Is this acceptable acceptable supermarket behaviour?

Nipped to the local supermarket for a few bit (yes I mean wine)

Bloke in front of me at the checkout has 3 loose green peppers, lovely assistant on the till looks bemused and says they don't sell loose peppers - only in packs if 3. Bloke responds that packs have red, yellow and green peppers and he only wants green do he's opened 3 packs and taken the green ones.

Lovely checkout assistant says cannot scan them - bloke then gets the opened empty packaging from his pocket and tells her to can barcode!

Is it me or is this totally bonkers?

Would you do this?

I think it’s weird the store doesn’t sell loose peppers. The guy is supposed to by 3x the amount of peppers than he needs to get the ones he wants.

Needmorelego · 25/11/2023 19:49

She should have charged him 3 times - as he took one from 3 packs 😂

SisterMichaelsHabit · 25/11/2023 19:50

Most shops sell loose peppers. He should go to one if he wants to buy loose peppers. Just like if I want to buy a coat I don't pick up a Tesco security guard's coat and demand a cashier sell it to me either.

Thesearmsofmine · 25/11/2023 19:52

He was being unreasonable. Who even likes green peppers.

Fair point ( though they are a requirement for homemade salt and chilli chips) yummmm

Needmorelego · 25/11/2023 19:53

I never actually noticed a difference in flavour between the colours. Is there meant to be a difference 🤔

rwalker · 25/11/2023 19:56

He was being a twat you wouldn’t open 3 multi packs of crisps because you wanted 6 packs of salt and vinegar

they should of charged him for 3 lots of 3 peppers

She actually should have done since he's damaged their property and ensured the rest of the peppers can't realistically be sold on at full price.

'You broke it you bought it' used to be a thing, but supermarkets have got too laid back about this. When I worked at a supermarket it was a regular occurrence for people to stack their shopping badly on the checkout and then when a jar fell off and smashed, we just called for a cleaner who cleaned it up! Or for people or their kids to knock jars off shelves. Or for people to feed kids food as they walked around then ask us to bin the empty own-brand packet which they swore up and down they'd brought in from another shop (where they mysteriously hadn't done their week's shopping because they were doing it here), and there was nothing we were allowed to do. Or sometimes we'd just find the empty packets dumped in random aisles.

No charge, we just absorbed the losses. And yet if someone had walked out of the store with something in their handbag that would be another matter entirely. And obviously this sort of thing puts prices up. We're all paying through the nose for this kind of stupidity in the name of customer service!

Red are the sweetest and richest flavour, yellow are sweet but a bit bland, green are more of a vegetably taste. Do a taste test of all 3 with nothing else, I don't think you'd say that afterwards.

As for the bloke, I would happily buy his discarded red ones!

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 25/11/2023 20:26

Green ones aren't ripe so aren't as sweet as the other colours.

@Thewolvesarerunningagain YABU if you do not immediately post the recipe for these!!!

sprigatito · 25/11/2023 20:34

I prefer the green ones, especially in curries.

It's clearly odd behaviour and not allowed, but I have some sympathy with it. I dislike having to pay for things because they're included with the thing I want. I wouldn't actually open a packet though, I'd just do a catsbum face and go without.

missingyears · 25/11/2023 20:34

Maybe he is in the elimination phase of the Low FODMAP diet? It is an infuriating diet and I remember when I did it I was only allowed green peppers and not red, yellow or orange ones. If that's the case then he is probably peed off with the diet and taking his frustration out on the shop assistant.

Only those cursed with IBS would understand.

Teatrayderby · 25/11/2023 20:36

If he'd said it was a protest against packaging you'd probably be praising him. It's weird but he didn't steal anything so I think he's actually pretty smart!

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 25/11/2023 20:40

green peppers are the worst, so I’d be happy to go in after him and assemble the selection I wanted. (Clearly not acceptable behaviour).

Beckafett · 25/11/2023 20:43

Making me think of 'father of the bride' where he rips open the hot dog buns to match the number of hot dogs 😂

GoodOldEmmaNess · 25/11/2023 20:48

He's a plank. Hope the checkout woman didn't let him get away with it. I'm not a fan of Tesco and it is certainly annoying when you can't just buy the loose peppers you want. But it's up to Tesco what they sell. Direct action may sometimes be acceptable in order to avoid food poverty, but not to fine tune your recepe ingredients

saltinesandcoffeecups · 25/11/2023 20:50

Winnipeggy · 25/11/2023 20:28

Nope I live in a place with loose peppers 🤣🫑

Pipistrellus · 25/11/2023 20:51

He should have put them back in a packet and used the self serve. I'd be happy to have his red ones!

I'd have the yellow ones. Shame we aren't there, it would all be sorted.

topnoddy · 25/11/2023 20:52

As he has opened 3 packs that now cannot be sold he should have been charged for all 3 packs

Can’t they just be rewrapped? One pack of yellow and one red? Clearly there’s a market for single colors. Or dare I say chucked in a bin and sold loose?

Pipistrellus · 25/11/2023 20:55

topnoddy · 25/11/2023 20:52

If I came along and saw loose yellow and red peppers and two empty bags I'd happily put three in a bag and take them to the self serve.

MadeOfAllWork · 25/11/2023 20:57

It’s not so unusual that small stores only sell prepackaged vegetables.

It’s not acceptable to open them to get the ones he wants. If he wasn’t to select the colours then he should go to a store that sells them loose.

Would it be ok if someone opened the Haribo to get the ones they wanted?
