What changes do we “normal people” expect to see? Better nhs? More taxes?

The country will fall heavily into debt.

That ship’s sailed. The country’s already up to its ears in debt. Tory debt.

Exactly, but I predict even more debt. Labour have historically promised to give us everything, but with no plan in place as to how it will be financed. Their plan usually just involves heavily taxing the rich. Obviously that can’t pay for everything, but beyond that, they never ever have a plan. In their favour is the fact that it’s now been so long since they were in power, that the young voters have no knowledge of what a Labour government looks like. I’m sure Labour will get in at the next GE, but the country, already teetering on a precipice, will pay a heavy price.

And who decrees how much money Wales gets? Give you a clue - their leader lives in Downing Street.

Seriously? Do you think they get given less than ths equivalent amount of the rest of the UK?

No, they’ve just spaffed it all away.

Yes, seriously. It’s bloody obvious, surely?

The one thing guaranteed to happen is lots of people complaining that they haven't instantly filled the hole it's taken the Conservative party 14 years to dig (with the enthusiastic participation of those same people).

The country's broken (and broke). It'll take at least a decade to recover from this, if not two. The only thing that'll change is that we'll start the long, slow process of recovery - and hopefully we'll see an end to the politics-as-a-reality-show approach to running the country.

What do you mean by "normal people"?

Not politicians and not the Elon Musk’s/Jeff Bezoz’s of the world I’d imagine.

tinytemper66 · 26/11/2023 17:20

There are too many problems for the next non-Tory govt to be a success. This will be a gift for the Tories who will blame that government for infinity. I can't see a non-Tory govt lasting more than one term as the country is in such shit.

Only if you’re a blinkered socialist

Same shit, better managed.

tiggergoesbounce · 26/11/2023 17:22

Men to be allowed in women’s spaces

Already happening now 🤔🤔

@Tomorrowillbeachicken

Yeah, you're right.

Most likely, though possibly Sir Keir will do such a fine job at aping the Tories, that the public will be confused enough to grant him another term in 2029.

Life was much better under new Labour, IME. NHS waiting lists were shorter, new schools were built.

I imagine it will take time to recover from the Tory years of under-investment. I’d expect investment into the NHS, education and green energy in particular. Taxes are currently at historically high levels so unlikely to go up any more, but might be organised differently. Plus just not being in thrall to oil companies, property developers and other Tory donors should means things improve significantly.

Theres an interesting piece on the party’s stance on gender in today’s Observer. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/nov/26/labour-grassroots-back-starmer-gender-self-identification

Labour grassroots back Starmer’s new stance on gender, allies claim after poll

Members back ending of support for self-identification and broadly share views of public on gender recognition, says Labour Together group

LickleLamb · 26/11/2023 17:31

I’m beginning to wonder how much of a majority they will have.
Recently Cameron stating that Israel needs to curtail its killing of Palestinians,
Starmer is falling over himself to be pro Israel after Corbins disaster,
They should do away with the triple lock for pensioners -but I doubt they will
They think women have penises,
What will they do about immigration…..be kind?
I thought I’d have more to write but don’t know what their great ideas are ….

MaidOfSteel · 26/11/2023 17:32

Have you never, as an adult, experienced change of government, OP? Nothing much changes for quite a while. Real change takes time and, most often, money. No party is claiming they'll take us to the 'sunlit uplands' and it really pi££es me off when people claim this. Even some small improvements for ordinary working people would be much appreciated, I'm sure.

surreygirl1987 · 26/11/2023 17:32

What needs to change in education is
some accountablilty for teachers for marking work.

Erm, excuse me, what?!

Tbf the system needs a full change. It needs to be strength and interest based and stage not age education…

LickleLamb · 26/11/2023 17:36

Life was much better under new Labour, IME.

@Changed18 but at that time technology was booooming -everyone was making money, banks (and thus gdp) was booming.

Then we had the global crash 2008 -then Cameron and austerity as the coffers were empty - as stated by the outgoing Labour finance minister.

fridascruffs · 26/11/2023 17:37

Rejoin the customs unions and single market, hopefully. It'll help. Start to repair the NHS- letting people languish on sick lists for want of care is not helping anyone or anything, particularly the economy. Let councils start building council houses again, I hope. Put money into subsidised insulation, and reduce people's bills that way. There's stuff they could do, but they'll have to make choices. They can't be worse than this lot, anyway.

anotherside · 26/11/2023 17:38

I have zero faith in Starmer to actually enact any significant left wing policy, but it boggles my mind how anyone can look back at the last 13 years and then put an X next to a Tory candidate. Perhaps if you’re making high six figures, have an innate fear of any Labour government, and enough for private education, healthcare etc but otherwise surely people would prefer a functioning society?

SamphireAndSalmon · 26/11/2023 17:39

Fionaville · 26/11/2023 15:40

I wouldn't expect anything to happen for a long time.
If they could fix the NHS and do something to stop energy and water companies from robbing us blind, that would be enough for me.

And more funding for education

SamphireAndSalmon · 26/11/2023 17:40

WoollyRosebud · 26/11/2023 15:44

As Private Fraser in Dad’s Army would say, ‘We’re doomed’ we are probably are whichever eejits get in however

Really I'd rather try the others these ones are evil bastards.

Mostly the inability to have sex protected spaces or rights.

That tide is turning
