What changes do we “normal people” expect to see? Better nhs? More taxes?

More taxes.

Men to be allowed in women’s spaces.

Private school fees to be increased by 20%

Nothing to improve as a result of any of this.

Private schools should be abolished anyway.

The NHS is too important to be subject to party politics. We need a massive cross-party discussion on how to take it forward, because it's not working now and it's getting worse.

I would admire (and vote for) any party that agreed to this.

Takenwithtea · 26/11/2023 17:43

They have a record of attacks on disabled people (the notorious Atos, which led to suicides and Britain being investigated by the UN for human rights breaches), but they're not as bad as the Conservatives on that score, so it's likely a lot of disabled people who will otherwise die will survive if Labour wins the election.

Generally, they tend to invest more in public services, so,for example, under previous Labour governments we've had fewer homeless people and far, far lower levels of child poverty.

Somewhere the tens of thousands killed by Tory policies since 2008 has been tallied. I imagine this number will continue to rise, but at a slower rate over time.

Think you're right @Livelovebehappy

Really I'd rather try the others these ones are evil bastards.

Wow, someone’s really drunk the Kool-Aid.

Do feel free to tell us what you think of the Conservative Party's achievements during this period of government.

BorgQueen · 26/11/2023 17:47

The same but with the added ‘bonus’ of Women losing even more of their rights and potentially being jailed for ‘hate speech’ against the sacred Trans.

anotherside · 26/11/2023 17:47

The Tories have been in power for 30 of the last 44 years - and those 14 years were Blair’s centrist government which didnt challenge Thatcher’s economic model, but merely cushioned its sharp edges.

Every serious issue facing this country now - energy companies ripping off the consumer with impunity, general cost of living, education failing because decent teachers have had enough and leaving in droves, unaffordable housing with average first time buyers now near 40, a frequently struggling health service - it’s all down to Tory ideology and policies.

What does achievement, or the lack of it, have to do with presenting Labour politicians as morally superior people?

It’s got nothing to do with moral superiority. Achievement is functioning public services and low levels of poverty. The current government is an abject failure on both counts.

Spendonsend · 26/11/2023 17:52

I just hope for less corruption /back handers and more integrity. At least for the first few years.

I vaguely hope a bit of investment in public services might make the economy a grow a bit.

But you said the Tories are “evil bastards”. So presumably Labour politicians aren’t, and must be morally superior.

Dontmesswiththeyakult · 26/11/2023 17:56

Nothing. Nothing good will happen and you can expect things to get worse. Labour are only good at one thing: blaming the tories. And they will spend 4 years doing exactly that, while improving nothing.

I said nothing of the sort. Try again.

WhileMyDishwasherGentlyWeeps · 26/11/2023 18:01

You’re right, you didn’t. A different poster did. My apologies for mixing you up with another poster.

So your post and ilovesooty’s are doubly irrelevant.

They should do away with the triple lock for pensioners
@LickleLamb really? You know our pensions are amongst the lowest in Europe, yes? And you want them eroded further?

As is the current Labour government in Wales.

Probably the same as last time they will leave a note on a desk saying that they bankrupted the coffers
wish the Green Party would get it together
there’s just no one to vote for
labour will screw everything up just like Boris did

What the Green Party who are up to their necks in gender ideology and TWAW?

Yes - I would like to see a Royal Commission to set out a plan for the next 50 years

Libertass · 26/11/2023 18:10

It would be unrealistic to expect transformative change in the short term, because the country is in a serious mess, and the public finances are fucked, so Labour won’t be able to just throw money at problems.

They have promised to remove non-dom tax status and remove tax breaks for private education. This will raise a few billion, which they have already spent many times over.
They will try to negotiate a massive re-set of Britain’s relationship with the EU, and work together in partnership far more. What they won’t do, however, is bring back free movement because the unions and working class voters in ‘red wall’ seats wouldn’t accept it, and it would tear the party apart.

RheaRend · 26/11/2023 18:10

What needs to change in education is
some accountablilty for teachers for marking work.

Do you understand the difference between marking and giving feedback? Which has the biggest impact on learning?

User18598390 · 26/11/2023 18:11

Not a lot

stuckdownahole · 26/11/2023 18:13

90% of Labour MPs were Remain so if Starmer gets a majority, expect the UK to gradually pivot back to the EU, perhaps even set up some kind of customs arrangement that won't be called a customs union but will do the job of one.

Blair did well at recruiting teachers and hopefully that will happen again.

More housebuilding will happen as Labour are less concerned about preserving the countryside in a sort of idyllic 1950s state. It is cheaper and easier to build on green field sites.

L1ttledrummergirl · 26/11/2023 18:16

I hope they will stop making billionaires with taxpayers money and start reinvesting into making public services better. Aka stop giving money to the likes of baroness Malone and claiming it was invested in the NHS.

No more lies, open and honest governance.

If they could raid the magic money tree to the tune of billions overnight to fix the damage Truss did, they can raid it again to fix public services and ensure that the most vulnerable in society have a real safety net.

Scrap Rwanda and stop embarrassing Britain on the international stage by governing in line with traditional British values, rather than dog whistle racism.

Keep cash as a method of currency, come away from intrusive AI technology keeping tabs on how people spend their money.

Make policing, justice, education, health and social care the centre of their plans.

To be fair, by just reinvesting our taxpayers money into the country instead of robbing us blind will make a huge difference quickly if they have the will.

Sadly the erosions of women’s rights - we have fought so long and hard for.
No longer having protected women’s spaces . I really fear for the future of my daughter and nieces with what is currently happening around women’s rights and protecting women .
Sadly we as women are entering an era of regressions rather than progression
