What changes do we “normal people” expect to see? Better nhs? More taxes?

It will be the same shit with different blame. Change takes YEARS.

Fionaville · 26/11/2023 15:40

I wouldn't expect anything to happen for a long time.
If they could fix the NHS and do something to stop energy and water companies from robbing us blind, that would be enough for me.

Tinkerbyebye · 26/11/2023 15:40

The exact same shit as now, simple as that

It will be the same shit with different blame. Change takes YEARS.

And by the time they actually achieve anything positive, it will be another election and the Tories will take credit for the positive change and moan about the money it cost.

Plus, with Brexit and the international COL crisis, not much is possible.

And they will still be misogynists.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/11/2023 15:42

I think we can guarantee increased public spending, and if the money is used wisely that will be a good thing. We desperately need more funding for education, the NHS, the criminal justice system and local council services. What we also desperately need is competent government and administration. Whether we'll get that is hard to predict. My current view is nobody could be worse than the Tories have been in the last 13 years.

What I hope we won't see is a rush to do some of the things their core supporters want, e.g. ill-thought out and dangerous changes around the law on gender identity. I'd like to see a rigorous evidence-based approach there and very clear guidance given to the NHS, schools and universities in an attempt to reverse some of the damage done in recent years.

As Private Fraser in Dad’s Army would say, ‘We’re doomed’ we are probably are whichever eejits get in however

Nothing will happen speedily; but we have to hope there might be a small hint of integrity after this bunch of liars.

My hope is that they will begin to address the needs of those who are at the bottom of the heap, and that the culture of blaming the poor and disadvantaged for the ills of society will stop ..... of vilifying "scroungers" on the state whilst at the same time tarring the disabled and sick with that brush.

And I hope they will bring back Sure Start.

TurningtheLightOff · 26/11/2023 15:55

Mostly the inability to have sex protected spaces or rights.

ElevenSeven · 26/11/2023 16:00

More taxes.

Men to be allowed in women’s spaces.

Private school fees to be increased by 20%

Nothing to improve as a result of any of this.

anicecuppateaa · 26/11/2023 16:01

I think they will scrap the recent changes to funded childcare hours pretty sharpish, and moved to a means tested system so the squeezed middle would be hit.

DumpedByText · 26/11/2023 16:03

It will be exactly the same shit as now, but red instead of blue!

Validus · 26/11/2023 16:05

If we’re lucky sure start will return.

However, there’s too much rot in many other areas. The future is not rosy - but it’ll be the same regardless of who gets in.

Schools may get a bit more funding, for Labour, but it’s more likely that a reduction of pressure due to the demographic bulge passing will make things ‘seem’ better for a time. Private schools will have to charge VAT but most will find ways to reduce the burden.

The NHS will continue to be slowly reformed as it’s unsustainable. Healthcare will continue to split into state and private two tier offerings.

the tax burden will Significantly increase

The government will try to find ways to rejoin the EU in all but name. This will cause major issues and distrust.

illegal immigration will continue. Entertainingly we will continue to say that the ECHR prevents us from doing anything to stop it, even after most major EU countries adopt the methods we think we can’t use. Ongoing migration into a sinking economy with massive disparity between rich and poor will great more civil unrest and problems.

theres no money to do massive infrastructure projects now, and printing more will just spike inflation further, so we will continue to underinvest and Infrastructure will fail.

People will look to emigrate, especially the young. Those with practical skills will be able to leave and those with excellent qualifications. Those who are in the middle will be stuck.

absolutely nothing. kier starmer is an establishemnt stooge with no actual politics other than retianing the status quo, and gaining a bit of power amongst the elite. he has gotten rid of anyone in hte party who mgiht actually do something like, god forbid, save the NHS. He speaks in empty rhetoric - there is no substance to anything he says

CranfordScones · 26/11/2023 16:08

We will all be led to the sunlit uplands of a nirvana-like socialist paradise (but with none of the bad socialist stuff) and glory will shine all around. Or is that the LibDems?

In practice, expect lots of ill-considered policies that seem like a good idea at the time but have unintended consequences. There'll be political infighting (but much more vicious than the Tories) and the kind of tax-and-waste inefficiency that Labour are so good at. There'll be no accountability for years because everything bad will be blamed on the previous administration.

So not much difference.

YouJustDoYou · 26/11/2023 16:09

Men to be guaranteed access in female spaces. Arrest for hurting feelings. Being banned for asking for female-only intimate care in the NHS.

ginandtonicwithlimes · 26/11/2023 16:12

What do you mean by "normal people"?

MereDintofPandiculation · 26/11/2023 16:14

Hopefully less contempt for the poor, fewer jobs for mates, and slightly more integrity.

Einevinefine · 26/11/2023 16:17

Change takes years and the Tories have done a lot of damage. It’s a poisoned chalice for Kier Starmer and his cabinet.

That said, I would dread another Tory win.

Schooldinner2 · 26/11/2023 16:18

Sure start seemed good but- they had 1 activity per day for about an hour.
So maybe 3 per week. And only one was general access so 2 others were twins/multiples and child minders.
They could take say 15 families. Then turned people away.
Ours used sharp knives. Which several kids cut themselves on.
Insisted the children sit for story. And before closing had real tins of beans etc to play with, while other parents had left babies crawling about.

What needs to change in education is
some accountablilty for teachers for marking work.
Reduction in gung ho detentions etc.
Accelerated asd and adhd asssessments not least for kids with siblings with it.
More special school places.

Energy - incentives for solar panels.

Im concerned about tax on school fees as could impact getting dc2 into same school as dc1 due to places.

Sparehair · 26/11/2023 16:18

A massive crisis of rising expectations.

everyone is expecting increased spending in health and education but uk is a relatively high tax economy already- basic rate of 30% if you acknowledge that NI is just tax. Borrowing is relatively expensive so that’s a harder investment case. Not enough rich people to make a difference by taxing the shit out of them.

Basically they need to get productivity out of the toilet but that’s really difficult as requires a real shift.

cardicoat · 26/11/2023 16:20

Even more sex crimes.

All police to monitor social media posts for evidence of wrongthink instead of investigating real crime.

Collapse of the education system as too many children will be priced out of private education, including those who are forced to privately educate their SEN children due to bullying.

Everyone priced out of car ownership. Apart from the rich.

Absolutely nothing. There’s not enough money to pay for it. The only way anything will change is if people pay more taxes and/or NI is payable on pensions.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 26/11/2023 16:21

They have a lot of work to get us out of the massive hole this mob of liars and charlatans have dropped most of us into. Plus you have people brainwashed by the right wing press who believes the Tories give a shit about them.
