour's Plan For Power' podcast from the i newspaper is an interesting listen pca.st/podcast/f4ea6e90-5be5-013c-9ef9-0acc26574db2

They will form a Government but, after that, we don't know because we don't yet have a manifesto or even any inkling of their policies. But in Britain we always tend to have fairly moderate and centrist Governments, regardless of whether they're labelled Conservative or Labour, so any changes will be minimal. We are far more I pacted by what happens in the global economy, tbh.

His letter says nothing about the contested ULEZ expansion, only the expansion already known about at the time (i.e. to the A406) not to the M25, which is what the Labour disinformation campaign has alleged.

I do think it’s a bit rich of Labour boosters to say the Tories are dishonest when they themselves circulate this sort of wretched falsehood.

All of that said, no party - Labour, Tory, Lib Dem, SNP, Plaid or other - is really nice or honest. Anyone who thinks otherwise is very foolish.

I’m expecting higher taxes and 20% increase in school fees: so will be cutting the hours of everyone we engage in the home (cleaners, ironing lady, gardeners, window cleaners, PT).

Will also be moving dd1 to state sixth form and am currently forking out huge amounts on tutoring for GCSE’s so she can get the highest marks possible as local state sixth form is a grammar and simply selects on grades.

Huge numbers of her private school classmates doing exactly the same so a great number of children expecting to progress to sixth form will be blocked by the huge influx of private school kids tutored to the max.

Will also happen at year 7 entry point too - dc previously destined for private school will be expensively tutored and take the grammar school places.

have even had a few friends talk about moving to be pretty much outside the school gates of non-grammar top state secondaries so within catchment - they can easily afford it if they’re opting out of the private school system.

meanwhile the dd2 private school is cutting scholarships and bursaries so the funded places for those on lower incomes are disappearing.

I am expecting this too. We will be priced out of school, but will hang on until dc1 is moving to secondary. We will move to be in the best catchment area and drive to the current school to ensure dc2 starts at the best state school in the area and that dc1 can do so too. I won't actually have to work at all if there are no fees, but I do like my job. I will just cut my hours and keep my income under the personal tax threshold. I will have more time at home and no need for the childcare we currently pay for, or the same level of outside help. It will be a big change, but after initially panicking, I know we can make it work.

And the NHS budget is bigger than it’s ever been.

Covid, maybe? Strikes, maybe?

And here’s some relatively independent fact checking that casts doubt on Labour cheerleaders’ claims about its stewardship of the NHS.

They've taken the NHS budget, given it to their chums so they can buy cheap useless ppe that can't be used and yachts for themselves.

That NHS money isn't actually in the NHS where it should be, so the budget they go on about is false.

They lie. Covid was a convenient excuse to rob the country in my opinion.

No they haven’t. It’s all been gone through in court and every challenge has been thrown out, after full disclosure and in at least one case a hearing in the Court of Appeal.

Ever more Labour fakery.

Lack of planning, utter mismanagement and seven different Secretary of State for Health in five years. Seven!Shock

The country is paying a high price for the chaos in the Tory party.Hmm

L1ttledrummergirl · 26/11/2023 23:57

Evidence please. I'm pretty sure they would have had this everywhere if it was true.

Johnson is certainly a liar, supported by the conservative MPs for far too long.

Billions was wasted on ppe through covid.

Many people got very rich through setting up businesses after they had been awarded contracts by the government.

A number of conservatives received bonuses from companies they had recommended.

The ppe they provided was not fit for purpose.

The number of billionaires in the uk rose by 20% through covid. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/uk-billionaires-20-pandemic-cost-of-living-crisis-b2247823.html

Prior to the Tories getting into government in 2010, under Labour, anyone exhibiting cancer symptoms would be diagnosed and start treatment within 2 weeks. What's it like now?
https://www.sor.org/news/radiotherapy/two-week-wait-cancer-target-expected-to-be-scrappe

Many people have mentioned increased borrowing. The national debt hasn't been as high as it is now since the 1960s. https://www.statista.com/statistics/282841/debt-as-gdp-uk/#:~:text=National%20debt%20as%20a%20percentage%20of%20GDP%20in%20the%20UK%201900%2D2028&text=Public%20sector%20net%20debt%20amounted,been%20since%20the%20early%201960s.

People have mentioned increased taxes. Taxes haven't been as high as they are right now since the 1940s.
https://ifs.org.uk/articles/will-be-biggest-tax-raising-parliament-record

People have mentioned the transgender debate, regurgitating what the right wing Tory mouthpieces want you to think (which is all bollocks). Nobody from Labour has said that any man will be able to invade female safe spaces. These Tories want you to argue about it and start a culture war.

I have never known a Labour government to have as much sleaze and cronyism going on as these Tories. We will finally have integrity back in government.

People really need to pick their fights wisely in the next general election.

We were in a better position prior to 2010. More police officers, more doctors/nurses, better services...

Vote Labour.

The former chief secretary to the Treasury, Liam Byrne, has reignited criticism of Labour's stewardship of the economy with a note for his successor which said "there's no money left".

Errrr maybe the fact that the Labour Gov had spent everything had an influence on Tory spending after 2010.

Because one joke note proves everything. If Labour spent all the cash how did the Tories manage to increase borrowing and spending to fuckery?

lkwhjis · 27/11/2023 07:43

At this point, even the most loyal conservatives are wanting Tories booted out of office because they are a bunch of socialists dressed in conservative clothing.

Economy on life support
Highest ever taxes
Uncontrolled immigration
Highest ever welfare bill with record number of economically inactive people
Businesses being hammered
0 growth

Unfortunately booting the Tories out comes with the drawback of Labour, who are a total basket case.

Why is it funny for me to point out that Labour cheerleaders have circulated a falsehood online? That Shapps letter has been going around the internet constantly, supposedly to show that the Tories sanctioned the latest ULEZ expansion. It’s a complete lie.

Just Google the Good Law Project and look into their judicial review challenges to PPE contracts. Every challenge has failed. In every case the contracts have been held lawful.

It’s not that, it’s the ridiculous over the top language “wretched falsehood” indeed - as if that’s a concept entirely alien to Tories and their increasingly desperate apologists.

I am tired of seeing this sort of crap - of course some things can’t and won’t change but I would bet a Labour Home Sec won’t be calling one of his own countries towns a shithole.

Oh right. Just think of it as “complete lie” then. That seems like plain English.

I did also say no party is honest or nice. There’s plenty wrong with the Tories. It’s the hypocrisy of Labour fans that stands out though: saying the Tories are dishonest (fair enough), but then telling whoppers.

WhileMyDishwasherGentlyWeeps · 27/11/2023 08:24

The GLP page is laughably misleading. Because they lost on virtually everything they appealed that decision and lost again on appeal. They did get one tiny, technical decision in their favour but were refused any declaration of unlawfulness because the breach was so trivial.

As far as I know the GLP has had to pay the government’s legal costs in every case it’s brought because they’ve all failed.
